Interesting. I wouldn't hold my breath, as it could easily end up one of those things in the code that never gets implemented, but... Maybe?
Nether villages would presumably be of zombie pigmen. I could definitely get behind that. Presumably they would have some sort of unique trades to make them worthwhile. They'd have to have different professions, too - there aren't likely to be fishermen or cartographers or shepherds in the Nether!
I'm not sure if I like the idea of End villages. I get the impression that the End is *supposed* to be rather barren. And would the villagers be endermen? They seem too alien to try to trade with.
Both the Nether and especially the End need more stuff, so these would be much-welcomed. Hopefully if they do implement them, they don't get lazy with it and just plop some random villagers with new jobs in them. I'm hoping for actual new mobs for the villages in other dimensions. I think ender-people would be hilarious, just randomly teleporting around and thwarting peoples' efforts to corral them.
I thought the Nether fortresses and the End cities were called villages in the code already, no? The only thing that confuses me is the raid part, is there going to be Pillagers in the Nether and End?
To sum up: Those files have been in the game for years. They're there to keep track of any villages that the player might form in the Nether and the End.
EDIT: I should say that the 'village' files have been in the game. The new 'raid' files are presumably for raiding villages the player forms in those dimensions.

I was going to comment this too! But no, hang on, the OP wasn't talking about the old villages_nether.dat and villages_end.dat files, they were talking about two new raids_nether.dat and raids_end.dat files!

This would be exciting. Why would pillagers want to explore such far-off and dangerous places unless they have something specific to find there? The shulker and blaze/wither-skeleton guards should be more challenging than players and iron golems but not by that much.

Damn. I should have known better than to expect good things.
I'm not as cynical as you, but also unlike you I can see a very bad side to how other-dimensional villages would be added. The game could get very cringey-RPG-like if that's done wrong or the structures are too common/ overdone. I think adding them is more of a variety/atmosphere thing than a practical one.
Looking at this topic again, I take back my earlier assumption. I just realized it's entirely possible these new _raid.dat files are exactly like the old village.dat files - for raids that can still spawn if you build a village in another dimension.
But that also implies something troubling - are illagers going to follow and harass villagers everywhere you take them?

Yep.

It does seem a little odd, yes. But think what would be required for a raid to actually happen: You'd need to kill a patrol leader, then get to your extradimensional village within 30 seconds! For the End in particular, that would be quite a feat.
Mind you, I think the Bad Omen effect is way too short - to be meaningful, I'd think it should last for several Minecraft days, perhaps even a whole month. If it is lengthened, then extradimensional raids are back in the realm of possibility.
If I were Mojang, I'd just say that raids aren't a problem in other dimensions. But evidently they feel differently.

Can instead bring a patrol leader into said dimension, then kill it. Luring into a minecart is probably easiest way (assuming you nametag). I think it's neat to have such a possibility, even if it's hard. However for villages to even exist in the nether is almost always going to be a creative mode feat I think, you have to break the bedrock above and expose sky as I have done in a creative world where I made a nether village.

Oh right, there's no sky in the Nether anyway. Scratch that. And villagers can't fly elytra or throw ender-pearls. These files must be only for Creative mode and a few extremists trying to have a village on the main End island.
Technically this allows you to almost farm illagers if you can figure out a good build and use the dimension's properties wisel...

In principle you could build a bridge from the main End island to the outer ones in survival. It would be extremely time-consuming, but it could be done.
You could even get elytra without killing the Ender dragon.

In principle you could build a working computer in Minecraft. Doesn't mean a sane person would do it though!

I'd thought that maybe the "Ender-Villagers" would only be Tradeable-with by Not-looking at them *strains Brains to see with (its) eyes at back of head* ..?!

And /or Pigllager-Pigmen. With more-dangerous Igllagers.. such as Vindicator-Pigs(!)... that'd kill would-be Farmers.
These would be interesting too, sadly I don't see either mob getting a more sentient variant this update as they haven't so much as hinted towards changing other dimensions in the update pages/videos.

None of you think it would be odd to have villages in the Nether or End? Neither of these places seem like somewhere people would live and right up until the flattening the Nether was actually called Hell in the game code. Sure, the Nether and End are pretty barren compared to the overworld but it seems fitting given how inhospitable the dimensions are. The nether has no water and could not rationally support life so I think putting villages there would be extremely unfitting. Perhaps if the villages were ruined villages and only zombie villagers spawned in them it could be fitting, you could even have broken portals generating next to them as if the villagers tried to colonize the nether but failed, but I reject the idea of villagers naturally living in the Nether when they can't even survive a few zombies without player intervention. I'd rather see them do something more substantial with their existing fortresses, which are little more than massive empty buildings, than shoehorn villages into an area of the game deigned to be as unforgiving as possible. The End would be an even more problematic place to rationalize villages since without bridges leaving the main island we'd be left with the question "How did these guys get here?" I mean, the player has to locate a hidden stronghold, active the portal, defeat a dragon, and then either build a bridge to the outer islands or take the End gate. After all that effort and while raiding End Cities you just stumble across a village in the middle of absolute nothing and find villagers staring at you like 'what took so long?' Nope- I don't buy it. Maybe if the villages were really funky and the villagers were something between a villager and an enderman, as if they were stranded there by the dragon and started to become endermen, it could be thematic but as they are villages aren't really fitting with the dimension.
I agree that the Nether and the End could use a bit more usefulness to encourage return exploring but I also think that allyourbasesaregone was right in that adding villages to these dimensions would take some very special attention and care in implementation and could either be done very well or very poorly. Given the inhospitable nature of the dimensions villages and villagers as they currently exist don't really fit and I think they'd be better off designing whole new mobs and village-like structures for those dimensions rather than having them similar or related to overworld villages.
Just found these files in the world save folder (18w47a snapshot). Does that mean that nether and end villages will be added???
You could be right.
Just looked through a saved game for latest snapshot (18w48b) & found these as well

If so, does that mean they'd be raided by the zombie pigmen? Yikes.
And... The mystery is resolved.
Pity. Nether villages would have been interesting.
More information from the wiki.

Look at all these possibilities! There is definitely still a lot of potential in these two file names, and yes they are definitely new since 18w47a.

If we do get Nether Villages that will be a amazing addition to the Nether it’s a pretty boring place when you explore most of it.
Well, we've had an update improving oceans, and one improving villages. I imagine one to improve the Nether will turn up soon.
