He also said they would have their own attributes, like a night vision helmet or a super sword which reduces your max health as a balancing function. He also mentioned faster drawback bows. I'd particularly like to see randomly generated gear, that would be fun.

Yeah. Sounds like we're going to have some interesting items. He never explicitly stated we'd have a 'super sword', but did mention items potentially increasing/reducing max health. This could be really good for mapmakers too. Can't wait.

So I was working on this really cool resource pack a while ago, but bad progress nonwithstanding, I think I found something much better... I'm probably gonna never release another custom Minecraft map.Until we meet again...
So do we know about when this wonderful update is coming out?
Not only will I enjoy playing it, but I will enjoy it even more when people stop tearing at each others throats about it.
Likely the date that was secretly in one of the later teasers. Something I think like May 23rd. Which I caught wind that it just so happens to be Turtle day. Also on the new Arrow types and speculation of new Weapons, I think it's possible some may be Dungeon or chest exclusive.
It looks like arrows will probably have adjustments to add effects that you can no longer get on bows (i.e. fire). Debuffs will be arrow enhancements. It looks like fire arrows, slow and poison arrows. But it's entirely possible to get blindness, weakness, and maybe even explosive. (Or more)
There wont be super new materials, diamonds may become stronger, but more rare, there will be dungeon exclusive items, along with new and more dungeons. There will also be new types of weapons in general. As far as the business with shields and arrow types I have this to say.
Dinnerbone said that PVP sucks. Jeb talked about new weapons. I feel like between the banners, and the hints- they want to see some enriched PVP action. The Mojang team pays attention to what makes Minecraft servers so popular. One type of those is the PVP servers. Some big new adjustments I believe will be a combat related "Offhand". When someone, for example, presses 1 and whips out the sword- it also brings out the offhand if it fits the 'mainhand'. I believe combat should be enhanced with a Rock, Paper, Scissors facet. One piece beats another which is susceptible to another.
I said this in April (evident in my signature "preview" of 1.9), and that they would integrate a shield into it. Instead of making stronger weapons, they're going to make it possible to be more complicated.
Spears will beat shield + sword(or axe, etc.), shield and sword(or axe, etc) will beat bows, and bows will beat spears. Spears meaning longer ranged 2 handed weapons, and swords meaning one handed weapons you can also hold a shield in.
The thing is- they can change the game all they want and add whatever content they think the majority will like, and will never matter, even to the few with nostalgia goggles stapled tom their dome. Why? Because you can ALWAYS play an old patch or cherry pick the content you like, than use the forums to find server buddies with the same... condition.
I am pretty sure I did not see a post pointing this out. Look at the upper right of this Image and you will see a corner of a structure made out of a block i cannot find in the current version of the game. It appears to be some kind of brick with a smooth bottom.
I tried my best to recreate the block seen. However I cannot recreate the true color since the screenshot was taken at sundown. Maybe someone else could take a shot. But for now this is what I got.

May 23 is also (from what I've looked up) Nicholaus Copernicus Day. Perhaps, if this IS the Combat Update, there will be a new space themed boss or mob? Maybe meteorite biomes that spawn more mobs than usual/spawn a specific mob (like mooshrooms spawning only in Mushroom Island biomes)? Seems a little to Terrarian though, if you know what I mean.

Figured it was time for a change.

From what I can tell, it appears to be andesite, not a brick or a new block. But I guess we'll have to see.
Looks new to me. Note the plus shape carved into the block. And the fact that it looks pink to me/
when you zoom in you can actually count the pixels. And it does not match polished granite.
