I have been told that mobs now drop rare items, such as iron ingots. Does anyone else realize that isolated gamemodes such as Skyblock and SuperFlat now have access to iron? And not limited either; completely renewable!
What you have heard is partially true, there is a mob that drops iron ingots. Thats the Iron Golem. But that can only be found in villages and takes 15 hits with a DIAMOND sword to kill.
Really you wouldnt see them if you were playing on a map like Skyblock, while you could make an iron farm in SuperFlat IF you had generate structures on.
The other half is that mobs do drop rare items, such as iron armour or tools for example, among other items.

How is it partially true? If mobs can occasionally drop iron items and ingots, then you could establish an inefficient yet renewable source of iron. And mobs can drop iron ingots as their rare item, not just tools.

Zombies: Iron ingots, iron shovels, iron swords, iron helmets.
Skeletons: Bows (normal or enchanted).
Zombie Pigmen: Gold ingots, gold swords (normal or enchanted), gold helmets.

Iron gollums drop iron ignots? That's AMAZING. So you can farm them.
Hey I wonder if you could set up a trap next to a skeleton dungeon and farm errows. That would be revolutionary.

Is anyone saying same-sex couples can't love each other? I love my children. I love my friends, my brother. Heck, I even love my mother-in-law. Should we call these relationships marriage, too?" –Rick Santorum
Guys, here's what it is:
Zombies can drop iron, iron shovels, iron swords, or iron helmets.
Skeletons can drop bows and bows with enchantment "Power I" or Power one, which makes the bow more powerful.
Creepers don't get a new drop, because to be honest, it wouldn't make sense for them to drop TNT or something.
Endermen dropped diamonds in the pre-release, but they removed that because that's a bit overpowered, which I agree with on the whole.
Pigmen and spiders have been dropping gold and spider eyes, and to be honest those two things aren't that hard to get.
Iron Golems also drop iron ingots, but what the guy is saying about skyblock is true. You can now get iron tools from those mob spawners.

Actually, it kind of would.
Here are my ideal "rare mob drops".
Zombies: Chain mail armor.
Skeletons: Same as now.
Spiders: Fermented spider eyes.
Creepers. TNT.
Endermen: Obsidian.
Silverfish: Raw fish.
Wolves/Hounds: Bones.
Ocelots: Cocoa beans.
Cats: Milk.
Iron golems: Pumpkin seeds.
Zombie Pigmen: Same as now.
Ghasts/Blazes: Fire charges.
Magma Cubes: Slimeballs on tiny death.
Slimes: Magma cream on big death.
Actually, it kind of would.

While I can see where you are coming from, some of these make no sense:
Spiders: Their eyes are being fermented while still inside their head?
Silver fish: They are insects.
Cats: How does a cat have a bucket, it would make sense if it was a raw fish.
Slimes: They have no fire-like aspect to them as is.

I admit this is corny, and relies on both English wordplay and housepet associations, but...
I couldn't think of anything else for silverfish! Maybe if a new item is added, I'll change it around.

True... I'm still playing on 12w06a where the "rare" drops are pretty darn frequent... I actually started playing Skyblock a few days ago and my mob farm has running for 2 days now... Given you have to kill the mob to get the rare drop, it becomes more difficult.. That trap drops so many mobs so fast that I don't think i could survive for long if I changed it so they didn't die from the drop. By the time you get to the point of building the spawner, I don't think it's a big deal if you happen to get a bit of iron.
Am I the only one here who is disapointed in seeing Minecraft becoming more and more an RPG? random loots? you gotta be kinding.
Don't mean to be disrespectful, but how does this make a game an RPG? There are plenty of games where killing things gives a chance of a rare drop. Just to name a few:
Grand Theft Auto Series
Fallout Series
inFamous Series
Call of Duty Zombies
None of those are RPGs, except for maybe Fallout. So I just don't understand what you mean.

Random loot doesn't make it an RPG on its own but if you add all of these with it though...
-Leveling
-Potions
-Enchantment
-Critical hits
-NPC's(they dont do nothing yet though)

Hey! Hey you! Yeah you with the face! NARF!!
Your a little late here on the iron golem farm
He isn't talking about Iron Golems. He's talking about zombies rarely dropping iron.

Nice info that's what I was looking for lol
Redstone is addicting. :3

The OP isn't talking about iron golems. They're talking about zombies.
Secondly, "iron gollums" gave me a weird mental image.

Brain juice, clearly.

Yeah, but they evolve into Magma Cubes, so... It kind of makes sense.

Got long-grass when I killed a cat
