Hot take: Mojang should have waited to release the re spawn anchor. I realize that snapshots are made for early builds of changes, but i feel as it the re spawn anchor is at the point of being just too unfinished. Even for a snapshot. It doesn't even deplete your glow stone when you recharge it. That's not even counting the huge number of bugs That I, not even being bug searcher, have found by just playing with the block in the new snapshot
Wow. They actually did it. I haven't been able to look at the more recent snapshots until now. So crying obsidian is in and it looks great. It actually "cries" with particles too! For those that use programmer art they actually included the OG texture for it. Sweet! The new respawn anchor looks pretty wild but I'm not going to touch it much until its more finalized. Gold ore is at long last in the nether. Golden apple users, minecart enthusiasts, and players looking to barter rejoice!
Now on to what I REALLY did not expect and I am ecastatic with: Striders. A new mob that isn't a skeleton or zombie clone and isn't a compelte humanoid? AND you can ride on them across lava? Consider me happy! They look and sound adorable too! Little boxy whales with legs. They shiver when outside of lava too, so that's snazzy.
Oh. The ambience. It's an odd choice but one I am completely cool with. Feels like I'm playing Subnautica in all the right ways. The new soul speed enchantment has a nice niche. The newer basalt blocks better justify its existence but I still don't fancy the new style. Same goes for the block sounds. It feels odd hearing a mix of something new and old instead of just completely one or the other.
Overall I'm happier with the update now. Looks like the terrain gen was changed. Looks good in the new biomes but it looks like it's going to be real annoying sometimes. Gonna miss some of the old gen, not gonna lie.
Lodestones and striders are very worthy additions! Lodestones in particular are something I've wanted in the game forever. And of course people have wanted some way to travel on lava for years.
I feel somewhat vindicated. While these additions aren't as meaty as a new biome or the like, they definitely were not so much as hinted at before now. I knew the update couldn't be virtually finished so early!
Lodestones will be useful but I can't help but feel like Mojang have lost the plot now with striders. I hope all those crying for nether boats (Especially on Reddit) are happy now.

Yeah, it's definitely more than I expected. I gotta be honest though, that Strider is ugly as sin. I am interested in what kind of cosmetic uses the Lodestone has as I dont use the compass a whole lot.
I think the striders are cute. In a somewhat horrifying way. Rather suitable to the Nether! Their sounds are very well done, too.
Being able to use compasses reliably in the Nether and End will be a great blessing. Or even to find your way back to a base far from spawn in the Overworld.
Lodestones are expensive enough that they won't be spammed everywhere, and they make a great reason to keep mining Netherite after you've upgraded your gear. (Or even before.)

Personally I like the idea of 'lava boats' but not the actual 'strider' mob - so much so I posted a suggestion to what I'D like the strider to be replaced with.
As for the rest of the nether update. I've not played snapshots but from what I've read I do like the idea of the new biomes & blocks - not 100% sure I like a 'better than diamond' but I admit in the past I did like the idea of 'smelting' one ore with another to make a new material - so the 'Netherite' sort of filled the gap (FYI I always wanted a way to smelt gold into other tools/weapons to give higher durability/less wear/slightly faster mining)

