Unique?! In what way that brainless hack 'n slash everything that moves was unique? If you want to play hack 'n slash game, you go play hack 'n slash game. Now I don't say that this dual wielding mechanic or new combat system is perfect, but it surely is way better than what we had.
Of course everyone have their own opinion, but claiming, that the old combat system was unique is utter bs.
If you use shield with your main weapon, is it sword or axe, you still need to switch to whatever item you want to use next quickly, while blocking oncoming attacks with the shield. You haven't noticed that?
And for those who miss the blocking with the sword: That mechanic was stupid. Seriously stupid.
I think you misunderstood. The definition of unique is: being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. Not cool. The brainless hack and slash is exactly what made it unique. Name another game like it. more game aspects doesn't make a game unique. The game Oblivion was a huge fail for me, and had these same fighting mechanics.
No, hunger did not at all make the game harder
I disagree with this comment. It still did, however, bring more use to food. (I used to play alpha all the time. And I always carry food.)

The quality of the hunger system is debatable. Many people dislike the system because it requires you to eat more, but you also regenerate faster. Essentially they just sped the process up, so I'm not entirely sure why people dislike it so much. Sure, in combat its annoying but generally everyone would be doing the same, and you can easily heal back the health you lost while eating.

Not really. Hack and slash is the most generic system you can get, because it requires the least skill and timing. While obviously sword-and-shield isn't a particularly unique system, any pre-1.9 combat was fairly common in any game that was as simplistic as minecraft. Look at Terraria for example, not too different from Minecraft, but possibly even more simplistic in combat terms. It isn't so much that the old system was unique among systems, it was just comparable because more complex games featured more complex systems. Minecraft's simplicity generally judges the quality and build of a system. The simple graphics and (sometimes) simple goals made it hard to make room for an incredibly complex, WoW-style combat system.
Not to mention that Minecraft uses java, so it's not like they chose to use a simple system such as that. There is very little wiggle room, I imagine if they had chosen more to work with, and cared less about older computers, the PvP system would have been much more complicated.
I think that this analogy you are all using is faulty. Hunger needed to be implemented to make minecraft harder without recreating the game. It added a new challenge. Also, the animals were somewhat useless until that update. Minecraft's pvp aspect of the game is completely different.
I don't really understand what this argument "recreating the game" even means in this context. I've spent a lot of time in the suggestion section and found suggestions where I think "this would change the entire game." How does making the player wait 0.6 seconds to do the most damage make it like a different game?
As for the idea "this makes the game combat oriented" it was always that way. Beds are still a thing, the player is very fast compared to any other mob and mobs make little effort to pursue you. If you don't want to fight mobs, build a wall around your base or light up the areas around your home, just as people would before. The idea combat is now the primary thing that the player now must do and there is no way to opt out is simply not true.
I'm not going to argue why or not hunger makes the game harder, that's already been discussed to death before. But it definitely changed how people would play the game. Food became a top priority and fights involved a lot more waiting. Which is why people are not happy with the new system. Fights aren't just run up a mob and click on it rapidly till it's dead. Ever since beta, the game has been became more complex and in-depth. And a lot of players don't like that, myself included in some aspects. Which is why I think this addition got mixed reactions from fans.

The addition of a food bar did make the game somewhat more difficult, but it didn't affect how, where and when you could build. The combat changes, however, have ruined the experience of building for me (and several others too)
I hate the PvP aspect of this game now. This thread is about why people hate 1.9, and I responded with my bias opinion. Terraria is a 2d game and PvP in that game is more simplistic no strafing, no flint and steel. It seems like a 1970s Nintendo game. And Like I said. Duel wielding with a shield isn't unique. Look: Oblivion, Halo 2, Dark Souls, Assassins Creed, Tom raider, and every western game ever created.

Here's the thing, I love to get on a super flat and slay every mob I can find until they give up spawning. PvP and PvE was, besides building, my one of my favorite aspects of the game.

I started playing more of 1.9 and hated it more then I did originally. WHY, can you duel wield a bow? I want consistent damage with my swords, and not some special "Sweep Attack". You could beat someone with a wooden axe when they have a diamond sword. Why?

