When I first heard of this new feature in the snapshots, I thought it would be awesome. (I never use snapshots, by the way.) I didn't expect 1.10 to come out so soon but it was nice that it came so soon. So I've been playing it (always vanilla survival by the way) and I have to admit I'm tempted to turn it off. There have been a number of times when it almost made me die due to jumping at just the wrong time.
One time in the nether I had just found a nether fortress and was beginning to explore it. I was near the end of a pier and was working on a ramp to get down. I accidentally bumped the side of the block beside me while walking and it caused me to jump. Since I was in motion, when I came down, there was nothing underneath me so I fell around 15-20 blocks distance. Fortunately, it wasn't fatal, but it was the closest call I've had with it so far.
There have been a number of other near misses as well. But overall, I do like it, particularly when exploring or filling out a map. It makes walking up and down hills a lot easier.
It has it's uses, for example, crossing terrain like Plains or Desert. You're not having to mash your spacebar to get anywhere. But I see where your coming from with the Nether Fortress thing.
Its nice for survival except when exploring caves filled with lava or the nether as stated above but I use it for exploring the overworked and running across plains and biomes
I personally don't like it. I see why it would be in PE because of limited controls but it doesn't seem to have a lot of purpose on PC. It just doesn't work as well as I want it to, it can not activate fast enough when sprinting so it stops my sprint, or it does it too early and I don't make the jump, and it doesn't work moving backwards (or sideways AFAIK).

When mining or digging, there the problem that you keep jumping up any block you get close to. And you have to get close to mine and collect the block. So you keep accidentally jumping on top of the block you are trying to mine. Is this just me?
I turn it on and off, depending on what I'm doing.

I tried it and didn't like it. I don't mind spamming the space bar so I turned it off. I see why it's needed in Minecraft PE but in the Minecraft PC I find it more annoying than anything.
I honestly use autojump more than I expected. It's really convenient in this village I decided to move into. It spawned on a couple hills so even though I straightened out the paths real easy I still have to jump a lot. With autojump I can get to the upper and lower part of my village easily. This is quickly becoming a necessity as it becomes clear I'll have to make my tree farm near the lower part of my village. To sum it all up, I'm neutral on the matter.
I think auto-jump is just for people that can't mash the spacebar, or have difficulty pressing it, or aren't used to jumping or whatever. But for me personally, I have become so used to it that I can pretty much press the spacebar to get a perfectly timed jump without even thinking about. So for me, after checking it out in the snapshots and trying to break it, I just turned it off instantly. Since I can basically run up a mountain without even thinking about it, it just got really annoying.
I noticed that when using it to jump up steep inclines (1 block forward, 1 up, repeat), that it almost never got the timing right, and I'd always either double jump or have to wait after jumping.
Pressing spacebar, however, I can almost always get it right.

I started playing Minecraft with my dad recently. He's never played a PC game before, and the autojump feature was incredibly useful for him! I turned it off, although I think it's a good feature to have toggle-able.
I had been playing the last two days in PE and came back to the PC version last night and started a new world in 1.10. And I'd gotten so used to auto-jumping in PE that I didn't even really notice it was different until I saw this post. SO yes, I like the option to have auto-jumping in the PC version too. Saves my space bar. (but its a good thing I learned how to backup on the PC using "s" i(I think? I'm not usually looking at the keyboard) nstead of turning around, running away, then running back as I was doing before. That makes it easier too when it doesn't trigger a auto-jump when it should.)
ETA: I should note my new World had an Extreme Hills biome right next to my starting area. And the Birch Forest biome to one end had a lot of steepish hills too)
To me it makes more sense to not have to press space all the time to go up small inclines, especially when games like Terraria let you go up blocks in normal walking, so I like it for that.
In my experience it doesn't have as many problems as people are claiming.

Meh, I never like autojump in any games, although I can see it being useful with climbing a big hill or something.

it obviously has uses for some people, but for me, after playing this game for whoever knows how much years, id rather play the way im already used to

I'm not going to use it since hitting spacebar is so ingrained in my instinct that I'd still push it anyway.
But, I can see it's uses for easing someone coming from PE or W10 edition into this version, as I do rely on it very heavily when I play PE.
Also, it's not mandatory and you can turn it off if you like, so I see absolutely no reason to remove it.

So basically, I'm stupid.
Adding on to what 109AN said, yeah, timing.

Auto-jump bad, spacebar good. Trying to navigate a crevasse or the nether will get you in hot lava quick.

Honestly, my experience so far is meh. I feel like the feature was made for PE and so I keep it off on PC.
I had been playing the last two days in PE and came back to the PC version last night and started a new world in 1.10. I'm making the player use AutoJump for my Mario Kart map so they don't have to press space to get past 1 block jumps.
Personally I don't like it, but a toggle is fine. I just think it should start off instead of on.
It makes you run up stairs faster than if it were to be turned off.
