I... I think...I think they added bulk crafting to the recipe book... I haven't seen the snapshot yet, but the changelog states that they added shift-click to the recipe book and the only thing that could mean is... bulk crafting... the fact that the recipe book could only craft one item seemed to be one of the only drawbacks to using it instead of shape, but now?
I wish the recipe book it was just a guide, only telling you what you need to craft something, instead of also allowing you to craft that item. It seems like people would just get lazy, ignoring the recipes and just craft the items without memorizing them. Or maybe not, I don't know.

You mean like they already do for anything that they don't craft often? Most of the time people just pop open the wiki and use it rather than memorize the uncommon recipes.

No, you dont... you literally start a new world with 0 recipies unlocked. Sure, collecting a material gives you some of it's recipies, but it's still a snapshot and things are subject to change. Also, shape crafting still has relevance, say, if you want to craft a large amount of shovels, it'd be faster to use shape as the book only does one at a time. Or for instance, if you just memorized a recipe, instead of having to search for it in the book, you'd use shape crafting to make it.
w The case of crafting stacks was valid until today (snapshot 17w14a). They added a shift click option, as expected.
I don't get why figuring out shapes is such an issue. That doesn't break a sense of exploration, not once in my hundreds of hours did I randomly move around blocks and had a feeling of "discovery" when I somehow magically figured out a recipe. Everyone already went on the internet to figure out the recipes, having the shapes "spoiled" for them, this just removes the middle man of having to open a browser, and it's spoil free!
You don't have to worry about figuring out how to unlock a beacon or shulker boxes too early because they require end-game crafting materials. Plus there's room for improvement since this is an unfinished feature. Currently chests are unlocked by having 8 (Maybe 9?) items in your inventory rather than picking up wood. This means there's potential for improvement.
I completely agree it was not working before. Nobody discovered shapes, instead people look on the Internet. But here with the recipe book I have the feeling instead of fixing the system it just bypass it completely.
Right now, and even moreso with the shift feature added in 17w14a, I'm 100% convinced shapes have become pointless.
Imagine you replace it with a list of ingredient (like 2x Stick 3x Stone for the Stone Pickaxe) and you get the exact same gameplay. The Recipe book is just so better to use.
Now whether that's good or not is up to debate.
I'm with oCrapa on this one. The recipe book doesn't really serve much a purpose to anyone with experience, and with the new changes you can't quite craft with stacks anymore, something it was good for. With more time using it, it just feels... odd. Glad it's toggle-able though and hope it stays that way.
Didn't realize until recently that the old achievements were removed and replaced completely by advancements. I'm cool with adding in modular advancement support, but Minecraft just lost more of it's character with the loss of our beloved achievements.
There are new advancements added to vanilla with every snapshot, in the most recent one "Sniper Duel" returned, under the "adventure" tab. It seems likley that all the quirky achievements will be returning, and the bland ones have oppurtunity to be reworked, being a snapshot and all.
What do we all think about the fact that you can tame parrots? I like the idea. I like how you can tame them with cookies, so it isn't really insanely easy to tame them or insanely hard. I like how the look on players' shoulders, but I don't really like that they will go off if you jump. I know that is supposed to be a way to get them off of you, but as someone who jumps around a lot, well, yeah. THEY KEEP COMING OFF WHEN I DON'T WANT THEM TO LOL. All in all, I really like the idea.
The new Advancements clearly aren't finished yet, so there's no point in comparing them to Achievements yet.
I suspect we'll see some, though not all, of the more distinctive Achievements reappear as Advancements. _Diamonds To You!_ was always rather silly, and I don't see much use in the sort of triggers and conditions that would be necessary to make it work.
I'm a little curious as to what new triggers will be necessary to duplicate _When Pigs Fly_. There's currently a trigger for a player killing a mob, but none I can see for mobs dying from non-player causes.
_On a Rail_ would in principle be pretty easy to do, but they haven't laid the groundwork yet.
_Return to Sender_ could be done right now, but is probably waiting on a Nether tab.
Likewise, _The Lie_ is quite doable, as are several other food achievements, but they're likely waiting on a Food tab.
It's always annoyed me that there's no achievement for breeding a mule, but that's really easy to add now.

I feel the shaped recipes makes things unique enough to where it'll stay, pointless or not.
It's still much faster to just place down a couple of materials and fast-craft from there rather than having to sift through tabs to find the items you want. Unless I'm just like the slowest tabber in the world, I guess.
Either way I feel it's a change that only has a positive effect. New players might like it and it doesn't spoil anything for them, old players that don't like it can ignore it and move on.
I get it might bother some people because "that's not how you're supposed to play" or "No respect for older crafting" or whatever, but I feel that's a bit selfish and it's entirely on you if you let something like that get to you.
Y'know, pondering on the new advancements, the recipes, the loot tables, and also the Pocket Edition add-ons, I suspect we're very gradually getting the long-awaited modding API.
The key will be when (if?) we get the ability to register new blocks through JSON files. Once that happens, the sky's the limit. (Entities will likely come after that.)
I wonder if we'll see a 'Modding Update' in the not-too-distant future.

Blocks/Entities have very complex and different behaviors so I'm not sure how they would pull that off. JSON is designed to store structures, not to describe logic. For the logic (and many other things) they would probably just expose an API in whatever language they want.

Oh, I grant that a block done through JSON wouldn't be too fancy - that would require code. But if all you want is a block with specified texture, hardness, blast resistance, illuminance, transparency, redstone power, recipe, and drops, that would be quite easy. And that covers an awful lot of blocks out there.
You could also probably specify certain actions, even commands, when it's clicked on or the like. But anything more complex than that would need code. You're not going to create something like the comparator just with JSON, for example.
EDIT: Likewise, we've seen with the add-ons that you can do quite a bit to alter existing mobs with JSON. All we would need is a way to register a new mob, even if it has to use one of the existing models, and specify where and under what conditions it spawns.
Jumping back a bit to the birds, especially now that they got a bit more done to them in this last snapshot, I wanted to explain my reasoning behind not wanting them in the game.
Firstly, the game does not in any way, shape, or form feel 'dead' without them. Nor do they make it feel more lively. In fact, it was rather the ABSENCE of lots of mobs, especially in the old Alpha and Beta terrains, that gave the game a lot of its mysterious and lively feel. That also leads into the second point... The other reason I don't think there should be birds in Minecraft is for the same reason Horses don't, (Although by far Horses at to this day the single worst thing ever added to the game). It's because they don't FIT. Minecraft has always had its own feeling to it, like some cool, alien world with some similarities to our own, but it is NOT EARTH. And Horses, Llamas, Polar Bears, and now Birds... They make it feel less like Minecraft, and more like a blocky Earth.
Again, I have nothing against people that like the birds. I'm glad you can enjoy them. But I do want people to consider just what their addition means for the game, beyond themselves.

Also, still no Text-to-Speech for /say ....
You forgot the damn rabbits. If it hurts when you try to think about them, don't, you probably had a trauma when you first saw these mo'creature-ish nightmares ruining once beautiful blocky landscapes. I did.
I don't like the logic (more animals == always better) either. They don't look very aesthetic to me, and the few gameplay they bring don't seem very worthy of the huge amount of time devs spend on them.
Only advantage I find with using the recipe book over shaped crafting is when crafting a bunch of different items in quick succession.
Snapshots, yes.

Hi
I do believe the plus side to the recipe book is, you can ignore it. Just do what you have been doing all this time.

Think about it, CAKE!
When you're going to craft a cake and you forget an ingredient. "He needs some milk!"

Uh, guys? Am I missing something, or is there no recipe for a book anywhere in the snapshot?
Easy enough to add it, as well as a way to be given the recipe, but I don't see it anywhere.
From what I hear books (And I think firework rockets?) are currently unable to be crafted. Probably because of the new way it's handled.
It'll be fixed eventually.
