So obviously by now everyone knows the new Elytra. The new item being introduced will allow us to glide in minecraft which at first is really cool. Believe me, I was also ecstatic about them. But now that I've had the chance to mess around with them a bit I have to say they aren't really all that great. Sure its gliding in minecraft, but there really is no practical use for them at all. The Elytra just serve as a neat gimmick item which I honestly can't say is worth the effort it takes to get them.
I mean, gliding is gliding. You will hit the ground eventually no matter what you do. So with no real way to gain altitude DURING flight they don't really pose as a great means for travel. Sure you can build a tower but in the time it takes for that you may also build a rail cart system (Or have already done so since the Elytra is the most end-game thing I can think of). For PVP they're not that practical because without a quick way to lift off and/or stay in the air you'll just have to land and be open to attack. In air combat is either not very precise with bows or expensive with splash potions, so you'd be doing yourself more harm than good.
Custom maps should NOT be a consideration. Custom maps can use anything they want; command blocks, NBT edited items, custom potion effects, so the Elytra can't be justified with them. Yes they open up new custom map ideas, but so does EVERY change in minecraft. The item cannot be built around custom maps. At the same time, Creative mode has the same benefits, including just spawning in an Elytra whenever you want, and flying up normally to gain height.
For an item that you have to beat the ender dragon for, enter a new expanded form of the end dimension, find an end city with an airship, get to the top and into the airship, then actually get the item, the Elytra is a whole lot of effort for something that has zero practicality in the actual game. Like I said earlier, it's just gimmicky. I appreciate Mojang adding it into survival because there is nothing that irritates me more than creative-only items, and I also like the idea behind the item, but I just don't see any use for it given what it does and how difficult it is to obtain.
(TL;DR) Elytra isn't worth the effort needed to get it in survival.
Of course that could be just me. If anyone has any good ideas (that don't involve custom maps for sake) about how we can use the Elytra please share them.
IS SO WORTH THE EFFORT! you get to fly! who doesnt want to do that! technically in real life you cant gain altitude on a plane without the motor running! in other terms, you cant gain altitude without losing speed. its like newtons law. two thing at different weight will drop at the same time. anyways, there is talk that you will be able to customize your elytra. and plus, defeating the ender dragon is easy, if you have the right gear! so dont complain about this amazing feature being added to minecraft, if you dont want to go get it and look awesome, then dont! its that simple. if you dont like it, then just try to forget its even a thing. what im saying is: just dont complain about something that you dont HAVE to do.
and yes, i do have an idea
here it is: ENJOY IT!
i hope this helped you learn how to not complain about crap that you cant change!
There are ways to gain altitude. I'm sure some may be fixed by devs over time, but for now several methods. Check Docm77's launcher using the mob collision mechanic:

I'm sorry but I have to say that you can't just say this. They may be saying this but it is a legitimate concern that the Elytra may not be useful. It is an opinion. I may like using the Elytras but sometimes they are not practical. You sound like you are bashing people who do not agree with every feature.

-You get to GLIDE. Not fly. There is a difference. Planes fly because they can sustain their own altitude. Gliding requires external lift (starting from a high point)
-That isn't newton's law. What?
-It doesn't matter how pretty the Elytra looks if it's never useful enough to actually see it.
-I'll give you this one, I said it was difficult obtaining the Elytra. What I meant was the substancial amount of effort over what you traditionally need to do, which is just craft items. This requires you to beat the ender dragon (not really difficult just a step in the process), scavenge the new end biome for a specific landmark, make it to the top, and then you receive the item. The effort is definitely larger than simply crafting.
(I do want to note I DO NOT think the Elytra should be craftable)
-You did not actually present any objective or subjective arguments for or against the item. You only blindingly defended it for a reason you did not allow us to comprehend by not expressing them.

I did notice this video before, and it will be something I'd have to implement into my world to make the Elytra practical for me. Though really a tower upwards provides the same function wise, and this is just stylistic. (I do love making things look nice though!) My concern is that you need some way to gain altitude while still flying, not requiring landing, to really make use of the Elytra. There was a method of boosting height via nose diving and pulling back up but that was recently patched.
Name all of newtons laws for me please. see if you know them all. what i meant was its just common physics. everyone whos over at least 13 should know that simple rule. plus, i have a flying license so im pretty sure i know how a plain works no offense, just dont hate.

These are my thoughts exactly. I was not really intending to hate on the Elytra and I'm glad it didn't come out that way for everyone. In truth I do enjoy using it, I just feel that it lacks practicality. Its a fun item to use but it won't live for very long I'm afraid, with its current functionality.

i know, people will soon forget about it and never really use it. and then once generations beneath us say: "Whats an elytra grandpa? is it a mob?"
its just to bad because im seeing more people hating it then liking it...
theres nothing i can do about it, im just not that high up on the gaming chain to be able to get people to like it sniffle

I think I get what you mean by stylistic, however I feel you're selling it short. I think it has a lot more to offer versus a tower, building it isn't anymore effort and you don't have to actually spend time climbing the tower to use it. You could have a line of these spaced every 1000-1500 blocks and travel very quickly.
Judging based on the fact that one can do quite a few "useless" things with them. They tend to be
mid to end game depending if you plan to beat the wither. They are great for exploring caverns and
the nether. Beyond that, having these strapped to your back 24/7 is a bit pointless. Now, if I want to go
jump off a mountain or do some jungle par cor then I have these to aid me. Or cross a ravine perhaps.
For the basic concept, it is just a fun way to get around. Not every single item needs to be better than
all the rest. You may not gain any extra momentum but a minecart can't see you through the sky.
Instead of building a one way track, I can steer and determine where I want to land.
That is true, I will give you that. They are very entertaining for a way to get around, despite not being a very practical method. My intentions were not to say it is not fun. My concern is actually that because they do not have much practicality, the method you have to go through to obtain them is overkill for what they actually present to a player. Killing one of the few bosses in the game, exploring a whole new biome for one tower with an airship near it, and climbing up that dangerous tower all seems like too much for one item that only serves as a little bit of fun.
Again though, I do like the item itself, I just wish the Elytra had a bit more practicality to go with it given what needs to be done to actually get one in the first place.

Very true, a sort of flight junction network spread across a world could make the Elytra very handy for travel. I would hope you can get them to go over just 1500 blocks but thats just me.
im sorry if i offended you, i did not intend to. but i am just saying, dont use it if you dont like it.
It's ok. I may have misunterpreted it a little bit. I like the elytras too, but I think it would be cool if you could create launchers like the one in the video for transportation between areas (from my tests from block 256 the Elytras can travel 1800 blocks at least)
Personally, I think it's more of just a fun little addition to the game that doesn't necessarily need to add function. Like fireworks. They're so much fun to create, and even more fun to light off. But they serve almost no purpose in the game, besides letting other people know where you're at, or as a possible beacon system of sorts. The same goes for building things that look nice. Aesthetics are by no means necessary in the game, and provide literally no function whatsoever, aside from being easy on the eyes. But many people still choose to make their builds look nice, not for function, but just because no one likes an ugly building. So elytra aren't exactly how some may have pictured them, and they're far from perfect, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy them just because they're fun. It adds variety and a wonderful new way to "fall with style".
And 1800 blocks?! Really? That's much further than I though they would be able to glide. In all honesty, I thought they would have nerfed them far beyond what they have already. But I'm definitely not complaining

Servers, custom maps, etc, should not be a consideration. But in this case, I think Mojang was considering these things when adding the Elytra. I don't agree with it, but since we now have wings as a result, I'm not complaining. =)
