I was wondering if anyone knows or thinks there will be any problems with existing nether portals now that y coordinate is being saved as part of the biome info and also in 1.6 the nether is going to get major biome updates.
I am still running 1.14.4 and as when calculating an overworld to nether portal or vice versa, as long as x and z were on target y coordinate didnt seem to matter.
Will it mater now? and also has anyone heard or read if the nether updat will be like the others in the sense that existing chunks will be unaffected?

I would expect they would do something similar to when ocean monuments were introduced. That is, if the chunk doesn't have a significant amount of time-inhabited then it gets removed and regenerated but if it does then it stays as the non-3d biome. You might have the rare fortress that wasn't all the way generated that could get really wonky, but that probably can be handled by checking chunk neighbors similar to entity ticking.

I doubt the way portals work will change, though that's just a feeling.
The Y coordinate does matter in certain circumstances, mostly if you have several portals close together.
It doesn't affect whether a Nether portal is close enough to the converted position of an Overworld portal that they can connect.
But it is taken into account when determining which portal is closest if there are several within range.
(Also, you can't port to a portal above the Nether bedrock ceiling although you can use it to port back to the Overworld.)

What is your understanding of the biome Y coordinate thing?
I'm imagining that that would allow one biome to sit on top of another?
Or do you think they are thinking of something else?
Just testing.
