So you can only see vanilla servers being effected by non-optional unconfigurable armour mechanics? I don't know about you, but unless someone creates a plugin that somehow overrides the 1.9 armour mechanics with 1.8 mechanics, it's going to effect every server that has PvP or PvE in it. And since it adds the fact you can die in 1 shot from a creeper in diamond armour, it's probably not going to go down well in most cases.
Did you not read my post? I said plugin devs will likely create plugins to modify this, 1.9 will not affect servers unless they choose to let it do so.

From what I understand of plugins used in Minecraft, they can't change the code like mods can. So unless you can make a plugin that somehow overrides the new code, the 1.9 mechanics will still be on servers regardless. (Like how you can't make a plugin that turns poppies into roses for example)

Good point. But from what I understand (which isn't much) wouldn't you be able to modify cooldowns, damage, armor point, etc? The hit timers would be null, effectively reviving spamclicking.

Yes, all of those are modifiable using in-game mechanics as well as plugins, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. There is currently no way to modify the 4% down to 3.3% protection rating for armour, (you could tweak the armour point amounts a bit, but mix-matching armour sets might be a problem) and there is no way to weaken or remove the armour penetration mechanics. (more damage = less armour protection, 13.5 hearts can kill someone in diamond armour.) Servers are stuck with those mechanics unless a plugin can somehow override them.
Regardless, this is getting off topic from the OP.
I don't stick to Survival only, for what it's worth. But I've never seen Mojang care about servers at all. (don't quote me on this though, feel free to correct me) Correct me if I'm wrong, but Servers hire plugin devs, yes? plugin devs create plugins to modify the servers, I don't see how 1.9 will change this. It's not like Minecraft is being re-written in C++ or anything, it's a combat update that nerfs some overpowered aspects of Minecraft, such as the Enchanted Golden Apples and armor. I can only see Vanilla Servers being affected by this.
If so many servers need devs to change this, doesn't that mean it's a bad mechanic? I've already explained, if Mojang makes an update, and many servers get plugins to reverse the update, then the update is most likely bad towards too many players and thus was unsuccessful.

Anyways, I don't like/dislike the nerf, because I don't see a need for notch apples (in survival). Remember, they can still be found, and they can be put into chests with a command (or plugins for servers). Therefor, it doesn't change much.

But Design-Wise, Enchanted Golden Apples were game breaking, and the combat system was near-broken. By this logic, an update featuring an airstrike that gets a lot of support would be a "good mechanic"
Now what will we use our stores of gold on? I'm sure it would be awesome to remove the main way people use gold, other than glistering melons and worthless armors/tools.

Gold is a nice decoration, and glistering melons are used for brewing. You can still craft regular Golden Apples, and Clocks are very useful for mining. Believe me, Gold still has plenty of uses.

One primary difference: Airstrikes were never in the game.

I was using Airstrikes to make a point. A Game with OP Powerups and a broken combat system is a bad game. Fixing these makes it a good, arguably great game.

4 gold to make a clock is all you need, doesn't take much to make glistering melons, golden carrots are an okay option but that is easily replaceable with a pumpkin, sugarcane and egg farm for pumpkin pie.
I guess it won't be that much of a difference since PvP servers will probably invent a plugin for OP Gapples.

Exactly. I do agree here, while gold has quite a few uses, we really need items that take a lot of gold. I can only have so many golden shrines.
I personally like gapple pvp, but I think this is really gonna add a new element to survival pvp. I kinda like the idea of having to go work for gapples again even if they don't have the same kind of effects as they used to. I am interested to know what the purpose of Ocean Temples will be though, because getting 8 gold blocks wont mean much of anything.

Something that expensive kinda balances out its OPness isn't it? Besides its just invincibility for 30 seconds, then it just makes your harder to kill after regen dissipates.

Although this change has its benefits, I really don't see the need for it. The enchanted apple is already nerfed so that it no longer means invincibility, so why do they need to be harder to obtain? (Assuming this actually makes them harder to obtain, although this may not be the case.) The main good thing I see about this change is that it means you can no longer farm OP apples until you have loads of them.
Also, even though gold has it uses, it already isn't really the most valuable material in Minecraft. There is golden melons/carrots, but a large deposit (8+ gold ores) is enough to make 27 potions, which is probably more than you'll need. The only useful things that require mass amounts of gold (thus requiring actively looking for, or farming it) are powered rails, golden apples, and enchanted golden apples. Gold blocks, tools, sword, and armor, are mostly just for aesthetics, with the possible exception being tools, since they mine so fast. Granted, a lot of Minecraft is about aesthetics, but I still prefer things that have normal uses. If you remove the crafting of enchanted apples, then gold is even less useful than before.
Overall, I think it would be better to make the apples craftable, but still nerfed, and maybe instead do something about gold farms.

Why would you eat pumpkin pie over golden carrots or steak, even prior to 1.9? Golden carrots give you less hunger but more saturation - as much as 3 pumpkin pies - and more than any other food in the game (granted, it is only 12.5% better than steak and restores less hunger but that is only relevant if you have lost more than 6 hunger points and many people eat just as they lose one even if that wastes some of the hunger value). Also, if you are down 7-8 hunger points you can eat two golden carrots but only one steak or pumpkin pie, giving you a much greater saturation advantage (20 vs 4.8 for pumpkin pie).
Saturation will be a leading factor in determining who wins a PvP match in 1.9 thanks to the crazy health regeneration it gives, and it will also be more important in PvE since for the same armor protection (damage after armor reduction) in 1.8 and 1.9 you can take damage 8 times faster in 1.9 for the same health lost after regeneration is factored in.
Looks like someone other than me likes the new hunger system!
I kind of like it too. Now the n00bs have a chance against the "mlg spam-clicking & block-hitting pros" which rely on their OP armor and infinite supply of Notch Apples just to win.