Well, this is certainly a mixed update so far.
I love the new biomes - although 3 (and really, more like 2) certainly aren't enough - and they are certainly my favorite thing about the update, along with finally gold in the nether. Super hyped about that.
Things I don't really like:
Piglins vs Zombie Piglins. Currently, the behaviors don't make much sense - why are the zombie versions neutral while the normal ones aren't? Wouldn't it make way more sense for it to be the reverse? The newly added Zombie Hoglin, or Zoglin, also is inconsistent. They attack zombie piglins - why?
I think I'd much prefer it if Zombie Piglins were hostile, but spawned less often, while Piglins would either retain their current behavior or be neutral. In addition, Zombie Piglins/Zoglins should attack their non-zombie counterparts - maybe even launch sieges against Bastions in a similar fashion to Raids (a bit outlandish, I know). Zoglins should have the same behavior as Zombie Pigmen, and shouldn't attack their fellow undead mobs. It'd also be nice if they spawned alongside Zombie Piglins ocassionally.
Another thing I don't like much is the Striders. They're always going to be limited in their usability since they can't be picked up like a boat, on top of needing both a saddle and a warped fungus on a stick. They also don't match the art style compared to other mobs, but that's more of an opinionated thing. I think they're fine overall but I really think an obsidian/netherite/mix of both boat should be added. Maybe boat travel could be slower than using a strider, to give them an incentive to be used?
I'm saddened to see no changes to nether fortresses, though perhaps that has yet to come. And of course, everything I've talked about could change, so who knows.
Still, excited to play this update when its out - I just hope mobs overall are consistent and make sense, and again, now that we have non-zombie versions of pigmen, I don't think it makes sense to keep their old behaviors. They've gotten a new model - might as well give them new behaviors.
I am really liking the new content that was not initially revealed. Soul speed, striders, and zoglins are all welcome additions. I do think zoglins should have a chance at spawning in the Nether wastes biome as that is also home to a large amount of zombie piglins. I think the only mob they should not attack are the zombie piglins (and creepers but that is already the case).
I feel like there should be a warped variant to nether warts since nether warts can make the nether wart block. Nether warts should be renamed to crimson warts. Perhaps they would be an alternative potion base or used for something new. It would be slightly interesting to see a second Nether crop.
Lodestones are interesting, and perhaps now it's time to make maps work in the Nether/End. Or maybe lodestones are intended to replace that - either way, I see them as being quite useful, and probably the first use of netherite for me (especially in the End, this would be incredibly useful navigating back to the island or a particular end city on elytra).
Striders have neat functionality, yes, but I am among those who are not a fan of their appearance. I wonder if they are a bit misplaced, though at the same time, not everything in hell must be hellish. Which brings us to...
The soul sand valleys are any average (or new) player's nightmare. It is exactly why people fear going into the Nether, and I don't blame them. Personally I see potential ghast farm opportunities there, but... how do you build one with the entire biome attacking you every five seconds? Maybe the spawn rates need to be toned down just a hair. This biome is by far the most difficult area of the game - danger like this ought to be reserved for an endgame scenario which requires diamond/netherite armor and good weaponry. It puts the boss mobs to shame.

