To me the IDEA of the stryder is a big deal
.. without Elytra wings/Enderpearls it's very hard to get around large lava lakes. A lot of digging / building bridges is required, so some form of 'Lava Boat' would be an ideal thing to add.
What with the Nether update & the new materials added, being able to create some form of 'fire resistant lava boat' seems a logical thing to add.
Mojang decided not to make 'yet another craftable item' & decided on a Mob instead
The Mob MODEL is also a big deal to me...The idea of a mob (even with those 'long' legs) is somehow able to Stride over large lava lakes - even if it's more than 2 blocks deep - just seems WRONG.
My idea of some mob that acted like a 'pond Skater' seems more 'realistic'/'Logical' to me (& b4 anyone states it - I know minecraft isn't REALISTIC
At least they should've chosen a type of mob that was able to 'float' on the lava surface
- I personally don't think I'd mind IF the Stryder's body was actually level or slightly lower than the lava level instead of being able to still see the legs (See example attached)
The GRAPHIC of the stryder.. meh, not so big a deal. Guess it's ok for the Mob model, although it still looks like a grumpy old man to me with a 'whispie hair comb-over' -should be 'easily' changed using a resource pack.
The only problem I have with them is that they are too slow. You would only need to use them in the early game, after that it becomes useless. It would be great if they let you feed a strider fungus to give them a temporary speed boost. that would make it still be useful during the later part of the game. They should also add strider armor since ghasts can easily hit you when you're riding a strider.
I thought Striders do have a form of speed boost - similar to pigs iirc
EDIT: just checked Wiki:
The player can ride on an adult strider using a saddle and can attach them to leads.
Similar to how pigs are controlled using a carrot on a stick, striders are controlled using a warped fungus on a stick. The warped fungus on a stick can be used, causing the strider to boost and walk at a greater speed which takes durability from the warped fungus on a stick.
I don't really have any opinion on it, it kinda just feels like another mob. The only thing I don't like about it is its walking animation. It looks super weird compared to other animations in minecraft.
To download the other ones you need to make a folder in the versions folder for minecraft and put the client and JSON file for the versions in there. They all need to be named the same aside from file extensions. Once you do that, you will be able to choose that version when making a new profile with the minecraft launcher.
That's Weird !?!?
I DID mention the quote from the Wiki (post #46)...
Lemme just check I posted the right thing.....
... Yep - I had posted

I've been playing Minecraft for years, I have no idea how I didn't know this. lol
Carrots on a stick are not the most useful way of transport, even in 1.5 raillines and nether portalling were significantly less of a hassle once you did the initial work to set them up. Also, there is a cooldown timer on how much a pig can be fed, slowing down how fast you can consume the carrot and fixing the speed you can reach.
I feel the reason most people want a lava boat now when before they wouldn't have is because the new terrain and mobs makes the Nether too dangerous compared to what it used to be.
On the other hand, the even split around the strider mob may be due to people just accepting whatever Mojang is or because it's inoffensive when it's in lava or you're riding it compared to seeing it on land.

Striders aren't that great of an addition in my mind. While they do look like a sun burnt Gollum, I don't think they should be removed as it still adds more life to the Nether and itself Minecraft. They're just kinda plain, and I doubt people will use them that much. However, them getting cold when they leave lava is a nice touch.

Although I'm not for the strider, I was never for nether boats either personally. I still don't feel like that to accommodate to all skill levels means you have to pander to making something easy for everyone.

Who makes more money, the new players who are bad or the old players who are good?
I don't believe there should be a way to cross the lava oceans easily be it strider or boat.
I've never been in favor of any vessel be it obsidian/netherite or wood from the stems of the assorted wood fungi. It shouldn't be easy, that's the whole point, yet there is a percentage of players who want everything handed to them easily on a plate instead of face a challenge. So no I don't believe there should have been any kind of boat let alone a strider, which I feel is a step in the wrong direction. Get the piglins to trade with you sure, but then make it even easier by having gold ore in the nether too.
I have to question the direction some things are taking, the new biomes in the nether for me are most welcome despite being one who has thought the nether didn't need "Doing up" but striders are IMO, a step too far.
I don't think the gold ore in the nether was a bad idea.
You can't say its hard to tower up 2 blocks and kill zombified piglins.
Every noowbie disovers that sooner or later.
Plus piglins will attack you if you brake any gold related block or a simple chest near by them.
That goes even for your own chest, what i find realy mean. Emagine you don't know that.
I think the gold ore is an option to not build a mobfarm that provides you with tons of gold.
Therefore it could become a rare mobdrop.
But i agree with you that the nether should not become too easy.
I mean it's hell. It has to have some terrefying things.
Edit:
I also want to point out that i didn't even know about the nether untill a friend told me about building a portal.
I was like "What the fork?! Minecraft has a hell???"
Agree, if even a person who just found out about the Nether says the old way was too easy, it's too easy. Minecraft is full of 'softcore cheats' thanks to being able to build and break blocks almost anytime, anywhere. Mobs have to be the control on this.

My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q
I haven't entered the Nether since 1.12 since I tend to spend most of my time in the overworld exploring in recent versions, and I know that even the 1.13/1.14 changes to add ravines and more lava flows made it more difficult to navigate. I can only imagine how it is now.
Nothing. I’m just saying I don’t really like the way striders look.
True, but is that a big deal or a small deal?
It's a matter of perspective I guess

Right-clicking with the item will increase the speed and use up one durability.
Remember those versions that minecraft pranked us with? Specifically:
Those are still downloadable! Watch this video for 2.0:
