There's only 8 block ID's left in the game so that's not really something they can do ATM.
Uh, that probably means they will have to increase this. Minecraft is undoubtedly going to get more blocks added, so having only 8 IDs left is nowhere near enough for future additions

I am confused what you mean by there is 8 id left? I thought there is million of them. if that is true then this "How to mod in 1.8" lied to me about block id!
I like the new blocks. The Terracotta ones are interesting for sure; I can definitely see myself using all the new blocks. But this is what bugs me:
Classic Mojang adds these cool new blocks, with nice smooth textures and everything... but no slabs, stairs, walls, or anything to go with them. The moment I started playing around with the concrete blocks, I wanted to create a cool structure using a border of black stairs with red concrete blocks on the inside. But of course, I was let down. It's nice and all that they are adding these new blocks, but that only increases the number of blocks that do not have the other variants. IMO, every set of blocks should have stairs, slabs, and walls - heck, it would be interesting to have doors, fences, and gates for all of them too. Stone Doors might be weird, but... at least you would have the option if you so chose to use it; and to be honest, it actually doesn't sound that weird to me. I could definitely see a use a stone door - and perhaps the variant (stone, andesite, diorite, granite) would determine color and possibly design. I almost feel like Mojang is only doing the minimum they can do.
I mean, here's an example. They added the red nether brick blocks, which were just recolored nether brick blocks. Adding slabs and stairs for the red nether bricks should have been extremely trivial - they are already there for nether bricks... and yet, apparently not. There are so many things I could have built better if I had the correct block collection - if they can't even add stairs and slabs for a trivial case, then there is no hope that they will ever add them for any others.

EDIT: I found out that limit block id is 255
I'm pretty sure I recall that 255 was the old block id limit before the Anvil update. I think the id limit is in excess of 4000 now.
This bugs me since a while too. There are so much nice looking blocks that could be used for stairs and slabs too but for whatever reason they never made it into the game And imho this doesn't even sound like it would be much work implementing them.
Ice, block of... (iron, diamond, emerald, etc.), glass, obsidian, raw wood, glowstone, hardened clay, endstone, prismarine, etc...
For years, there's a hard limit of 256 block types, each with up to 16 data values, Vanilla MC can handle. As of the latest snapshot, we're practically hit this limit, and something has to be done to add more block types. You can see any block's numerical ID in an inventory by enabling Advanced Tooltips (F3 + h).
========================================================================
Slabs use two block IDs to define if it's a single or double slab.
The ID for single slabs, ex: #44 or minecraft:stone_slab, is responsible for determining the texture to use for the slab and its orientation: top or bottom half of the block space. This ID can support up to eight types.
-
Another ID, ex: #43 or minecraft:double_stone_slab, is needed to store data for two slabs of the same material placed in one block space. Although most blocks only require one double slab variant, blocks with different top and bottom textures, like sandstone and quartz, need two, even though some of them are not obtainable in Survival Mode, at this time. To keep consistency with singles, developers store at most double slabs for eight full blocks they correspond to.
Compared to slabs, stairs are much more complex. Because of this, every type of stair takes up its own block ID, making them about 4 times more expensive than slabs to implement. Stairs can face any of four cardinal directions, flipped right-side up or up-side down, and form corners with other stair blocks. Technically, stairs have 32 orientations they can be in, but metadata is only need for 8 of them. Cornered stairs don't use the same data.
.
Now, think about what would happen if prior to 1.12, stairs and slabs were prioritized over other blocks.
.
..
...
If you can't figure it out...
Mojang would be unable to add all of the interesting and diverse blocks we have:
Beacon, Bone Block, Redstone Block, Observer, Hopper, Comparator, Shulker Box, Magma Block, End Gateway, Chorus Plant and Chorus Flower, Prismarine, Sea Lantern, End Rod, Glazed Terracotta, Daylight Sensor, etc.
And, they would likely hit the same problem with the present block ID limit of 0 to 255 they're having right now, but a lot sooner.
I think this discussion is getting a bit too far from the main thread topic. This thread is for discussing the actual new content and changes made by the 1.12 snapshots and eventual release. The discussion about stairs/slabs and block IDs needs to be moved elsewhere.
Gooooosh I'm falling so far behind. I never really played every snapshot as they released (I always waited for the official ones), but I used to follow them by the day. Now, I'm one, going on two, versions behind again, and need to catch up on features being added, but it's exciting.
The concrete blocks look nice. I need to learn how they work, but I can see myself using them.
I'm mixed on the wool changes. The new colors may be better, but that does mean all this time, anyone who made anything around the old colors might not like it. I'm impartial to it mostly because I can adjust it, since I sort of stayed with my old favorite texture pack and try and adjust it to my liking though (which is hard, and half the reason I'm typically a few versions behind, so I have immense respect for the people who actually make/update resource packs).
The Terracota blocks or whatever are incredible. I probably won't use them all too much myself (like rugs), but I think they are fantastic.
Dyeable beds is coming? Choosing which painting you get? Both are a long time coming and only good things.
What's being changed with "zombie pigmen and beds" and "inventory saving" that the fifth post refers to?
As a survival mode player who focuses on building a lot, this update appeals to me a lot. Someone mentioned birds, haha, and hopefully in some update, sometime, we do get stuff that adds to the atmosphere and livelihood (although some argue the world should be more static and you're more alone).
There has to be more than just Terracotta & Concrete...
PVP Legend
There's the inventory saving, plus, there's only been 1 snapshot. Give it some time.
Figured it was time for a change.
Thought they called it done? They're still working on it?

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
That is correct. About 4096, to be exact.
Figured it was time for a change.
Where is that info come from?
4096 is 2^12; the limit for 12 bit integer numbers

At the moment, here's what's needed to add a new slab and stair block:
Slabs:
*2 Block IDs for every 8 textures.

I like the 1.12 update. I love the new colors and concrete. and rumor has it that they will add colorful magical unicorns.

I'm very grateful that we're getting avians in Minecraft. I personally love such an idea.
What I don't like is the complaints we're already getting. Jeezes, this community sometimes...
Figured it was time for a change.
Neutral zombie pigmen won't keep you from sleeping in a bed.

When is that next snapshot coming out?
When you're going to craft a cake and you forget an ingredient. "He needs some milk!"
Next week (link); usually on Wednesdays
Am I the only one to notice the parrot in the snapshot image? To the right of the far right banner.
When you're going to craft a cake and you forget an ingredient. "He needs some milk!"
That's not a parrot. It's grumm. He hides in every picture.
