"Illager patrols spawn a maximum of five pillagers (weight 55) or vindicators (weight 27) up to 200 blocks away from a village on grass or sand with a block light level of 0–8 and a sky light level of 10–15. "
Simply, securing the base against the Illagers works the same way like against any other hostile mobs: place enough torches?
Or does it mean that when the sky light level is 10 to 15, they can spawn even when the block light level block is greater than 8?
Hey guys, I partially agree with most on this. However I'm really enjoying the pillager update, its given new life to this game since its now a challenge. Im a bit different than most people who play this, Im currently playing the latest snapshot 19w12b in hardcore mode. I found a nice spot to build a castle in between three close by villages in plains biome. And let me tell you, I keep getting patrols every 2 seconds. I try to avoid killing the leaders. However I do agree there needs to be some better way to counter the endless spawning of Illager patrols and raids. Not to mention the crazy infinite spawning on their bases.
Balance suggestions:
1. Give us a ranged golem, the snow golem is pretty much useless. I would like to set up defensive towers around the villagers I can defend from. And a golem would be great automatic defense to deal with endless attacks. Sure make the golem very expensive in resources, but at least I can look forward to some counter measures.
2. In other modes outside of hardcore, make there be a checkbox option for pillager raids. People who play on easy would rarely enjoy this feature. In hardcore there should be no option for unchecking this. You want hardcore, you have to play at the games maximum hardness.
Heh: "Gole, er Gold(en) Golem"? ; it's actually a possibility, what with basically "Gold Biomes," of now-Badlands (formerly Mesa Biome). They'd still have to be destructible, though, speaking of balance; so they'd just forestall inevitable later problems: like - again - getting the Resources, to Build them.
Now: I need to do research; but I could Swear I Read something like this, is already-being (Possibly: Research; !) at-least considered (implemented..?). "(A) checkbox(es) for: Raids; something else (I forget, and I think it was one, but could be two-more 'checkboxes' )."
I figured it was a "Normal" /"Easy" set-of "modifiers," to - essentially - retain the Pre-1.14, Difficult(y)(ies). As for Hardcore Always having them XD / "heh" ("Hardercore"? heh's).
"Illager patrols spawn a maximum of five pillagers (weight 55) or vindicators (weight 27) up to 200 blocks away from a village on grass or sand with a block light level of 0–8 and a sky light level of 10–15. "

Yeah, I still gotta do - the nature of - more research. Research about: "block light (level)," vis-a-vis "sky light (level)"; like Why (the heck?) does my Farmland show "0" for One "Light (level)," and like 8+ (always, or the Crops Pop-off), for the Other "Light (level)"?
That's what - also - the Wiki's for! Not just the - prospective - Snapshots later-Updates!!
I just know that Everybody's said "Torches don't affect Illagers ( ' Spawning)." And /or "Illagers Spawn 'everywhere (in /around Villages) '" (really? "They're everywhere, they're everywhere!"??).
I'm not seeing any pillagers at all in 19w14a. I've been hanging around a two bell grassland village for days. In the previous snapshot though, at a different village, they were spawning all over me. There was also a bug where the raid towers weren't visible, and I was thinking that that village was perhaps right next to an invisible raid tower.

