Enchanted Golden Apples are different than normal Golden Apples. As this thread is about Enchanted Golden Apples instead of regular ones, I thought that people would be able to understand that when I say Golden Apple, I mean the version of the Golden Apple that this thread was created to talk about. Perhaps I was wrong, and I should go back and edit my post to reflect this?
Funny, my factual error goes to show how much Enchanted Golden Apples impact gameplay, eh? OT: I'm getting the idea that OP wants "Notch Apples" (really stupid name, BTW) back because he/she is scared of losing his/her high stats on a Factions Server or something like that. Mojang doesn't give a crap about multiplayer, they make updates for Singleplayer. Since Enchanted Golden Apples are near gamebreaking for PvE, nerfing them was the right call.
All these little pvper's who relied too heavily on Notch Apples are really raging this hard over the change? They've changed game features before. I'd say probably 95% of these pvper's didn't play minecraft in alpha when you could rapid fire bows.If a bunch of mobs came at you at once, all you had to do was hold right click and gun those fools down from a few blocks away. Same thing with any players. They had no way of getting close to you if you had a bow. It was op and had to be removed. Hence the drawback feature. This is another one of those changes. Gold has few uses other than decoration, much like 90% of the blocks in the game. Providing such an overpowered, game breaking feature from a resource that's easily farmed, and has no other practical use outside of powered rails was a terrible game feature. (And let's be honest, how often have you ever used a lot of gold on powered rails? You get plenty of rails from one set and you don't need to use the rails in a solid pattern, one every few blocks is fine in most situations.)
It seems that the minecraft community has become too pvp based, and forgot what this game was about. It was originally a creative game, with a survival aspect. Minecraft wasn't originally a game where you could make a house, set up farms, and afk for hours, craft a few overpowered items and just run into pvp for the rest of the time. Pvp has completely taken over the game, and it was relying on a terrible system for pvp. Spam clicking as fast as you can and hoping the opponents invincibility runs out before yours does is hardly skill. I'm not saying pvp should be removed, but I fully support the changes they've made. Adding penalties for attacking too quickly makes the game more challenging, and let's face it, it wasn't a challenge before. You have to plan your attacks now, and use your opponents weaknesses against them.
the statement above pertains to my other topic about how pvp ruins minecraft lol how about that?
In all honesty, I have a gold farm. Do you know how often I use it to craft the apples? One time. I usually just go for golden carrots. Much cheaper and they have better saturation than any other item in the game so no. Having a nice little reward in the way of notch or gold apples just for doing what I normally do in any world sounds great to me.
They weren't removed, they just were made uncraftable. You have a chance of finding a Notch Apple in a dungeon chest just like any other loot that spawns in there so stop complaining.
Pretty sure that the chances of finding a Notch Apple in a dungeon are lower than the chance of finding a normal golden apple (which got changed back to normal).
I wouldn't say pvp ruins minecraft per say, its the focus thats placed on it thats ruining the game. Right now, pvp is just a bunch of spam clicking and hoping your invincibility lasts slightly longer than your opponents. The changes seek to rebalance that, which is definitely an improvement, but the game is mainly a sandbox game, but few players actually build anything anymore.
So, why did Mojang even fix this a second time after they had already fixed it anyway? Why not fix some of the game-breaking problems that 1.9 introduced?
• Creepers can instantly kill players in the best armour possible.
• Bows with power 5 can instantly kill players in iron armour, or do 9.2 hearts to diamond armour. 3 shots can kill the best armour possible.
• Eating steak can out-heal poison effects.
• 2 players with stone/iron/diamond axes can kill someone with a diamond sword and diamond armour.
• A shield made from 6 wooden planks and 1 iron ingot is stronger then armour made from 24 diamonds.
But they had to nerf golden apples by making them uncraftable, even though they were nerfed to about 1/6th of their original power already. (1.8: 96 hearts regen and 2 hearts absorption (98) VS 1.9: 8 hearts regen and 8 hearts absorption (16))
I can tell you, removing armour penetration mechanics will fix 2 or even 3 of those game-breaking problems. More then removing a crafting recipe ever could.
I feel like a newbie for asking, but what's a Notch Apple?
The enchanted version of the Golden Apple that used to be created by surrounding a normal apple with gold blocks than ingots. It would give you insane health generation alongside other affects like resistance, practically making you invincible for intensive purposes.
It's called a Notch apple because that's the original infamous Golden Apple recipe Notch put into the game.

Thanks! To OP, these are ridiculously overpowered. Like, gamebreaking overpowered. Heck, I remember one guy in my Roleplay Realm managed to get one, and challenged me to a duel. He ate the "Notch Apple" and I was dead in no time flat. I'm sure "Notch Apples" are even more disastrous when fighting monsters.

To those who think that this will "destroy" pvp servers, they can just program a plugin that allows crafting of notch apples. Also, pvp servers can change the armor protection by making their own damage systems, it is possible because I have done it before.
This is a really bad update. I like things that are sustainable, not being able to craft them is certainly not sustainable for people who don't mod or cheat.. I hope they change it back or at least give a new recipe for them. Obviously this fix probably wouldn't change PVP for most people because public servers that you would PVP on will still probably have plugins with shops where you can buy them, or kits that give them. This change will mostly just effect single player worlds and vanilla servers.

Exactly. Once when I battled a friend we were told we could choose a weapon of choice. I chose the notch apple and was given a wooden sword, while fought by him with a diamond sword/leather armor, and still won three times over. Because he respawned and hilariously kept at me with no succcess. May I mention his sword had sharpness V and fire aspect II AND knockback? Yeah, this really happened. XD
Point being, they are like exhaustible invincibility; whoever has the most wins no matter what.

Well, the problem with the sustainability which golden apples had was they were too OP. If you make a successful farm, they can be horded and eaten en masse so the people with the farms were OP. I get they are supposed to be OP, but they were beyond OP; they were broken. Now they are obtainable for everyone at a modest rate, encourage exploration, more fair, etc.
You don't need a gamerule. On a faction server, get a recipe plugin for them. On a vanilla or realms server, have someone write a vanilla command block mod. Those work for recipes too.

Dated terminology for a golden apple which looks enchanted and is better at everything but WAY harder to get.

Actually the real reason it's known as a Notch Apple is because back when Notch used to play Minecraft on servers if you killed him he dropped one.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Does Notch still play servers, and is this still a thing?

normal golden apples are still craftable!

So I should craft my notch apples before they're removed in 1.9 if I have the materials?
No, they honestly aren't worth it. Potions are cheaper.
