Oh sorry, I didn't realise being 100% invincible and overpowered with a mass craft able item (gold farms) was "fun".
I always thought the best part of minecraft was the challenge.
I have a solution if ion if you are going to be sad about not getting your vanilla invincibility..
Go into creative mode. It's called "survival" for a reason. Not "invincibility" mode
Eating an enchanted golden apple is no longer "100% invincibility". You can heal more from a potion of regeneration II (0:22) and a steak.
The steak will give you 12 health in 6 seconds from saturation, an extra 2 health over 8 seconds to eat again, and an extra 2 health over 8 seconds to not heal anymore. Total: 16 over 22 seconds.
The regeneration potion heals you 1 health every 1.25 seconds for 22 seconds. That's 17 health over 21.25 seconds. (the last 0.75 seconds doesn't count)
A grand total of 33 health over 22 seconds.
Enchanted golden apples (in 1.9) give you 9 health over 4.5 seconds from saturation, and the same extra health as steak. (4 health over 16 seconds)
Total: 13 health over 20.5 seconds
Enchanted golden apple regeneration buff (in 1.9, it's level 2 instead of 5 and lasts 20 seconds instead of 30) heals you 1 health every 1.25 seconds for 20 seconds. 16 health over 20 seconds.
A grand total of 29 health over 20.5 seconds.
If we bring the golden apple's healing up to 22 for the sake of comparison, it only heals 31.1 health over 22 seconds. Still less health then more common and easily renewable items.
Extended fire resistance potions also give 8 minutes, enchanted golden apples only give 5.
The only real benefits of enchanted golden apples now is resistance I, which makes you last roughly 25% longer, and the 8 absorption hearts, which are useless if the time runs out before you take damage.
If they really wanted to take away the OP effects, why not just make steak/porkchops, regeneration potions and fire resistance potions uncraftable? Wait, no. I didn't mean that! No! Nooooooo...!
Snapshot 15w45a Update: (Not the real update)
• Magma Cubes no longer drop magma cream.
• Magma cream is no longer craftable.
• Ghasts no longer drop ghast tears.
• Cows no longer drop raw beef or steak when killed while on fire.
• Pigs no longer drop raw porkchops or cooked porkchops when killed while on fire.
• Magma cream, Ghast Tears, Raw Beef and Raw Porkchops are now found in dungeon chests.
They should make it so that priest villagers will give you them as trades.
I've thought about this, and no they shouldn't.
If you could get these by selling crops for emeralds then buying the apples for emeralds it would make basic crop farms ridiculously powerful since all you need to farm is dirt and water. At least pigmen could fight back and can't be bonemealed.
And that's when I stopped taking you seriously. Do you know nothing of game design? Overpowered items are game-breaking, and that's the last thing we need in Minecraft right now.
this is not a competitive game, this is a sandbox, having op items is not game breaking on a sandbox, they can be game breaking in certain pvp aspects of that sandbox, the right thing to do is ban these op items for that mode, with commands and things like that. the rest of the world can have them
A sandbox yes, but with competitive aspects . Just curious, why can they be game breaking in PvP aspects? And having servers ban these items is most definitely NOT a solution.
If you've been playing minecraft since the beginning like me, then you would understand the feeling that minecraft is drifting further and further away from what it originally was. Which was awesome. That aside- Mojang, what are you doing? Make Notch apples craftable again. Are you just looking for things to add to annoy people in the community?
Sounds like old is gold to me. I swear, if I hear alpha/beta versions were better ONE more time.....
(#antimisplacednostolgia)
The funny thing is that the craftable 'notch apple' wasn't added until 1.3 of full release. Prior to that it was one of the rarest loot items you could find in a dungeon chest. I think I have only ever found 3 in my time playing and have never ate one at all. I kept them as a trophy because they were so rare.
