Now what this is saying is that anyone with windows 7+ can use the new launcher but anything younger will have to suffice with the old launcher (acting as though java launcher is bad or something)
Fortunately for me, I have windows VISTA and I bought MINECRAFT FOR PC.
I can't express how I actually feel about this on here except resembling the situation in sight of the words, "cow manure".
I bought minecraft for PC, not windows 7. not windows 10. not windows fort knox. I bought minecraft for pc.
This is where I have to say that microsoft has totally screwed up minecraft and I may have to stop playing before the company forces me to stop playing because I don't have the newest edition of windows. (This is illigal, because I bought something, to take it back away from me is stealing)
I did not sign a disclaimer when purchasing minecraft stating that I will willingly purchase microsoft products to be able to play minecraft. (is that what windows is? a reoccurring fee to playing minecraft?)
I like vista. I've been using vista for about 10 years. I know it, I enjoy it, and it works. If anything goes wrong, super simple to reassemble.
I'm upset at this motion... for I see its implications.
Minecraft NEVER should have sold out.... soon enough it will be, "You need windows 15 to play minecraft, because the past 14 versions didn't have enough security features."
like, cmon, get real here.
Pay money to upgrade my OS so it asks me more questions than it already does, and so it hides my file extensions and files from me?
I dread having to install things like that though :|
It also takes a slight amount longer to explore through files on linux. (I have set up ubuntu, gnome, and kali though)
Enjoyed kali the most.
edit:
you are right though, linux will be getting the new launcher too.
If you use linux someone can take root of your computer, access, remove, add, modify files. And perform actions while you are using it. (within around 5 minutes it says) (So really about 22 seconds)
(I'm on vista, please forgive me, only takes longer on windows after vista.)
linux is faster than 7, 8, and 10 certainly. If I could count the hours of my life that I have sat there clicking "yes" to confirm I clicked something.... I log on to my administrator account to be asked if I'm an administrator, that's why I made an administrator account.... whole reason.
I see that this vista pc has worked solidly for 10 years. What's wrong with that? Oh right... that's whats wrong with it. Must have loads of bugs in it like windows 10 or have a security flaw...
I'm not sure what you're ranting about. Nothings being taken away from you. The new launcher does things that are only available on newer OS technology. I'm not exactly sure what the new launcher can do that the old java launcher can't though. Do you?
I think the underlying reason for the change though is Microsoft wanting to move away from Java as much as possible since none of the other Minecraft platforms use it and they probably have plans involving some cross platform functionality.

That's kinda what I was getting at though. PC needs to stay as java instead of microsoft believing they have the nicer platform. Look at their "add-ons" for crying out loud. (They don't even add anything!)
Maybe you could make a nicer launcher that way. But is it backwards compatible? no. Does it function nicer? no.
What I'm getting at is this microsoft bs has gone too far. And its making minecraft go in a downward spiral by using it as a tool to make microsoft platforms seem superior to java platforms, at the same time shoving windows updates down peoples throats.
I don't get upgrades because I have a windows computer that is pc? That's just not right. linux, apple, and windows past 7 get this update. but not vista? Now I have a *very hard time believing that linux has something vista doesn't.
The difference between windows vista and 8? adjusted security features, longer file navigation. Its just another way of microsoft saying "screw you". That's how I feel. But really, its like Minecraft teaming up with microsoft to say, "screw you". Which really.... It almost breaks my heart ya know </3
"! Operating system : Windows XP and Windows Vista aren't supported for windows 10 upgrade."
That was the last time they said "screw you" to me when they offered free vista upgrades for people who bought vista after such and such date. (mine wasn't purchased after such and such date)
So getting ripped off for being a first buyer...
Sorry that you like living in the past, but we have to move forward to progress.
And keep supporting a version of Windows that's 10 years old is just ridiculous. Things change, accept it.
Windows actually made it harder to navigate through the system after vista, and made it harder to find your files and etc.
Technically windows 10 is a downgrade of vista as far as usability goes.
I agree with you that progress is moving forward. But, that is moving backwards and selling people security features they don't need for money.
I know you've heard, "If it aint broke, don't fix it.".
Should they stop supporting linux because its over 10 years old? Or how about apple/mac? I honestly have no problem with an operating system that lasts a lifetime.
Also removing java from minecraft is a disastrous miserable idea, it doesn't need changing. If that is the plan though, I would like to know so I can just quit wasting my time and life and stop playing minecraft entirely because microsoft likes to ruin and decimate creativity.
You could always use a third-party launcher if the native one doesn't work.
The only thing I'm concerned about is mod support; in particular, the sort of mods that are installed by manually adding files to the Minecraft version jar instead of using an installer (of which I'm still wondering why there isn't a "generic" installer which you add your mod files to and have it install them in the version and profile name you specify with a config file - it would make it MUCH easier for others to use my mods); even the current launcher made it much harder to manually mod the game earlier this year by redownloading the jar even if you renamed it unless you edit out some lines from the json file or use an older json from before they added them (I still have the json for 1.6.4 from before they changed it and it still works fine; the launcher luckily does not touch modified jsons - yet. I still get a bit paranoid whenever the launcher updates itself and make backups of my files before playing to be safe).

