So I found accidentally while playing survival that there is a way to create client-side phantom lava. It doesn't flow or actually set you on fire, but it does slow you down and shows the fire animation (note that this doesn't damage you at all). It disappears when the world is reloaded.
I also found a temporary glitch with lava buckets where occasionally when holding down the right mouse button with a lava bucket in hand, you will place regular lava; however, until you perform the right-click action again, it will appear in your inventory as a filled lava bucket.
