I for one always thought Illagers should be able to do such a thing! It actually made no sense why they wouldn't be able to. Unless one imagines the Villagers are locking their doors to them perhaps, in which case maybe only Vindicators can break down doors like zombies which could be made to take time or be defeated by a design consideration to make breaking impossible like it is for zombies..
Given the extensive nature of the village/villager changes already intended for 1.14, it would make sense to wait until the effects of those were understood before adding more….

I guess one thought is that they could either do that or: "Blast the door(s) down." Which would leave yet-another Broken Door, behind in their murderous wake (say that 2X fast).
Given Zombies already did - whole Sieges (5+ ) of them - if anything, the main problem was they'd push-each other away from the doors, ahead-of Breaking them, so a few more might make it take longer. And so-would Vindicators, this seems more-"civilized," and less that they're carrying recoilless cannons or otherwise battering ram launchers - they're more careful, that's why they can use a crossbow (and re-cock it) - but Oh it multiplies the Difficulty of Defending if one's Not doing anything about those natural doors!
Anyway, here's to putting in Glass sniping "catwalks," between "safehouses." Celebrations (now) on all sides (left alive)!
Mojang doesn't like it when exploits undo specific features. If you figure out a way to prevent zombies from reaching the door so they can't break it down then Mojang applauds you, but if a zombie walks up to a door that you placed "incorrectly" and decides the door doesn't need to be broken (despite not being able to actually get through it) that's where Mojang starts looking at improving the game.
I'm just waiting for them to change the valid-house mechanics in a way that forces the house to be kept useable. If a villager can't get into the house, or is stuck inside and can't get out, it shouldn't be counted as a valid house. If you want to lock villagers into houses, you should have to bury a nametagged zombie close enough to the house that the villager won't go near the door.
mojang should allow villagers to open gate doors to use gate doors instead of regular doors
I don't think that would be a good idea either because I like using gates to protect farms and I don't want villagers stealing my crops. if they give villagers the ability to open gates they should advance their AI to tell what crops belong to them and which ones belong to the player.

It actually makes no sense why they would be able to, and yes, it would make defending villages extremely hard because if pillagers spawned in villages, they'd be able to get into the houses and kill all of the villagers which is why they cannot and should not be able to open doors. Anything you do to make it easier for pillagers to kill villagers makes it a lot harder to protect the villagers. Not even witches can open doors.

i think that the pillagrs with the axes (vindicators) should be able to chop down doors
If they implemented that it should only be on the same difficulty levels that zombies are able to do so which, I believe, is hardcore.

I consider those the same difficulty level, the only difference being one deletes upon death, the other doesn't.

we should have guards that can go into houses and defend the villagers or the villagers can craft weapons to defend themselves
I like that idea. After all they do have weapon and armor smiths in the game. Why not guards to use them? Why would you make weapons and not expect your people to use them?

the game seems to be getting stacked more and more against the villagers. why not just eliminate them now and cut to the chase lol
right now the only things that can get to my villagers are endermen and vexes
the golems are useless unless something is standing right in front of them.
if mojang really wants to improve things they can make the golems like the ipad version. those things run at you if you even bump a villager by accident and you never see them coming until they slam you into next week lol
they wait for you outside the villager homes too and if you happen to open a door, they slam you from 2 blocks away
standard practice for me now is as soon as i see a village in the distance i run to it and lock all villagers in their homes or workplaces before they get a chance to wander off away from the village. i lure the rest into houses by putting down and break a bed at night, mark it on a map and move on.
I really think this is a bad idea as it makes the village even harder to defend.