(of which I'm still wondering why there isn't a "generic" installer
which you add your mod files to and have it install them in the version
and profile name you specify with a config file - it would make it MUCH
easier for others to use my mods);
Most likely:
Because Microsoft does not support and is against any modification of its games.
Because they like making money off of an idea they don't support, and don't have to hire anyone for.
(really the the reason that microsoft is so adamant against modification is because the potential their platform has is limited, again "add-ons", then look at forge....)
go figure.
Because Microsoft is about pushing the cellphone version of the game and sales. (minecon)
This is both petty and extremely entitled. Mojang never guaranteed that you would be able to play Minecraft. If you read the EULA, you are granted a license that allows you to install and play Minecraft, there is no guarantee you will always be able to play.
This isn't "MS nonsense" either, that's utter nonsense. Dropping support for old and outdated OSes, software and hardware is a common development practice. Updates to software/hardware change things, new and better ways of doing things are introduced. This means you need to write compatibility code for older versions, or sometimes older versions of software/hardware are incompatible with your product due to changes you had to make to support the newer versions of the software/hardware. Unfortunately this means losing some users who use outdated software/hardware. Additionaly, writing code takes dev time, dev time costs money, and devs aren't cheap. If there aren't enough users of the old software/hardware to justify that expense, support will be dropped. You should understand this, you make mods, you sure wouldn't support every version of MC since Pre-0.0.0(7 years out of date compared to Vista's 9).

Actually, I'm pretty sure Microsoft has nothing to do with why there isn't a "generic" mod installer, by which I mean something made by modders, not Mojang, as a tool to distribute non-Forge mods so you do not need to write your own installer to avoid cumbersome, error-prone manual installation; for example, Optifine's creator made their own installer for their mod (it can still be installed manually, as I do myself, or loaded by Forge); Forge has its own, and so on - why not just a blank installer (basically just the code that displays a GUI and does all the installation work) that you add your mod files to, along with a configuration file to specify the version and profile name, and it installs the mod when you run it (it can't be that hard to do; just have a folder inside the installer jar where you place your mod files and it installs anything it finds in it; here is what the Optifine jar for 1.6.4 looks like, the installer itself is in the optifine folder while the actual mod files are all of the class files and the assets folder).
I'm still wondering why there isn't a "generic" installer which you add your mod files to and have it install them in the version and profile name you specify with a config file - it would make it MUCH easier for others to use my mods
Have you tried MultiMC? It allows easy creation and management of profiles, as well as easy installation of both Forge and .jar mods.

I'm not asking for myself, since I find it very easy to install jar mods, but for others who might want to use them (I mainly make them for myself but post them here since others might want to try them; at least one of my mods was even expanded upon and turned into a Forge mod by somebody else), and while I suggested that the OP could use a 3rd party launcher if the official one no longer works not everybody would want to just to run mods for various reasons. I don't have any problem with the way the official launcher handles profiles either.
You do realize Microsoft owns Minecraft? Of course they are going to wan't you to pay to upgrade but Windows 10 is a good operating system and not very expensive.