I like that it sounds like they are going back to making them loot only, but more common on the new loot table system. Something that powerful shouldn't be so readily available.
if the sword is hard to obtain... also, is your choice if you want to use that sword, is also your choice if you want to craft the apple, choice is the point here, making the apple uncraftable removes the choice, having the apple craftable and having it on dungeons is better than having only on dungeons, it gives the players the choice.
if you think that is too op then dont use it, is as simple as that. as for pvp maps, there are commandblocks that can help with that, also plugins and more things, that is not an issue.
It is not your choice if someone else in your world gets said item and obliterates the world. So yeah, you can't really control who uses it. Plugins dont count. (Realms exists people)
i can summon a wither at someone elses base and run away with ender pearls, it would never target me.
Now you are moving out of the realm of logic here. It's easy enough to escape a Wither, even without Ender Pearls. One could dig down, run through a herd of animals to distract it, etc. Fighting the Wither is another matter, but escaping it is easy. Thus, because of the Wither's AI, it could be considered"balanced" Enchanted Golden Apples, on the other hand, are not balanced.
While the argument can be made that enchanted golden apples aren't as powerful as a full buff kit, they do have the advantage of providing all of those buffs from a single item. They're stackable, and can be eaten while the effects are still active, allowing you to perpetuate the effects so long as you have any remaining. From this we can see that enchanted golden apples are very powerful items indeed.
To add to this, prior to this update, they were very easy to obtain. Run around for a while in the Nether, go cave diving long enough, or even set up a large gold farm in either the Overworld or Nether, and you'll have enough gold to craft one in short order. Obviously, this means that automating the production of golden apples was quite the valuable asset.
From this, we find that a very powerful item was easily obtained through little to no effort, and could be produced by going AFK in front of a gold farm. Therefore, the need for change arises.
Firstly, many recent changes have been done to make the game more difficult. Armor nerfs, damage nerfs, mob AI updates, etc. All of these have been done to make it more difficult to survive, and add a bit of challenge to the main staple of the game: survival SSP and SMP. It can therefore be universally agreed that this change is in-line with that concept. Removing the ability to craft these powerful items has indeed made the game more difficult. If you want to have that kind of power, you have to either occupy numerous inventory slots and spend materials from numerous different sources, or go out searching for a rare loot item.
Secondly, multiple Mojang devs have said in the past that they want to get Minecraft away from being a grindfest filled with AFK farms. And having enchanted golden apples as craftable items contributed to both of those problems. Being very powerful items, it encouraged people to grind heavily for them. And being made of gold, it was quite simple to farm for them. People all over were creating Pigman farms to harvest gold nuggets and make these apples, which is exactly the kind of thing Mojang wanted to eliminate. That's why they changed the enchanting system, why they changed Villager mechanics, and why they removed the enchanted golden apple recipe. Because above all, they want people to actually play the game. Having to search for these items by rooting out dungeons and temples? That fits decently into that concept.
And lastly, for the longest time, Minecraft has had a serious dearth of good loot in the game. In almost all cases, anything you could get from going out and searching could be replaced or created through various AFK farms. With 1.8 and 1.9, they've changed that. Elytra were a part of this, the ocean monument was a part of this, and now, enchanted golden apples are a part of this. They're starting to create interesting loot for us to find. And you have to admit, finding an uncraftable consumable that gives you four different buffs is pretty interesting.
All things considered, this change is very much in line with other changes they've made. The only complaint people seem to have so far is that they've removed the ability to craft something that you used to be able to craft. Removing a feature isn't always a bad thing, and can contribute to the long-term health of the game environment. If you look past the narrow globe of self-interest that people tend to project when looking at these changes, you can see that this will only do good for the game in coming years.

Even a thread author can go off topic simply by deviating too far from the original topic of the thread. We generally frown upon thread authors dramatically changing a thread topic long after it has been created, since it causes confusion when people look back at the earlier conversations.
It's a survival sandbox.
"let's just add in a sword that insta-kills any mob by just lokking at them! and don't worry, Minecraft is a sandbox, so it doesn't matter if it's OP!"
