PVP is not going to die, it is going to be better. The next update is adding skill, strategy, and fun to PVP. I think that the new features like shields and gliding will make it 100% better. PVP was a contest of who gets diamonds first and who can spam click the fastest. I love the new update.

This. Although I do have my misgivings about shields, this pretty much sums up my feelings towards the new update.
Shields add a whole new variation to PvP. Currently, I have found little purpose to them other than blocking arrows. I feel like with the armor protection reduction (Aka, diamond now only protects 66% damage instead of 80%), shields should increase that protection a bit, maybe 10%.
You know, I am starting to rethink this a bit. If it gets bad a spigot plugin called, "Disable 1.9" will come out. I think that Pvp will be okay after the update. Although Mojang has to spend a little bit more time on eclipse…
Why not? It's wings! WINGS! Who doesn't love wings? It really fits with my fighting style too.
Well at least not in any normal PvP scenarios. If you are in a massive mountain range than YEA FLYING PVP! If you are in a plains or forest biome it sort of is useless tho
I've got to be honest, I love PvP but hate the new updates since 1.7 came out. 1.6.4 was ok, but I love nostalgia when I go back to the good ol' days. That's why I play skyblock, you build your OWN world, create your OWN rules, and choose your path.
I could lie through my teeth and say 1.5 and 1.6 were the most fun versions of minecraft, but to be honest the alphas and betas were so much fun! Remember when people actually saw Herobrine and didn't photoshop him!? Those were the good old days...

The reason why I hate the new PvP is that you can only disable it via 'cheats or plugins'. I wish you could disable it via in world options or something. That's why I hate it. They could have two modes: Old PvP and 1.9 PvP. Y U NO GIVE PEOPLE WHO DUN LIEK NEW PVP CHOICE

Because the majority is excited for the new update. You are the minority. This is purely a business move.
It'll most likely NOT die out. In fact, I think more people would consider doing PVP after the "Combat" update. Considering PVP is combat itself, this is perfect.
i like the dual wielding, but the cooldown thingy sux, along with dia armor nerf. That will ruin pvp!
Woah..... just woah i'm stunned right now. *Holds laugh* cooldown "thingy"? How will it ruin PvP? compare a strategic fight again mindless spamclicking.

There are 2 main reasons why I think cooldowns are worse compared to simple spam clicking. (Plus 2 lesser ones)
1. Teaming is more effective. With every decent weapon, you attack slower then the damage immunity time prevents damage for. This leaves a gap where you're neither getting hit by an enemy player, nor immune to damage. This gap can be filled by other enemy players.
For example: Stone axes take 1.25 seconds to recharge. Damage immunity lasts for 0.5 seconds. This gives extra players 0.75 seconds to attack while the first person recharges.
Even swords which take 0.6 seconds to recharge are effected. Even if it's only 0.1 seconds extra time it still is faster then a single player can be, which compared to 1.8 or lower, there was no extra time at all.
In fact, if teams were stupid enough, single players could do more damage then the team could by hitting both of them, because you could also multihit. It was still a long shot to kill both of them, but it meant that unfair teams weren't as much of a problem.
2. Low FPS players are less effective. With the cooldown making you have to wait if you miss, it means that anyone who has a bad computer will have a harder time because they have less FPS, which means less chances to correct their aim in battle.
With 1.8, even if a high FPS player hits every time, they will only ever hit every 0.5 seconds. If a low FPS player say, only hits 20% of the time, if he managed to click 5 times in that 0.5 seconds they would roughly be at the same level as the high FPS player.
But with 1.9, if the high FPS player hits every time, all of his attacks will hit, because the weapon is slower then the damage immunity.
Compared to the low FPS player, who only hits 20% of the time. He will only ever be able to hit 20% of the time.
Lesser 1. Spam clicking still exists. If damage isn't an issue, you can still knock around you opponent like a ping pong ball just as much as in 1.8.
You can do everything you could in 1.8 including holding them in a combo to prevent them from attacking, and then forcing them off an edge or into lava.
This also might confuse some older players, who might wonder why all the zombies now take 50 hits to kill them. Or it will trigger muscle memory for them if they've trained with 1.8 combat
Lesser 2. It's harder to kill mobs. For some people this could seem like a good thing because "Mobs are too easy" but for others who can't even fire a bow accurately will completely dread the idea of slower weapons. Especially because you can no longer hit a group of mobs effectively anymore.
TL;DR: Spamclicking allows more equality then Cooldowns do.
(And for those of you who say "well spam clicking guaranteed a win for people with good connection" the cooldowns do fix that a little bit, but don't worry, shields will bring it back into their favor with time-related advantages.)
Most of the arguments that I've seen against the cooldown feature fall into two basic groups. Performance advantage, and difficulty increase.
First, I'll address the issue of performance advantage. While it is true that having a higher FPS will net you an advantage in combat, it's not as though this is anything new. Players with better-performing computers have always had an advantage in combat thanks to an increased ability to adjust their aim and react to their enemies. There's little to no difference between 1.8 and 1.9 when it comes to this fact. And truth be told, it seems right that the player with a better rig should have an advantage. That's their right for having spent the money to get it. Why should someone with a better-performing computer not perform better? I play on a crappy laptop that can barely run Vanilla at 45 FPS (frequently freezing or dropping to below 20 FPS), and even I can understand that concept. If you've paid for a better experience, you should have a better experience, plain and simple.
Secondly, the entire point of recent changes has been to make the game more difficult. For years people have been complaining that the game is too easy, this constituting the majority of the playerbase. If people are having difficulty not getting killed by mobs because they aren't good enough at combat, that doesn't mean that Mojang should cater to their lack of skill. That just means they should get better at the game. Even with this borderline potato that I play on, I can still manage to fend off hordes upwards of twenty mobs at a time. These combat changes won't affect that, as kiting and strafing are what keep you alive in these situations, not spam-clicking. Complaints by unskilled players to make games easier are what kills gameplay, not enhancements to increase areas of gameplay that were too easy before. Combat should not be so simple that it's possible for a bot program to be better than a human at it.

PVP will be better in my opinion.
Looking at the new snapshot, I hope there can be elytra fights or you know... AERIAL COMBAT.

I don't think PvP will be the same.
Dual wielding won't change anything really, I'm not too concerned about it. Its just the cooldown between hits drives me nuts

You do realize that an attack that damages and knockbacks groups of mobs was added right?

Actually it only knocks away groups, not damages them. And only within 1 block of your target and within 3 blocks of you.
