The only overworld mob that gives me issues is the Skeleton, but that's because of the arrows and nothing to do with the new mechanics: I still kill them fairly quickly once I've closed the distance.
Wait...aren't they totally useless as long as you have a shield? o_O
(well, unless there are other mobs attacking you at the same time)
First, they were complaining about Mojang taking so long to start releasing snapshots. Now once the snapshots are finally here, people are complaining about the changes in those snapshots. Jesus people make up your minds.
Anyways, i personally haven't tested out the combat mechanics yet as i do not have enough free time. First chance i get i will test it out. But i can say this, i personally prefer anything over the current method where the thing which mostly determines who will come out as the winner is how fast you can spam LMB.
We are so accustomed to spam-clicking, that 1.9 would be such a huge change. I personally don't like it because I PVP a lot on multiple servers, and so do many others. It requires skill to spam-click, and players would then have to slowly click so they can deal a mass amount of damage to others. Currently, many players aren't complaining to much about spam-clicking in 1.8, but these snapshots have caused many players to create rumors about the future 1.9. If you are play some sort of map which includes constant mob spawning, you would slowly have to pick the spawning mob off with your sword, which could cause the player to die a lot easier.
Did you see the balance of mobs? when you hit the mob, there is a good chance he's about 1-2 secs static.
It might be hard to adjust too at first, but we needed the nerf for spam clicking. It is incredibly annoying, especially on those servers where they give overpowered items to the highest ranks. It's just like when they added horses. Many people were suggesting/requesting it, but when they added it, it was met with hatred and rejection. I personally don't think that 1.9 has much to offer. Pur pur blocks, sulkers, and some combat stuff. Eh... I'm sure it will still be good though. I made the same assumption about 1.8, ant it turned out okay (not as good as 1.7 though). I think the updates started to go down quality wise since 1.6. I miss 1.5 and 1.4.
Yes, it is very irritating spamclick but not to complaining that it affect me, but it's the only way to win in PvP.
As I have already seen many people say, People don't like the change but I want to say it again, the new update I feel will take more strategy and quick thinking than just running up to someone and just overwhelming them with a million hits in a second (I know I'm exaggerating).what I'm trying to say is that mojang is making combat a lot more in depth, and I hope people understand that and don't complain about it.
You said it all, they need to understand that way.
Wel, I can understand why not everyone is overjoyed about this update. Because it changes a quite important mechanism quite drastically. For years, from alpha till now, we had to deal with the current mechanisms and a lot of players have become (very) experienced in them.
For PvP'ers, but also for PvE'ers, the current combat was just a part of Minecraft as the redstone. Adventure maps with monsters are also build around it. So now that is going to change, it is not strange that many players are not really pleased by that. I mean, not everyone was asking for change.
Imaging that Mojang would change and nerf redstone in such a way as she is now doing with the combat. I think that a lot of redstoners would also not be that pleased, when they suddenly, for example, need more repeaters, or can't walk over activated redstone without being hurt.
Or imaging that Mojang would change and nerf the water mechanics. Even the slightest change can break many contraptions and maps. Even something simple as water letting pass through signs and open doors would cause huge changes in the game.
So even very good improvements can become an annoyance if they break quite heavily your gameplay. Or the way you have set up your adventure maps. You must then get used to the new mechanics, in the hope that they will not change again so much in the future. And with this combat update, getting used means propably also a lot of dying.
What did you say makes sense, but does not think it being a big change, will bring new and better ways and possibilities?
The community is so used to spam-clicking that those snapshots now seem like a huge change for the worse.
And I personally dont like it,because it slows the PvP and it makes it kinda boring (you hit,he hits you back, you hit again...)Mostly because the cooldown timer,on the weapons
Another thing I dont like is the fact that shovel and axe do more damage than swords!?!
But again, those are only snapshots,so everything is a subject to change,as Mojangs likes to hear some feedback
BTW,maybe only thing I really like are those new command blocks they added
My first forum post,so Hello everyone <3
1. The Combat will no longer be boring, but more strategic, that is, we have to think more anter to fight, and that's good.
2 - Even the sword with less damage than the shovel and ax it remains the best weapon because the shovel and the ax are items more "heavy" so it has a greater damage and lower cooldown, as the sword is an item "medium" so its damage and its cooldown is at that level
Looks like a ton of people think that is only an update for PvP, while it's not. It also will be for PvE. Really, people, before complaining check the snapshot and try to get used. Those who say "OH DAM ZOMBIES HORDE WILL KIL ME NOW AND I WIL BE DED, THIS UPDATE RUINED MC, NOOOOO", did you even know that there's a new defensive attack, that if you're standing or moving slowly, will knock back all enemies around you.
Seriously, I hate when those things happen because people don't even check.
So yeah, I've been doing Survival mode with the new combat mechanics, and I have to say I've adjusted to them perfectly well.
The only overworld mob that gives me issues is the Skeleton, but that's because of the arrows and nothing to do with the new mechanics: I still kill them fairly quickly once I've closed the distance.
Then again, against most mobs, my combat style already heavily involved controlling the distance between me and them to keep outside their attack range while keeping them inside my attack range.
The new sword attack is pretty nice for dealing with multiple enemies at once.
And besides, regular zombies are incredibly slow. Lure them into water, and they practically can't move, making them easy pickin'.
Haven't gotten to the Nether yet on this playthrough though. I probably will still handle the zombie pigmen in a way that keeps them from swarming me.
That's what people should do, open Minecraft, and play the snapshot and then say something.
Well, many many players on Minecraft are younger kids that liked it's 'spam to win' combat system. Now that it's gone, they are not very happy.
Personally, I like the current system. That means I'll actually could have other ways to win instead of being the first one to hit the opponent.
That's the thing. 50% of all Minecraft players are kids 8-9 and under. They enjoy it because it's not about advanced combat. It's about building and expansion, being creative, and doing whatever in a huge and emense world. I'm just saying, let's be honest, if no one had said a thing how many of you would evan care about spam clicking what so ever.
I like though that it's more strategic. Minecraft is NOT ruined like some people make it out to be.
Look I understand the Pvp's are happy and I know people have been wanting things more complicated. But at the same time you need to understand that Minecraft is at its core simple. Look at it this way the crit mechanics in the game have always been questionable for many. Basically your making combat revolve entirely around jumping timing and special ,moves.(Just a metaphor...) Things that quite frankly the average Minecraft player largely ignored on a day to day basis. Yes you can say their adding new moves and shields, but as always... a vast majority of the players are going to want to ignore it.
Yes the mobs need to be harder, but please remember until you run into a zombie with full diamond and a speed potion, the mobs are still the same. After enchantments, potions and now arrows, the mobs are still for the most part normal. Making a combat mode that is much more cumbersome to use will not change that. Personally I am not looking forwarded to the new combat, because quite simply I have no intention of breaking out a street fighter move every time I run into a zombie. Now if you absolutely insist on changing the mode of combat than I would simply suggest you do that, and make a combat mode. Pvp's could have their cake and normal Mincrafters who don't want to run into Blanka in a cave could have theirs.
Quite frankly I haven't seen a single valid argument against the new mechanics. The only thing everyone seems to say is "it makes it more complicated." Seriously? It's not complicated at all. Some weapons do more damage, but swing slower. Some weapons are the opposite of that. Swords are designed for crowd control, axes for breaking through shields. Is this so hard to understand?

