Don't they still machine-gun you at close range though? By all means, if they removed that, skeletons would be perfectly balanced at this stage. I always hated the machine-gunning because it just chews through your durability more than anything short of feesh apocalypse.
It sounds like I'd be sprinting up, blocking the arrow, the skeleton runs away since I'm slowed while blocking, run back up to him, block again, repeat until my shield breaks, dealing no damage to the actual skeleton.
Then again, now we can yank skeletons towards us with an off-hand fishing pole then stab them to death. I'll have to see this sort of thing firsthand.
The machine gunning mechanic was removed, they always fire at the same speed now. It was probably removed since their strafing is a much better and less artificial way of making them harder to melee.
I personally love the new skeletons, I feel like mobs should be somthing you fear not run into a crowd of cause you need some arrows to test your new bow...
Too OP? Using standard gear (Full Iron, Diamond Sword, Bow and Arrows, Bacon/Steak) I managed to take out 5 from afar and 4 up close before a lucky shot from one one sent me hurtling over a cliff to my doom. Using substandard gear, I died pretty quickly, but using substandard gear in a combat scenario is unadvisable.

The skeletons were made harder probably, but definitely not OP. Although the shields do counter the skeletons, the new strafing means that it is impossible to just tank with mouse2 and a shield, walking while blocking is slower than sneaking. The new changes also have nothing to do with long-range bow combat, which is how you should be taking out skeletons if you are past the early game.
Not sure if this is related, but I've been running into this problem while beta-testing my mini-CTM map. Skeletons are too fast to kill efficiently with a stone sword, which is the highest the player has in the starter area.
This wouldn't be a problem if I could control where the skeletons spawn. However, they are naturally spawning which poses a problem.
As with all natural spawns, it is possible to control their density using honeypots, or underground alternative spawning grounds. For survival players, this may be difficult and time consuming, but it'll be worth it.
Want a skeleton in which is almost impossible to kill with a sword? Give a stray a max punch bow, the knock back and slowness should do the rest for you.
Yes. Night was supposed to be terribly difficult to survive. You have to have a shield and sword, and food, and good fighting skills in order to survive the night.
Arrows are craftable, and you do not need bone meal. It's just a bonus to help garden faster. Make a bed and torch out your caves, that way you'll encounter less skeletons
I think that a good way to OP skeletons is to just stand close to them with your shield up. their arrows bounce off and hit them while you literally do nothing.
I think that the new buffs are a great thing for minecraft combat, I got so tired of click spamming and cutting through hordes of zombies during the endgame, but with this new patch combat makes you time you hits, blocks, and crits. you have to manage your health and pick mobs that are more threatening to you quickly. The combat update got me back into the game.
wow it is op.. xD... I experience it once on my android ver. lattest pocket edition but they have no armor riding in the horse..?.. maybe it is hard mode?..
The game is insanely easy even on hard mode, so any additional difficulty the game gets is good. In all of my hardcore challenges I've only ever died in the Nether and only to complete flukes.

Why do I do this? What is life? Why are we here?

So many mods, so little time.
