Hey Minecraft the 1.17 update looks good so far but you did something stupid, you changed ores there was no point in changing the texture from a classic and borderline perfect Minecraft ores to a different and honestly terrible new texture that no won needed ores look bad and entire bilding styles will have to change. But if you could make the new ore texture optional and have the old texture pack available free in the update it wouldn't be as bad because people like the oldest texture and the current texture in 1.16 so if you can let us have our textures free of charge instead of forcing us to use the new (bad) ones it would be much appreciated thank you
All you have to do is select the "Programmer Art" resource pack that is available in-game, which will revert all textures that have been changed since 1.14 to the originals (blocks added since then are not affected unless they borrow textures from another block, like stairs):
The original textures (with the exception of leather horse armor) are available as a resource pack/texture pack built in-game [Java Edition only] or as a separate download [Bedrock Edition only] (named "Programmer Art" in Java Edition, and "Classic Textures" in Bedrock Edition).
Otherwise, it is very easy to make your own resource pack that only changes the ore textures; make a copy of 1.16.5.jar or whatever version you want and change the extension to .zip, then open it and navigate to "assets\minecraft\textures\blocks" and the ore textures will be found there with names like "iron_ore"; you only need to include the textures that you want to change (the directory structure of a resource pack is exactly the same as inside the jar, so the structure of your pack will be "root\assets\minecraft\textures\blocks", where "root" can be a name of your choice (e.g. "OldOres") and contains "assets", "pack.mcmeta", and optionally "pack.png", which could just be an old ore texture scaled to 128x128):
i will use the new blocks. time will be involved in changing but i do use the classic blocks in bedrock. gave up gaming for lent so will find out what i have after easter. chas

The new ores don't look bad. They look very similar to the newer ores like copper and nether gold. They're even comparable to emerald and nether quartz. Also, this update was necessary and it does benefit the community. As explained, the update was to allow each ore to have a different shape in order to allow identification by something other than color, which helps with accessibility for colorblind people.
It's also generally better for each ore to have a unique texture instead of them all being basically the same with a different color filled into the "ore" part. This makes them all look very similar unless you specifically process the color. In the past there was a problem with mistaking lapis for diamonds - Now that mistake is virtually impossible.
And the texture pack is optional, as explained by TheMasterCaver.

Remember those versions that minecraft pranked us with? Specifically:
Minecraft 2.0
Minecraft 1.VR-Pre1
Snapshot 15w14a
Minecraft 3D
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.
It's actually always bothered me that pretty much all the ores in the game, minus a few (which made it even more silly), had the same texture but re-colored. It seemed kinda lazy and made it harder to distinguish some of the blocks in darker lighting. Making them all unique is something to get used to but is a welcome change overall.
I didn't care for the changes to the ore textures, in fact I never even wanted them. If I cared this much about the ore textures I'd use a texture pack.
We shouldn't use nostalgia to justify a claim, however this change doesn't really have a purpose. With the classic texture pack you can easily tell by the colors of the ores that they were different, and only if you had insufficient lighting would you ever mistake one for the other which let's be truthful here, is not the fault of the game, no excuse really unless if you had poor or less than 20/20 vision, and the classic texture pack is iconic to the game. Fiddling with the base content of the game isn't going to end well, there's already a division over just about every other change they've made so far, that's evident by the fact some still choose to play the alpha.
It's not something that's gonna affect my enjoyment of the game but I do agree with your point, there are some things that either don't need changing or shouldn't be changed because the old saying is if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Except, this change do have a purpose: It makes it easier for people with color blindness to distinguish the different ores from eachother. Which was impossible for them (people with color blindness) to spot the difference with classic textures.

They could add a colorblind mode for people with impaired vision. There's a setting for that on Windows or at least there was before all the UI changes that resulted from Windows 10 taking away the classic themes, why would this be so difficult to implement in a game like Minecraft?
The classic ores gave Minecraft its identity, it's like Pikachu to Pokemon.
In bedrock edition we will always have the option to use a free classic texture pack.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
i will use the new blocks. time will be involved in changing but i do use the classic blocks in bedrock. gave up gaming for lent so will find out what i have after easter. chas

You're not the only one. Good thing texture packs exist