Spam clicking mindlessly isn't particularly unique either lol, almost every combat system you can think of has been used before. Read my previous posts on this page.
The vibe I'm getting from you is that all you care about is something being unique, not if it's useful or interesting. You've stomped on dual wielding not because it isn't useful or agreeable, but simply because another game or mod has used it. Heck, even everyone else who dislikes 1.9 on here doesn't mind the dual wielding. It isn't a combat feature, it's a utility feature, and it's 100% optional to use.
If I were to make some horrid feature that was unique, it sounds like you would approve of it simply because it's different. This planet has a population of 7 billion, you're not the first to ever think of an idea. You can think you are, but it doesn't mean you are.
Though the spamclicking was far from brainless. It required much more skill than just counting and clicking like you have to do now.
Yes, it was brainless. There's no denying that. Now I know, that you are part of PvP community, which is the group where the most of hate to new combat mechanic comes from. Spam clicking, or "jitter clicking" like it's called in the PvP community don't need any skill at all, there has been .5 second damage immunity after the first melee attack for god knows how long, and spamming that poor attack button of your mouse was useless, it didn't do any more damage than this system we have now does. .6 second cooldown was implemented because of this. 3 clicks were just how much you needed to kill any mob in hard difficulty and it is still the same. Now only with that cooldown, which prevents you from smashing your poor mouse brainlessly. And you don't need to count anything, when there's indicator either under the recticle or next to your hotbar.
And no, you don't need to move your attention to anywhere else in your screen while checking that indicator, as both of them are easy to see where they are. That is, if you have set your viewing position correctly in front of your computer.
You see, DerpSquad's claim, that the old combat system was unique is total bs. When in reality it was not unique in any way or form. And there's countless games that has done hack 'n slash combat system even better than Minecraft had it done. Now don't get me wrong, I do love me some hack 'n slash game every now and then, but what it was on Minecraft was just plain stupid. And boring.

First off, You don't get good at the older version by spam clicking. Second, I don't only care if it is unique. It only supports my argument. Unique can improve the view of something, sure, but don't fix something that isn't broken.
Also, many games now are becoming alike. Games adopt stuff that was famous and then every things the same. Look at Destiny. Black ops 3, and Titainfall adopted the very similar movement.

I am not a PvPer anymore. I mostly play Pve. And you don't need to smash your mouse to do it, it's not like you are going "BANG BANG BANG" on it. The new combat system is just pretty much slower spam clicking. It is boring and for me, requires no skill. I would bet that if these changes had never been implemented nobody would be complaining about it.

Ah, you don't need to smash your mouse to do it? Why on earth none of you combat update haters haven't said that earlier, so we wouldn't of wasted that time on arguing about which combat system is better?
The new combat system is just pretty much slower spam clicking. It is boring and for me, requires no skill.
So, now you kind of admit, that old combat mechanic was spam clicking, because of this "The new combat system is just pretty much slower spam clicking" statement. Of course it don't require skill, like the old system didn't either. Only thing that requires skill in it is to block oncoming attacks at right time. <- That was sarcasm btw. Yes, whole sentence was sarcasm.
I would bet that if these changes had never been implemented nobody would be complaining about it.
You really figured that out yourself? Because, wow. If none of the changes had never been done, Of course no one would be complaining about them, because of they would never been implemented. That was sarcasm as well btw.
I do understand why some of you don't like the new system, I really do. As we all can't agree on everything. That's why there's been so many wars everywhere on this planet. Only thing I just don't understand is, that why someone would call something as brainless as the old system were unique, when it wasn't. And like I said: There's many other games, that have implemented hack 'n slash combat system way better than how it was implemented in Minecraft.
There is however something I agree with DerpSquad. And it is the fact, that someone who has wooden axe equiped can beat someone who has diamond sword. That's stupid.
Also the brewing stand requiring blaze powder to work is idiotic and unnecessary change.

