finally playing 21w08b. started house and want to make a map to travel. dug a ladder down to level 11 and started looking for redstone. two days and i cannot find any. dug 4 directions from 104x 0z and nothing. each direction dug an offshoot 4 or 5 m in and then moved down 3 and dug again. nothing. found some iron but not enough to keep iron pick all the time. no diamond. no gold. found 7 copper accidently at level 19. frustrating. chas

Why exactly were you digging at level 11? Diamonds and redstone are no longer found there, you know, at least not in any appreciable amounts.
You're aware that the world now goes down to -64, right?
Here's a link to a diagram of the latest ore distribution.
I noted someone has reported there is a lava lake generation in caves in 21w09.
I always find lava lakes in caves before, unless they pop up from nowhere where they're no lava lakes before.
Perhaps lava lakes are more common in the 1.17 update which would be nice. It would pose a risk to players in survival but it would also mean more ways to get obsidian without going to the nether.

You have to get obsidian to get to the Nether in the first place, and lava is extremely abundant in the Overworld, similar in abundance to coal, as seen in this analysis of my first world, which comes out to an average of more than 100 lava+obsidian per chunk, mostly below layer 11:
(granted, this is before 1.7 made caves less common but the difference actually isn't that great, especially considering that caves were made less dense, offsetting about half the expected reduction in volume, and ravines were not changed)
A rather disappointing snapshot after a week away. I hope the new biomes start generating soon.
We have the biome in the buffet mode. Odds are the deep dark will get this treatment as well. It's likely so that they can test how the biome generates without needing to find them with the find biome command. After that we'll get cave biomes to generate in normal worlds. However I'm willing to bet that the deep dark will be the last thing added in the game. The road map might go like this:
Current snapshot: Cave biomes generate in normal worlds -> Mountain changes begin to be added to Java Edition Snapshots -> Archeology added (honestly this is the wild card and could be added at any point) -> Deep dark added -> Warden added -> Bug fix phase -> pre-release -> 1.17 goes live.
still learning. i though the world ended at 0. now i know why i can't find diamonds. did 21w08b go away today?
It didn't go away, it's been superceded by 21w10a but you can still play 21w08b if you want.
Click on "Installations" at the top of the launcher, chose your installation and click on it and you'll get the option to chose any version, even very old ones, way back to Alpha versions before the game was officially released.
It's not related to 1.17 update, but I want Minecraft's official Korean font to be changed to this font, which says the second font on this site, [달무리]. https://eatch.dev/mcfont/
I'm glad the lush caves are here. They're something I've wanted for a long, long time. It gives me vibes of Terraria's underground jungle (Terraria did caves much better than MC; it's about time MC is catching up), and the old Super Hostile maps. Surely I'm not the only one.
The new mountains look pretty cool, and they even kept some aspects of the old gen from what it seems so that's a +1 in my book.
One thing that is really driving me bonkers however is reducing ore exposure to air. That was one of the big reasons to go caving; you could acquire materials and even stuff like diamonds without spending an absurd amount of time grinding away. Now it's no secret that game progression was going to be at least modified with this update, but I hope we see some sort of compensation, be it a mechanic or tool to make excavation less of a hassle, or something like that. Outside of ore, I hope we see some additional structures or updates to structures like dungeons; that'd still give a healthy reason to go spelunking.
The big caves also mean way more ore, mobs, and other good stuff! The copper seems cool too! How strong do you think the copper blocks are? It's doubtful but I really hope there might be strongholds in the caves.

I think this change is absolutely terrible and completely against what a "cave update" should be - even in the Swiss cheese caves in 1.6.4 I only average about 4 diamond ore per hour of extreme caving, 15 or so in a play session yielding a total of over 3,000 ores, while branch-mining can yield 10 times as many diamonds per hour (granted, I don't go caving just to collect diamonds as my overall ore collection shows). I actually collect even less in my modded worlds, despite the much larger caves and higher cave density in general (overall air volume is about double that of 1.7):
If anything, they should make it so that ores only generate if they are exposed, then branch-mining would be completely useless (though I wouldn't do this myself, and I actually branch-mine to get my first resources in part because it is so much more efficient at anything other than coal and iron. Ironically, I made amethyst ore 8 times rarer than diamond above lava level, pretty much forcing players to branch-mine to find enough in a reasonable amount of time).
Then again, this is why I play on my own highly personalized modded versions and am not impressed at all by anything I've seen added to 1.17 so far; I've seen caves in my own mods that are WAY bigger than what I've seen in 1.17, which don't even warrant a deeper underground (if only some images and the like as I haven't watched any videos or played the game, but e.g. this image shows that the "giant" caves are maybe 20 blocks deep, not even a third of the current ground depth - I was expecting caves at least50-60blocksdeep - even the first version of TMCW, 7 years old, has such giant caves). I'm also guessing that "normal" cave generation is still the same as it has been since 1.7.
Just thought about asking this: Is anyone else able to enchant anything in the 21w10a?
For some reason, it doesn't give me any enchantment choices (the 3 slots are empty for me, and nothing helps). Or is it just me?

Even tried on fresh world, and still same. Huh.
Enchanting is broken in 21w10a; enchanted books also do not appear to work (the enchantment is only applied client-side) and even the /enchant command is reported to not work:
So far I like the mountains a lot from what I've played in bedrock, even if the old extreme hills biome look comically dwarfed by them.
Having "3d" biomes possible in the game is such a huge leap, with sub biomes within biomes according to height.

Oh geez, this is halfway to Minetest complexity. + means that existing worlds will be broken if updated

i will delete my old stuff and create a new world. i missed the '10'. thanks for the update. and now i have to go back and dig down deeper. chas
The lush caves look cool but the roof is too flat. Additionally the bottom is quite dark and I think a floor glow plant would help with this