Mojang owns Minecraft. So, yes. Microsoft kind of owns Minecraft. That being said, Microsoft owning Mojang doesn't affect on how the game is being developed, Microsoft only supervises it's assets, and quite frankly, they will get their investment back really fast, since Minecraft sells quite well on all platforms. (Yes, Microsoft do get their share from console editions sells too, even though those editions are developed by 4J)
But what comes to the subject of the topic, I haven't even bothered to try the new launcher yet, because of it being on Beta stage, and. Well, I don't want to deal with it's bugs etc.

You may be right, Mojang is like a vice president where Microsoft is the President so if they wanted to kill off Minecraft; they could. I think that it could be compatible on older operating system but XP and Vista are no longer in their support cycle so they really aren't obligated to to tell Mojang to make it XP/Vista compatible. Windows 7 is about to be discontinued to security updates only. You need to be on Windows 10 and I think it is here to stay and Microsoft said it was the last OS their going to make and just make updates available to Windows 10. Everyone really needs to be on Windows 10 already. They make improvements based on user feedback which is great. They have already designed the start menu so your not clicking "All Apps" all the time. Windows 10 IS improving and there is no reason not to upgrade to it.

It indeed is last OS they're going to launch, as they (Microsoft) moved to same business model as Apple; As we all know, Apple doesn't release new OS's they're just updating/upgrading their old ones, and this is now what Microsoft is doing. As quite frankly, the system of releasing new OS every second or third year just don't cut it anymore. Vista in the end was considered to be kind of a flop of a OS, and even though Win 7 was basically the same, it was step forward, and I had it in my old laptop, and I loved it. I still would be using that laptop, if it wouldn't of broken down. Win 8.1 was good OS, even though it did have it's cons. Win 10. I don't really like it as much as Win 8.1 or Win 7, but it does launch way faster, than either one of previous Windows OS's I have used. Only problem is, that you can't update from older OS's for free anymore, as it was free only for a year only. And it already expired.
Your concern is that with more and more W7+ launchers coming out and no new bundles that can handle Vista in the future, any launcher you could still get working would eventually become deprecated and impossible to find or use, right? I'm not entirely clear on this.

So I was working on this really cool resource pack a while ago, but bad progress nonwithstanding, I think I found something much better... I'm probably gonna never release another custom Minecraft map.Until we meet again...
Well, I'm also not much of a fan of the new launcher, but for other reasons. Although the launcher itself doesn't use Java it does download a Java runtime for usage with the Minecraft game. First (obvious) issue: why would I need 2 Java runtimes on my computer?
But the second, much more troublesome, reason why I intend to stay away from this launcher as far as possible is because it's using a massively outdated Java runtime. 1.8u51 (obsoleted, well over one year old) while we're currently on 1.8u112. I know this is a test setup and all, but that should be no excuse to provide outdated software, versions of which even the manufacturer (Oracle) clearly states that they should not be used for production.
The game runs a lot better on the older versions of Java, actually, and having everyone use the same version allows Mojang to get around certain bugs, such as the infamous "pixel format not accelerated" error. There's no point to updating except for security, which is already added in each update, and if that's really a big issue, then they should just have made the game in a more secure language.
I myself don't really care about the launcher because the Windows 10 Edition is compatible with my X360 wireless controller and the Java version is not. It also seems like they add new feature like add-ons to the win10/PE first. They are made in C++ and are much faster.
Over on lady agnes' page on twitter I read the following:
https://twitter.com/MansOlson/status/790926060611309568
So minecraft has a new launcher, which at first I was like... Oh ok that's cool.
Then I read the following information about the new launcher over on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/59b7m0/help_us_test_the_new_minecraft_launcher_check_the/
Now what this is saying is that anyone with windows 7+ can use the new launcher but anything younger will have to suffice with the old launcher (acting as though java launcher is bad or something)