they march from the outside borders of the village sometimes if they don't detect you nearby they keep walking to find another village, ideally you can follow them and kill them outside of the village and not have to risk any villagers
There is another solution, but it's not the way we did things in 1.13. Simply make your home more than 256 blocks away from any village.
Right now I'm living in a big forest, and I haven't seen one pillager. The wandering trader comes around every few weeks and loses his llamas. If I really need to, the nearest village is 300 blocks away. I can walk there at dawn and be back in time for bed. I just ran over and swiped one of their cats.
I have done nothing to defend the village, except stay away so the chunks don't load.
I don't know if this will work after more updates... but the snapshot right before Pre-Release 1, I noticed that the pillagers would focus around a central point in the village, when there was no one they could see to attack.
And witches came and joined them... I had 3 witches and 2 raiding parties, 1 with that beast... all doing circles in the the middle of the village.
The village was so spread out, walls around it didn't make sense... and besides it was too late... the pillagers were IN the village.
So I built the wall around them.
Wide at first... then I played QIX with them and closed the wall in smaller and smaller.
Then I dumped a bucket of lava in... and that killed the pillagers... but not the witches... who apparently can heal themselves.
So I had to go kill the witches one at a time, healing in between.
When all the bad guys were gone, I opened up some holes in the wall... in case a new raid formed and came back in... then I closed the holes and did this all over again.
Of course after the 2nd or 3rd raid, all the villagers were dead... the iron golem destroyed... and the whole game was revolving around RAID!
xisumavoid (name?) just did a YouTube Vid. In it, he experimented pretty exhaustively (this released about a Week ago, it'd said) with technical Game tools, as well.
At one point, he even (as the most-specific, and likely most-Game intensive, and Building thing) used a Nether Portal to Portal-in to a given site. Said that Illagers'd Spawn 32 Blocks from the Player (though I haven't seen anyone else say Illagers do this, so this was probably because it was a Pillager Outpost) - yeah, it seemed to me that this was a "minimum distance," Hostile-Spawning, thing - don't Zombies Spawn-in (due to others attacking /being attacked) closer, though?
Anyway, the trick he was using was not-just to have a significantly shorter distance - and so time - to travel (than even regular Nether Portals - these were like 100 Blocks apart, Max. , in the Nether - possibly less so they'd been carefully-"tweaked" for one-way more-rapid Portaling, "snapping-around" [and multi-use of same Portal, site from a given-other, site - more than one - that is]). He was starting a Raid (with an artificially created Village, via Villager-and-Bed).
Which he got to focus on his Mob Trap and /or him, being close-to the center of it (the focus), near where he'd Portaled-in - his first contact with /entering a Village - and I know the Nether is Generally not an "Easy" technique to avoid Hostile Mobs(! if you think about it!!). But if the end-goal is less total Raids - getting them to concentrate on another given part of a Village(..?) - sounds interesting.

According to the wiki, Patrols won't spawn on anything other than grass or sand, and are affected by light level. I haven't tested to confirm this, but it seems to be true. I have a world where they kept spawning in one corner of my home base. Once I went crazy with lights, it stopped.
Raids still can't be stopped, but that's the purpose.
So, light up all areas in your village beyond light level 8, and that should stop the spawning. They also can't spawn indoors as they require a sky light level as well.
Ravager [Illager Beast] hit box is given as 1.95 square & 2.2 high (as of 19w13b, the most recent information I found).
This suggests running through a 1-wide gap (or under a 2-high roof)at the base of a 'funnel' would be sufficient to hold it in place (provided it cannot pathfind around the obstacle). Suspending lava above the player exit (and using a water streamn to help hold the beast in place) may be a viable means of killing it.
Getting back to the OP question of "entirely stopping illagers/pillagers from spawning within my village":
Placing the entire village underground (skyview is no longer required to validate a village) has been shown to work through the later snapshots and may still in the current 'release' version…

WARNING: I have an extemely "grindy" playstyle; YMMV — if this doesn't seem fun to you, mine what you can from it & bin the rest.
I having the same problem now. I usually build my house in the field and using touch & fence to keep the mob out. All block in my house boundary having light level of 9 or more at least. But they still spawn no matter what.
Inside fence if I'm far enough to that area, just outside the fence if I'm AFK in the center or faraway if I'm doing something close to fence and game decide to spawn them at that direction.
I didn't try the raid yet, but just the patrol is already **** me enough more than the absolute useless Phantom. Never want to care with raid now. Over 9000% that it not worth the villager population and SAN.
-Lost my first pillager raid. all villagers and golems died.
-spent 5 hours to find a single zombie villager and cured it.
-Still looking for a second Zombie villager to cure and start repopulating the village.
-2 days after the first zombie villager cured, a Pillager Patrol spawned out of nowhere and killed my only villager as soon as I decided to go fishing 20 blocks away from the village meeting point.
-cried because a crafted golden apple and 5 hours went to waste and have to start all over again.
when I was looking for a pillager patrol nothing spawned close to the village. But when I really don't want pillager patrols to spawn a group of pillagers spawned and killed my last villager when I barely left the villager alone for 10 seconds.
Funny thing, I have been hanging around my village in my home base for a few days now and havent seen a single pillager. Maybe it has something to do with the fact Im living on an Island ha. I guess ill remove few existing grass and sand patches from within the village and will make a grass Island away from my village with a path of death which they will never make