This is the problem you have that we have answered a million times and you refuse to accept: Your problem is that you are thinking it's necessary to force pre-1.9 strategies into your current strategies. You insist that the old ways will work still, and thats why it seems to require no skill for you; you aren't using it properly. If you want to use the new system effectively, you have to unlearn pre-1.9 PvP/PvE and start fresh, because you can't take anything from 1.8's combat with you besides fundamental mechanics like crits.
Now disclaimer, I suck at 1.9 PvP/PvE, especially with skeleton horses. But that's just because I suck in general at PvP and PvE, so I don't mind the 1.9 system. A common issue with anti-1.9 people is that they don't see that they can't bend the universe to their will. The issue with notable amounts of the community disliking 1.9 combat seems like a nail file. It can break, but it'll never bend.
At this point I'm giving up even trying, because this discussion is dying and is just a handful of people like Zarlog yammering about things that have already been debunked and answered.

I agree with this comment. If I was building something pre 1.9 and a skelly spawned at my building site (even though they are well lit, they still spawn sometimes), I could have ran up to it and dispatched it in 3 seconds, no issues or near death experiences. Now, when that happens in 1.9, it takes like 30 seconds to kill it (it runs behind corners, making it hard to track). That is a major inconvenience when you just want to build something. Baby zombies are also pretty much minibosses now, there is nothing you can do if you get caught unprepared with one (they can kill you in 5 seconds, and low internet speed and FPS just happen to kick in at that moment.) Not to mention wooden swords are useless now. Why even bother making one when they do almost no damage?
I have no problem with timing my attacks. I think it turned PvP more strategic, but most people just want to make it whoever can click faster or who has the best gear and that sort of thing. Besides, most cross 1.8/1.9 servers are taking away the cooldown with plugins and stuff.

Skeletons' AI is a bit off if you ask me. They're movement is too random. And my only problem with baby zombies are that they're too fast/small.
I agree with this comment. I would not mind, and might have continued playing if they hadn't done this. It is too slow.
0.6 seconds (cooldown timer's duration of diamond sword) too slow?! Seriously how many times it has to be told you, that having faster cooldown time than that is useless, as there's 0.5 seconds of damage immunity after your first attack? It has been there always. (the .5 second damage immunity) You can always play the older versions if you can't get over that change!

30 seconds? Don't spam click! Then it will take as much time as it used to in old combat system! I borrowed this link from oCrapaCreeper, and I bet, that you have already seen it before! And here's more! You clearly don't understand how this new combat system really work, since if it takes 30 seconds from you to kill a mob, and while that the skeletons are running away is annoying, it doesn't mean, that it should take you 30 seconds to kill it. Ever bothered to actually think why they run away from a fight? Because they don't have anything else to defend themselves than that bow. Use your bow from distance and you will get the job done fast. No need to run idiotically towards it swinging your sword at it, when it always runs behind cover. Also, 3 correctly timed attacks are more than enough to dispatch any mob you encounter in the game.
Like said before, even in pre 1.9 combat system, it was useles to spam the attacks as fast, as possible, as there was .5 seconds of damage immunity after each attack you made. But nope, you haters just want to hate something because of you don't understand how something works? Right?
And of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and everyone has the rights to voice their opinions. Yes, SamusXteen, I know you're reading this, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and there's nothing you can do to that.

I timed it. 3.97 seconds, or practically 4 between two hits. But if you're PvE-ing and you are fighting thousands of mobs like on a super flat, it isn't fun and I just get bored. Spam clicking was never frustrating to be a victim of, so why did they change it? Don't fix some thing that isn't broken or you'll break it! I agree with Zarlog_Core There is no skill involved and it's just delayed spam clicking, and it times it for you!

So, now you kind of admit, that old combat mechanic was spam clicking, because of this "The new combat system is just pretty much slower spam clicking" statement. Of course it don't require skill, like the old system didn't either. Only thing that requires skill in it is to block oncoming attacks at right time. <- That was sarcasm btw. Yes, whole sentence was sarcasm.
Mining and crafting since 1.2.5, baby. I'm such a pro that---Okay who put my noob test results in my signature?!
Why are you so fascinated with my description?
I agree with this comment. I would not mind, and might have continued playing if they hadn't done this. It is too slow.