I am actually super satisfied with 1.16 so far. Admittingly, the Nether is now much harder to explore and even easier to get lost in, but it is worth it. Hoglins are terrifying. Piglins give us nether trading. Netherite tier gives us a 'dark ultimate armour' trope. We have trees, food, and mushroom in the hell dimension now. I bet nether fortresses will get a touch-up too which would be really nice, they haven't had any attention since 1.6.
We have new biomes, including a dedicated one for ghast and skeleton hunting and a dedicated one for hoglin hunting and piglin trading, and one for just Endermen on their own, which with Nether Fortresses means that every Nether enemy except chicken jockeys have a space where you can find them in larger numbers.
Making gold armour useful as a way to dupe piglin and forcing you to not wear all and only netherite is cool. Ancient debris allow for more speculation into Minecraft as a post-apo world and the Nether as its underbelly. Gold ore in the Nether explains piglin and the new piglin and zombpiglin models are awesome as well as a cooler name for them.
The ore being soft enough you can mine it with just wood is awesome too because I generally prefer to only use wood in the Nether since carrying cobble is a mess and the netherrrack is so soft anyway. Plus, now we have Nether trees so we don't even have to hassle with Overworld saplings or chorus trees for food (Endermen are more common and hoglins exist).
Netherite in general is pretty awesome, especially the idea of coating armour with it as a different type of upgrade, and how it is made. Piglin trading is also fun.
Overall, I just love this update so far.
I haven't even taken a good look at the more crafty side of stuff like soul fire but I can imagine its usefulness. Having dedicated soul torches for the dimension sounds and looks epic. Oh yes, and I love how the soul valley has different lighting too.
And all the ambience that changes between biomes. Gotta take a look at the new blocks too.
If there's one thing I wish would happen, that I've wanted since 1.16 (EDIT: 1.6, horse update, lol,)
is that zombie and skeleton horses show up in nether fortresses with some type of zombie or skeleton type mobs riding them (like the thunderstorm jockeys). I'll bring that up in suggestions again since now is the time Mojang people are most likely looking for ideas for forts.
EDIT 2: Oh yes, and striders to give people a rideable aquatic mob and a Nether horse and a lava boat, as well as one that hostile piglin can use.
Looks like Mojang has heard us at last, they have given us almost all the changes we wanted across dimensions, for the Overworld what with villages and pillagers and animals and ocean life for liveliness (minus giant AI being undone again), more to see of the End (minus phantoms being removed), and now the Nether is almost perfect, we even got crying obsidian back and soul sand coming in. All we need now is Dual_Iron4447's idea: https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/suggestions/3013341-make-cobblestone-obtainable-in-the-nether and we're basically looking at a perfect infinitely liveable Nether to match the infinitely liveable oceans, forests, and End outer islands.
The only real downside to this update as far as I can tell is that the Nether is almost too complicated now, it's become its own thing which is good but if you treat it as a place to pass through to reach The End...well it's much more difficult to. More trees, more getting lost, more enemies, more complex.
Making the game more fun for hardcore Nether people shouldn't come at the cost of making it harder for people who just want in and out for Blaze rods and Nether wart.
EDIT: Apparently I can only post 5 threads a day on this site, so until tomorrow, my submitted but unapproved suggestion topic:
Nether Update Suggestion from 1.6 to 1.16: Bring undead horses to nether fortresses!
Mobs X Gameplay X
I remember suggesting this like two years ago, but now it is more relevant again than ever.
Add zombie and skeleton horses in the Nether. In the general area, in Nether Fortresses, whatever. Have some on their own some being them and you can do whatever you can with them, and others are ridden by various skeleton or zombie type mobs and are hostile unless you kill the rider and spare the rided one.
This is not just for more intense or interesting gameplay or aesthetics, it also makes so much more sense to explain why the nether can be explored by its own mobs so easily despite the struggle it is for human players, and why nether fortresses have tons of horse stuff and tall ceilings but currently no horses.
We questioned why gold was valued by piglin and by fortress mobs when it didn't spawn in the nether. Now it's a Nether ore too.
So if we question why horse-designed areas and equipment is in the nether, perhaps we will get horses - or what's left of them - in the nether too!
I'm a bit sad about the nether losing its otherwise hellish status, but I must say the new biomes and blocks are intriguing. My personal favorite so far has to be the soul sand valley. The blue fire, change in fog and landscape, and stuff like the basalt pillars help make it. The forests are cool ideas but need to be more sparse and alien. The warped forest though is interest in the sheer change of color and the incredible amount of endermen. Not sure how I feel about the respawning in the nether deal. Unless we see the return of crying obsidian and/or see new temple structures with complete but inactive nether portals I'm not sold on the idea. I do hope we see more mobs and a reduction in the size of the biomes (getting flashbacks to 1.7 grrr).
These changes are good. It made that nether is a bit less "hellish" and more looks like something from the Journey to the Center of the Earth. Why don't you replace the name of the soul sand and soul soil to the something diffrent? In my opinion It would be better for this new update. Tier better than diamonds will completly change the game, but Mojang does that every version and that works goodly (makes popularity). Try not to add magical-themed stuff
Okay, the new Basalt Delta biome is... Grim. Very grim. Unrelenting grey landscape, grey fog, blowing ash particles, difficult-to-traverse terrain (unsurprising for a lava field), and downright creepy ambience sounds. It fits the Nether well, I'd say! The main reason to come is for the blackstone (which can craft stone tools and furnaces) and the magma cubes - which seem to be the only mob that spawns. Also, all the basalt you could possibly want - you don't have to get it from Soulsand Valleys any more.
Perhaps it's just luck of the draw, but it took me a long time to find one, flying around the Nether. (Yes, I know I could have used locatebiome, but I wanted to get a better feel for the new Nether.) My impression is that the Nether Wastes are surprisingly rare and that Warped Forests are way too common - if they are meant to represent the Nether being warped by the End, I can only assume that the whole dimension is nearly taken over. Lots of Soulsand Valleys, too.
EDIT: Also, magma cubes can bounce on top of lava without sinking! Is that new? I don't recall seeing before. Also, I haven't seen any striders this update so far - I wonder if there's a glitch.
EDIT: I've seen striders now. Maybe they're limited to the Nether Wastes? That's the only biome I've seen them in so far.
The Basalt Delta is probably the most fitting biome for the Nether - it ought to be far more common than the other three, tied with Nether wastes (which really shouldn't be rare; rather, I think the new biomes should be rarer than the wastes to encourage exploration). The new blackstone could be very useful in archaic builds and medieval structures - that is, if you can get your hands on it. For someone like me with a very explored Netherland, I'll be traveling at least 1,000+ blocks in all directions to find the new biomes. I wonder if blackstone will be renewable/farmable like basalt, but to be clear, I don't think it needs to be.
I must be inclined to think that fortress updates are coming next. It's surprising that they haven't yet been touched in this update, which is why I imagine there are changes coming to them. Particularly, loot options could now be widely expanded to include new blocks/items like the crying obsidian or Soul Speed books (rare chance).
I haven't done too much research but... do we know if fortress generation is being widely affected by the generation changes? Will they become more scarce again?