i've been playing on desert/savana and no signs of pillagers anywhere when this happens i usually go out and look for them myself but no luck no signs of them or wandering villager i've noticed the mob spwning has somewhat been fixed
Okay so yes the pillager update is very difficult. This may NOT be the answer, however, I found a nearby pillager outpost and destroyed all entities as well as destroyed the fort. Since then, the village (closest to outpost) has not been attacked. So, theoretically, that might be how you stop the raids. I was cursed with BAD OMEN so I got me a bucket of milk and dealt with that issue and now this village is secured. I two-high fenced around the village and we are okay now!
Pillagers have quickly become annoying even though the milk (thankfully!) erases the Bad Omen effect.
They spawn everywhere. anytime, and often with no way to prevent it. I've grown so tired of seeing them suddenly in front of me and then sigh as I go off them.
Give them a few spawners in their raid towers or something! Stop them from day spawning! Something that can let us secure the areas around our villages!
Tip for others:
If you know you don't have cows nearby, a good tactic is to line up the bannered leader between you and another pillager with your shield up.
Let the other pillager and your deflected arrows kill the leader. Take a swing or two from the get-go to save time and your shield from a lot of damage.
I'm so done with this particular aspect of 1.14. We're trying to set up a new server (1.14.1 currently), and these illager patrols are freaking nerfing us left and right early game. We're doing things proper survival, with minimal admin commands, and they keep killing us off out of nowhere. Basically, we set our spawn area theoretically far enough from the closest village, and started doing our thing. We did a lot of work flattening our 17x17 spawn (yes that's correct dimensions for ours) to Y=63, lit it all up, fenced it in, etc. We can prevent all mobs EXCEPT the stupid pillagers.
There is a recurring patrol spawn point right near our spawn chunks center, which is DEFINITELY over 256 blocks away from a village. We have no breeders, etc in spawn; we've just been doing initial terraforming and set up. This is our naked start spawn area, and it's super frustrating to not be able to shut illager patrols off. This has GOT to change. I created a bug report on it if you are so inclined to add your 2 cents and upvote it. https://bugs.mojang.com/projects/MC/issues/MC-152707

Pre-3... I started in a village with 4 villagers.
There was a raid I missed that killed 3.
So I had 1 left.
I built a sandstone wall with 2 acacia gates around my village.
That kept the next raid out.
I killed those 4 over the wall.
And as soon as I was done... another raid formed on the other side of town.
I rang the bell and the 1 villager didn't go inside.
I am pretty sure he was killed by crossbowmen from outside the wall while I was dealing with the axe-men.
That raid bar disappeared, even though the pillagers were still outside the village.
So the raid play is better...
...if you build a wall around your village.
Villager survival is pretty low to none still.

In this final release of 1.14, the RAID patrols are finally within reason.
Although they are still coming back to back.
And the only way I have figured out how to deal with the BEAST (I forget its name)...
...is to:
1.) Put anything you want to keep someplace safe. (In a chest or barrel.)
2.) Dig a "tiger trap" hole... I think I went 4 or 5 deep, and big enough to hold the thing.
3.) Get the beast to chase you.
4.) Jump in the hole... and get it to follow you.
5.) Die... you were going to anyways.
6.) Go put your armor back on... get a pail of lava... and pour it on the thing to kill it.
(Although I wondered if I left it alive buried in the village, if that would prevent more raids???)

Hi,
I had the same problem and wrote a Vanilla Jar Mod to be able to disable illager patrols (and raids, zombie sieges). Its for 1.14.2.
See this post: https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding-java-edition/minecraft-mods/2968210-vanilla-jar-mod-1-14-2-villagepeace
