i finally am going with the controller and forge. but i want to play one of the versions with new blocks, etc. i am playing forge with the controller working but version 1.16.4 and 1.16.5 are all i see. fthanks. chas
i now can see the snapshot. but i don't understand the new profile. i could start the snapshot but i didn't have the controller active. my left hand is numb from a military injury so i am very slow trying to use the keys. do i have to go to forge to get a new .jar file? or do i use my current .jar file? thank you for your support. chas
interesting. when i started forge again, my 21wob8 was a game with my regular controller game so i played the 21w game and now i am using the controller on it. i don't know what will happen with it. but i will experiment playing it. i am going to try to get some copper to build my house. i build just small houses with crafting table and a chest, bed and furnace. then i do a little farming and make a map, usually have to dig for redstone to make a compass before i can make a map and stuff. takes me a while to get started but its interesting. thanks, chas
snapshots can cause issues - with creating a new profile in your Minecraft Launcher it just separates your files from the current files (config/worlds etc)
You also can create a Backup of your .minecraft-folder
The snapshots contain Minecraft version 1.17 - at this time there are no mods/forge versions available
this is so sad. i started a game. had the bonus chest. figured out how to open the chest and got the axe. chopped down the tree. and can't figure out how to get the crafting table before i get killed. i looked at the keyboard optentions but have no idea what they describe for doing something with my possestions. back to the controller. it was hard enough to figure it out. i am so used eto playing bedrock i play instinctively on the controller. thanks. chas

Press e to open your inventory, and you will see a 2x2 grid in the top left corner. First, put some wood into one of those slots to create planks. Then, take the planks out and put one in each slot to create a crafting table.

Remember those versions that minecraft pranked us with? Specifically:
Minecraft 2.0
Minecraft 1.VR-Pre1
Snapshot 15w14a
Minecraft 3D
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.
still experimenting. with the lancher i can start a new game wiht 21w0b8. i chose to start with the chest. as soon as the game started i saved it and closed down. then i started up again with choosing forge and when i could chose a game the top one was labled 21w0b8. i played that game but the program i think converted it to 1.16.4. i could not find the chest anywhere but the controller was working fine. i am going to the forge forum and see what i can find out about playing the new snapshots. thanks . chas
I don't know anything about Forge and whether it works with the snapshots but you should really separate different versions into separate directories so you don't mix the worlds up and run them in the wrong version, once a world has been run in one version it probably can't be run in an earlier version.
(You can always copy a world to a different versions directory if you want to test it (Or want to update it but aren't completely certain that you will never want to go back.))

In your Launcher go to Installations and checkmark "snapshots"
Create a new Profile and choose one of the latest snapshots (21w08b)
Also use an own directory - Go to your .minecraft-folder
Inside, create a new folder called "snapshots"
At your profile settings you can choose a game directory - navigate to the snapshot-folder and use this folder

Just testing.
You have to enable snapshots in launcher menu and pick the latest if that's the one you want to play
Also, Forge is not available for the snapshot versions
If you choose a forge profile then it is 1.16.5 or older (you will see the version if you click on Edit on this profile)
You can't sadly use forge in the new snapshots until 1.17 is out and forge makes a version for it...