That new biome is amazing. I do have on criticism about it and that's that it only has magma cubes spawning there. There's actually a few of the biomes that really lack any nice mob variety. Right now the biomes with the most mob variety are the crimson forest and nether wastes.
Nether Wastes: Zombie Piglins, Ghasts(uncommon), Magma Cubes(rare), Piglins(rare), Endermen(very rare)
Crimson Forest: Piglins, Hoglins, Zombie Piglins
Warped Forest: Endermen
Soulsand Valley: Skeletons, Ghasts
Basalt Delta: Magma Cubes
Non-biome specific spawns:
Nether Fort Specific: Wither Skeletons, Skeletons, Blazes, Magma Cubes
Lava Ocean: Striders
I feel like since the striders like warped fungus then they should live there in small lava lakes that would generate in the biome. They are passive so the biome would retain its peacefulness while adding some variety to the biome. Perhaps they could even spawn outside of lakes indicating that they are willing to get cold if it means getting some delicious warped goodies.
Blazes should definitely be an uncommon spawn in the basalt deltas. As beings of fire it would make sense for them to live in a biome focused on magma and ash. Ghasts should be here too as it's a bit odd that the Nether's primary flying denizens don't visit more biomes. The place really feels like it need to be more hostile as magma cubes are borderline harmless (although the vertical nature of the biome is easy for them to traverse which is great thinking on Mojang's side).
I feel like Zoglins should have a spot in the Nether wastes despite that biome being so heavily populated already. Besides the Zombie Piglins; most of the other mobs that spawn there are rare occurrences. The biome feels like its a place of exile for the zombified pigs so Zoglins would fit right in as uncommon spawns. Perhaps put zombie piglins on their ignore list so that there isn't constant carnage but that would also be an interesting aspect of the biome. I also want them to spawn here as they currently don't spawn anywhere (the reason of them not spawning since they are zombified by being in the overworld is not an excuse because I see plenty of zombie piglins spawning in the the Nether). This biome should also be more common than it currently is. It's very iconic and it would be sad to see it fall into obscurity.
Soulsand Valley needs something that isn't shooting at you on a constant basis. I understand that the place is supposed to be one of the most hostile biomes in the game but to have everything shooting at you is annoying. Make some kind of nether arthropod (that's not a stupid spider or silverfish reskin) that lives there. Perhaps a scorpion that ignores the slowing effects of soulsand (also immune to soul fire but not normal fire). Also make wither skeletons a rare spawn here. It makes no sense that they don't already spawn in this biome.

We know only at this point that bastions are being added for piglins. Fortresses may go completely unupdated since there was no mention of changing them, but I'd be disappointed if they didn't at least add an armor stand or something to them. Personally, undead horses in them would suit me best because they're a great place for horse riding - tall hallways, lots of riding gear and weaponry, lots of mobs that use height against you.
Nether fortresses are fortresses, so barracks with beds and chests full of tools (free explosives and broken clocks and map tools!), workshop rooms or appliances (think furnaces, brewing stands, armor stands), and solid art installations (statues or fountains? Rarely having paintings in the barracks makes sense) make sense.

I like all these ideas too.
Sweet, plus target blocks are added too. Now all we need to see is how bastions look like and if they make up for the sparseness of fortresses.
LP series? Not my style! Video series? Closer, but not quite. Survival journal, maybe? That's better. Now in Season 4 of the Legends of Quintropolis Journal (<< click to view)!! World download and more can be found there.
I thank you for the acknowledgement, sir. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
What in particular has blown you away this week?
That new biome is amazing. I do have on criticism about it and that's that it only has magma cubes spawning there. There's actually a few of the biomes that really lack any nice mob variety. Right now the biomes with the most mob variety are the crimson forest and nether wastes.
Non-biome specific spawns:
Praise be to Spode.
That's odd, striders are supposed to be most common in the basalt biome.