Exactly. The reason they did this was because by removing the apples from most servers, it would balance things out. Even with the new anti-spam-clicking meter, god apples would still blow away the opposition. And, if one person could obtain one god apple the new way, it's a way of rewarding someone for spending actual time to look for one and for actually caring.
Basically, yes, it was a great idea to remove crafting them. Not to mention there's still lesser golden apples.......
Guys, seriously. Enchanted Golden Apples are extremely changed from 1.8. Instead of giving 30-second invulnerability, they give you slightly less than double health for 2 minutes, which is a huge nerf in itself. They also remain the only portable source of Resistance, which I think needs to be obtainable via other means than dumb luck. Perhaps it could be made a little harder to obtain on an established server, like through villager trading or something, at the price of the new rare enchantments, but it certainly doesn't need to be uncraftable.

Enchanted Golden Apples are different than normal Golden Apples. As this thread is about Enchanted Golden Apples instead of regular ones, I thought that people would be able to understand that when I say Golden Apple, I mean the version of the Golden Apple that this thread was created to talk about. Perhaps I was wrong, and I should go back and edit my post to reflect this?

Funny, my factual error goes to show how much Enchanted Golden Apples impact gameplay, eh? OT: I'm getting the idea that OP wants "Notch Apples" (really stupid name, BTW) back because he/she is scared of losing his/her high stats on a Factions Server or something like that. Mojang doesn't give a crap about multiplayer, they make updates for Singleplayer. Since Enchanted Golden Apples are near gamebreaking for PvE, nerfing them was the right call.
All these little pvper's who relied too heavily on Notch Apples are really raging this hard over the change? They've changed game features before. I'd say probably 95% of these pvper's didn't play minecraft in alpha when you could rapid fire bows.If a bunch of mobs came at you at once, all you had to do was hold right click and gun those fools down from a few blocks away. Same thing with any players. They had no way of getting close to you if you had a bow. It was op and had to be removed. Hence the drawback feature. This is another one of those changes. Gold has few uses other than decoration, much like 90% of the blocks in the game. Providing such an overpowered, game breaking feature from a resource that's easily farmed, and has no other practical use outside of powered rails was a terrible game feature. (And let's be honest, how often have you ever used a lot of gold on powered rails? You get plenty of rails from one set and you don't need to use the rails in a solid pattern, one every few blocks is fine in most situations.)
It seems that the minecraft community has become too pvp based, and forgot what this game was about. It was originally a creative game, with a survival aspect. Minecraft wasn't originally a game where you could make a house, set up farms, and afk for hours, craft a few overpowered items and just run into pvp for the rest of the time. Pvp has completely taken over the game, and it was relying on a terrible system for pvp. Spam clicking as fast as you can and hoping the opponents invincibility runs out before yours does is hardly skill. I'm not saying pvp should be removed, but I fully support the changes they've made. Adding penalties for attacking too quickly makes the game more challenging, and let's face it, it wasn't a challenge before. You have to plan your attacks now, and use your opponents weaknesses against them.
the statement above pertains to my other topic about how pvp ruins minecraft lol how about that?
In all honesty, I have a gold farm. Do you know how often I use it to craft the apples? One time. I usually just go for golden carrots. Much cheaper and they have better saturation than any other item in the game so no. Having a nice little reward in the way of notch or gold apples just for doing what I normally do in any world sounds great to me.
They weren't removed, they just were made uncraftable. You have a chance of finding a Notch Apple in a dungeon chest just like any other loot that spawns in there so stop complaining.
Pretty sure that the chances of finding a Notch Apple in a dungeon are lower than the chance of finding a normal golden apple (which got changed back to normal).
I wouldn't say pvp ruins minecraft per say, its the focus thats placed on it thats ruining the game. Right now, pvp is just a bunch of spam clicking and hoping your invincibility lasts slightly longer than your opponents. The changes seek to rebalance that, which is definitely an improvement, but the game is mainly a sandbox game, but few players actually build anything anymore.