I wouldn't say "valid" since that word is up to interpretation. Anyway, it is a big change, and something no one was expecting. I can understand the dislike, and I hope it turns out for the good.

Are you sure? "Chivalry type combat" would be boring, as it would mostly involve griefing other people's bases, and only getting into a fight if you can win.
What? I'm confused as to what you mean?

I was mentioning that you are confusing the term. I was referring to how medieval combat actually was like.
Oh...I meant the actual game itself. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is what I meant. Medieval combat was ridiculously brutal, and definitely wouldn't work too well in a very realistic form. However, nowadays, instead of brutally pulling a person's intestines out with a sword, we do it with a bomb.

While I do like the updates thus far and understand that people don't like change, I do think a couple things are being handled poorly with the combat update.
Primarily the lack of attacks on the off-hand (meaning can't keep a sword in the off-hand to fend off monsters that interrupt your mining), the complete removal of defending with the sword to encourage use of shields (as opposed to a simple rebalance), and (one that annoys me most) the inability to use bows from the off-hand, meaning righties are forced to do left-handed archery and vice-versa.
Seriously, it'd be so much easier to switch arrow types on the fly to select them with the main hand and use the bow on the off-hand.
You need to post the bow thing in suggestions, makes way more sense than arrows in off hand, as well as making sense in that right handed people pull the string with the left hand, and vice versa.
If they are adding new arrows they might as well add spell cards and wizards and magic and dragons and stuff and more bad stuff and shanks and bandanas and belts and gloves and glasses and turtles and butter and quicksand and oil and gum and water and a thirst system and your mother and quickscoping and booze and throwable tnt AND chapter books and movies and super powers and breathable fire and cancer and planets and rocket ships and cars and fridges and toilets and walls and barricades and posters and buddha and sonic and dinosaurs and they should add shields.

Using mods I've played with about 90% of the things you listed. lol
But I just cant se my self surviving a giant mob attack anymore
I´m a girl, I get girl scared
I just starts panic and then spam-clikc
The new combat mechanics leave a lot of players I know scratching their heads on how to tackle situations that were prior; frankly a breeze.
For example, taking on several spiders at once; or multiple endermen. While I still do not have the aim down for these tasks myself, mob swarms are generally manageable as long as you Don't Panic.
If confronted by a swarm, tap or hold shift before each full bar sword attack.
Shift will slow your movement instantly to under 50%, guaranteeing that your next full-bar swing will provide an AoE knock-back along with the attack.
This can earn you some much needed breathing room while the bar recharges for the next swipe. This only works with a sword, and only if the little 'attack gauge' is full prior to the attack.
You can enable the attack gauge under the options menu -> graphics options -> attack indicator. (It's in the right hand column, about half way down). Using the default texture pack, or any updated to the snapshots (*cough, shameless JohnSmith Legacy plug*) will put the recharging attack bar right under the targeting cross-hair in the middle of the screen.
Unfortunately for some players, who's initial reaction is panic or those who jump scare easily - the combat update greatly rewards precision hits. Aiming is paramount.
Shields can also be incredibly helpful - as while blocking you still receive some bounce back from non-arrow hits, which can give you a little distance or lift necessary to escape a hoard. If nothing else, the shields are currently cheap to generate and absorb quite a bit of punishment given the material cost.
I wouldn't say "valid" since that word is up to interpretation. Anyway, it is a big change, and something no one was expecting. I can understand the dislike, and I hope it turns out for the good.
Valid in that it makes logical sense and the bias that is always there does not overwhelm the concept of making sense. I can understand the dislike, I'm just curious to know if there is any bad about the new updates.
Wait...aren't they totally useless as long as you have a shield? o_O
