...With that said, I've been looking at the lack of cave biomes in game and the discussion from this and the previous page, and I have a suspicion. ...We may be getting cubic chunks. Or at least a vertical biome system.
I don't know how it works but there's a video on YouTube showing how custom worlds can have a height of 4064 blocks, -2032 to 2031 or something.
By AntVenom.
(I kinda have to wonder if he got the numbers right, I would have thought it would have been more likely to be 4096, -2048 to 2047. Maybe there's some housekeeping reasons for not allowing the full 2 to the power of 12 range?)
AntVenom does say that the height has to be evenly divisible by 16, which does sound like it could be cubic chunks,
AntVenom does say that the height has to be evenly divisible by 16, which does sound like it could be cubic chunks
Since 1.2 the game has used a "quasi-cubic chunks" system; chunks are split into 16x16x16 sections, with only sections that contain data actually created, as seen with NBTExplorer for a world created in 1.6.4 and part of the game's code, which handles chunks in memory using the same format:
// Stores up to 16 chunk sections for a max height of 256 blocks
this.storageArrays = new ChunkSection[16];
// This is how a block ID is read from a chunk, it calculates the section index by dividing Y by 16 (>> 4)
public int getBlockID(int posX, int posY, int posZ)
{
ChunkSection cs = this.storageArrays[posY >> 4];
return cs != null ? cs.getBlockID(posX, posY & 15, posZ) : 0;
}
// This is within the chunk section itself; data is stored in the exact same manner as on disk:
public ChunkSection(int y, boolean hasSkyLight)
{
this.yBase = y;
this.blockArray = new byte[4096];
this.blockMetadataArray = new byte[2048];
this.blocklightArray = new byte[2048];
this.skylightArray = (hasSkyLight ? new byte[2048] : null);
}
public int getBlockID(int posX, int posY, int posZ)
{
return this.blockArray[posY << 8 | posZ << 4 | posX] & 255;
}
Almost Cubic chunks (Traditional chunk is now split into a column of 16x16x16 blocks, each block is numbered 0 to 15, bottom to top in the chunk column. Chunks themselves are still 16x16x128)
Also, I know why the limit is -2048 to +2047 - the game stores the section index as a byte, which ranges from -128 to +127 (or 0-255 if read as an unsigned value for 0-4095), and apparently Mojang doesn't want to change that yet. I've also heard that performance seriously degrades with deeper worlds so chunks are still clearly not truly cubic, meaning that every 16x16x16 section is handled as a separate entity (that said, deeper worlds will be more demanding regardless if you load more blocks along the y-axis; a render distance of 32 chunks would load more than a billion blocks if the full volume was filled, half a billion if chunks were loaded in a sphere, as opposed to only 86.5 million (68 million with circular rendering) for a typical world height of 5 sections).
I've been out for a month, and what I have to say is... WOW.
My jaw dropped when I cruised through the new caves, blocks, and generation. Absolutely amazing.
You and me both!!
The ore retextures I wasn't fond of at first, but then I saw that they were doing it for colorblind people, and I applaud that! The ores contrast against the grimstone looks completely awesome. I've had my issues with Jappa but he has been hitting the ball out of the park.
I actually really like the new gold ore and redstone ore textures. Iron I can take or leave. The only one I really don't like is the new emerald ore - it was already in a different pattern, and I like the old version better.
The ore gen overhauls I'm excited for. Different layers will take time for me to get used to, for sure. Especially since I hate having to dig out shafts; I much prefer spelunking (more so with this update). ...But it brings a totally new dynamic, and provided we mine in the right place we can get even more of an ore than we possibly could previously! And just... LOOK! Mountain mining is going to be a legitimate option!!! Plus, we now have a solid risk/reward for going into the deep dark!
As I've said before, I really enjoy branch mining, so I'm salivating over this! And since I already like setting up my base in mountain biomes, mountain mining should be great fun!
...With that said, I've been looking at the lack of cave biomes in game and the discussion from this and the previous page, and I have a suspicion. ...We may be getting cubic chunks. Or at least a vertical biome system. Either way, I can hardly wait to see the new biomes in game, particularly the lush caves and wherever the sculk will grow. [Crystal caverns?]
We already have vertical biomes in the Nether - I am now convinced that those were a testbed for vertical cave biomes in the Overworld. (Conceivably the same code could be used for floating island biomes too.) However, I don't anticipate cubic chunks.
The sculk blocks will spawn in the Deep Dark.
We're only just starting to enter spring, and this is slated to come out in the summer. Going by that and of what we know, there is still SO much more to be had. I am so [expletive redacted] excited for this update to come out. This will forever change the game.
No kidding! There's so much time left! Who knows what they've got up their sleeves?
Here's to hoping that we get new atmospheric effects and music like in the nether and oceans!
I think we can absolutely count on this happening. I wouldn't be surprised if each of the new cave biomes have their own atmospheric effects and music, and normal caves might get new ones too. (Heck, they might even depend on what style of cave you're in! ie, Swiss cheese, spaghetti, or "regular".)

