For some reason our SMP servers entire nether build has been reset by 1.2
The overworld is fine, but when entering the nether the TERRAIN is the same but all of our buildings are gone. We had a pretty significant nether build and would like it back, does anyone have any ideas?
If you do not have a backup; I feel fairly secure in saying that you're SOL and its gone.
I'm partially relieved to hear this; as I was worrying that we'd have to find a way to reset the nether to make use of the new height. (That is still in effect in the nether, yes?)
You have my condolences for any lost projects; but honestly it was an expected occurrence with the new way world files work.
I have many backups, all of which work fine if I revert the server to 1.1 and load them, but I load the same files in 1.2 and the nether takes a really long time to load, as if it's being built fresh, and then loads empty.
At the moment yes, slightly sometimes, as chunks above the bedrock ceiling are not necessarily empty (as mushrooms generate and spread there) and generally, if the nether was extended to generate in the complete 256 height level the performance impact would be great, especially on older machines.
I don't have an "old" machine, but it is a poor machine. And what happens if I pick the generally option?

I've experienced the nether reset as well on our SMP server. We were running a stargate mod with multiple dimensions and they were also affected so this may cause problems in all dimensions (Nether, End, Other Worlds).
After downgrading both client and server back to 1.1 my Nether area magically appeared. Same map file server side. So what this is telling me, hopefully, is that its a problem in 1.2's coding and that the map file still has the structure.
Roll back now and wait for Mojang to wake up and preform some damage control.
My thoughts. Nether worlds aren't coded to update to anvil from older maps or are bugged so that they don't convert. That means your old Nether is still there, it just isn't compatible with your anvil map. Remember that Minecraft keeps your old formatted worlds.
I had the same problem with my Nether resetting on the update, but I re-started the server with the latest Bukkit build and my Nether was back. Most of the plugins didn't work, but I'm ok with that for now.
Sorry I'm too late, but you figured it out anyway! I just hope this stays intact for whenever Bukkit merges (I'm assuming since they are part of Mojang now) with the official Minecraft builds.
Same thing here. We're running a dev built of Bukkit 1.2.3, but I just restored a backup of the world_nether from 1.1 last week and tried vanilla 1.2.3 and the nether also reset. I think I'm going to have to just disable all Nether portals until this is fixed.
Thanks! Scratch's advice worked. I made a backup of my server files, then reverted the world, world_nether, and world_end to the last 1.1 backup we had. I then started up the latest build of Bukkit and let the anvil conversion take place. Then, I pasted my backup of 'world' back in and everything works perfectly now.

Does the performance really take a big hit in the Nether due to rendering above 128? Because that would be very, very unfortunate.