Lena Raine could do soundtracks that play exclusively in the caves and cliffs updates content of higher mountain peaks for sure, should call the new mountains alpine biomes. It would be cool if they also had abandoned log cabins that had loot, some containing a new music disc by the new composer for Minecraft. There are currently 13 discs, the majority were done by C418. If we're lucky Lena may make music for both the newer extreme hills and the subterranean biomes, both for general music and jukebox items.
I'd like eagles to be added to the game too, not just the confirmed goat. Eagles could be an interesting neutral mob, that won't attack players unless attacked or if players wandered too close to their nests, eagles could also be programmed to attack rabbits too, making the mountains unsuitable for having rabbits out in the open. In addition to this eagles could be made to spawn only on stone dirt and grass blocks, but only if there is at least 16 blocks air space above them, meaning they will not usually spawn in player structures such as houses or stables on farmland.
I'd say it depends, if it is balanced by moving the diamond layer further down, making them harder to get to until your strip/branch mines are properly set up then I can agree with it just fine. It would encourage players to use more efficient mining strategies instead of getting unholy amounts of diamonds on their first day. They would have to bring a lot of materials with them into the mines for making tools, furnaces, chests, torches etc.
I'm not against people being able to get a lot of diamonds, but their balance is important because diamonds do provide people top tier loot later in the game once they combine it with netherrite. In fact I'd argue you should be required to use Fortune III if you want to be collecting stacks of diamond blocks (which is worth 9 stacks of diamonds) within about a fortnight of gameplay. Without fortune, no, diamonds should never be this easy to get in hedonistic amounts. Being able to get 1 stack of diamonds within a few hours was already generous enough imho.
About what I feel about the 1.17 update in general, content wise, the good far outweighs the bad in my honest opinion, in fact I'd dare say this is probably the best update we've gotten in a very long time, the previous favourite update of mine was aquatic.
I love the new textures of ores to go well for colorblind people. I think it is great they think about stuff like that. But the new coal ore feels little bit trypophobic. Like it really triggers the negative “holey” feels especially when it generates on the surface with multiple blocks beside each other. Would love to see the option to switch back. I will probly change this one to the original one via texture pack. I really support the reasons for this change, but the texture itself feels scary. Am i the only one?
i think it will be way easier to find diamonds in the cave update
Think again. I have played a bit in creative with the fill command in 21w08b worlds
While around X/Z 0,0:
/fill 0 -60 0 15 10 15 minecraft:air replace minecraft:deepslate (might also want to do same for minecraft:tuff and minecraft:lava)
This pretty much clears out everything below 0 in a chunk except ores.
Might also want to do: /effect give <your player Id> minecraft:night_vision 9999
Also experimented with clearing out long horizontal sections
Only been seeing like 1 or 2 veins of diamond per chunk, but now that vein can be anywhere between 15 and -60. Branch mining at Y=52 (the new lava lake level) has been EXTREMELY unrewarding. In my survival world, which is a 21w07a gen at least around spawn, I stumbled upon a mineshaft in lower negative 50s. While exploring that, I actually found several exposed redstone veins, two diamond and one gold.
I fully mapped an area 1000 blocks each way from my base (got a display of four 1:8 maps on a wall) If you want coal, you want mountains. Around Y=90, coal is absolutely all over the place. Iron seems fairly abundant at Y=30, but if you got heavy iron needs, you likely will want an iron farm.
Had major issues finding lapis. Literally, after all the cave exploration and branch mining, I had found a single block of lapis ore. Thankfully, village cleric, sells it 1:1.
New deep caves are indeed jaw-dropping, but exploring them on survival can get nasty.
Not sure if this is because of new terrain gen, or just my luck, but in a full 1000-block radius, which included a couple oceans, I found zero shipwrecks. I did buy an ocean explorer map, the monument was about 1800 blocks away, and not far from it I did find one shipwreck. I also did not find a single pillager tower.
I truly like the possibility of the caverns and bluffs update, yet there are a couple of issues that I think numerous about this things could be fixed.
Groups
I really imagine that packs are a decent answer for putting away additional things that you find while mining or investigating. The one issue is the way that the UI shows the things that are inside the group. It appears to be that the things are only completely grouped around when you drift over the pack. I think this is an issue in light of the fact that, in the model video, there was a pack with blossoms in it. There were such countless various sorts of blossoms and they were totally spread around the spot, so it was difficult to determine what kinds of blossoms there were. Possibly as opposed to bunching the things to make them difficult to see, the things are in succession and like a chest, it shows the thing and furthermore the number of there are. This makes it more coordinated and simpler to see so you realize what is in your group.
Telescope
The telescope is quite cool, and I imagine that it is a fascinating method to put the new minerals to utilize. The one issue is the way itemized the circle looks when you glance through it. I realize that the telescope can be liable to change and that this may very well be a brief style, yet I figured I should call attention to it in any case. Minecraft is known for being blocky and 16x16, yet the circle around the telescope looks altogether too definite. I simply figure the circle ought to have less detail, which will make it look more like something in Minecraft than something from a surface pack.
The mountain changes look really cool. It looks like the Bedrock team is focusing on the mountains while the Java team is focusing on the caves. Maybe they'll do a merge at some point which will be huge for both versions. Either that or both versions are going to need to play catch up with each other. That aside it is very wise for them to take this direction. It allows both sides of the update to be visualized and tested at the same time while focusing resources on each feature. Makes me wonder if bedrock will see archeology before java does.

AntVenom does say that the height has to be evenly divisible by 16, which does sound like it could be cubic chunks,
Just testing.
Ok.
I played 21w08b.
I found iron this time.
The copper is still the most common than coal and iron for some reasons despite coal and iron are more useful than copper.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
(Delete very interesting explanation.)
But, according to AntVenom the limit isn't -2048 to +2047 but -2032 to +2031.
So 2 almost cubic chunks "missing". (Unless he got it wrong of course.)
Just testing.
Have you seen the chart claiming to show ore distribution for 21w08a?
https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/minecraft_gamepedia/images/5/54/21w08a_approximate_ore_distribution.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20210224180638
According to it iron should be most common at level 32 and coal above sea level with a maximum at 96
Just testing.
It seems that the primary use for copper is going to be for building projects, so it stands to reason that it should be easy to get.

NOOB1234 SUCKS
So I need to mine deeper to find coal and iron.
Thanks.

Bedrock got some of the new mountain biome changes, hasn't come to java yet since they didn't feel like there was enough content yet to make one:
