I don't think the makers of minecraft would make Steve and Alex both boys. ykcud said: "The name "Alex" can be used for both sexes." So i can see why you where confused,
-Long hair that goes off the head part of the model and onto the body, or the neck, whatever
-Pink lips
Steve is a boy.
-Larger arms
-Old Steve had a goatee. No, it wasn't a smile. You could see faded pink above the goatee, the mouth, and then a darker shade of brown above that, the nose
-Shorter hair that stays on the head and above the neck
Of course, you can pretend that they're different genders or are just genderless, but their skins' designs imply that they are what I just explained.
I know the characters are supposed to be "genderless" just like Steve is supposed to be, but come on, you can't deny they're man and woman. Why else would they create an extra default character that obviously resembles a girl.
That is exactly what they were created for. They know full well the intended gender of each. They even said they made the "Alex" model to be more appealing to girls that play the game who don't like the broad shoulders of Steve.
People just need to realize that the names, Alex and Steve, are purely for model type identification. You can put a girl skin on the steve model or a male skin on the alex model.

Have you seen Steve recently? Is that stubble I see on his face?
Maybe its dirt? Ok i might be wrong about steve. But my statement about alex still stands. Just because alex has feminine features doesn't mean it's a girl.
I haven't seen Alex but IDK why people are over complicating Steve. Male name and male features tell it all peeps. Minecraft is not some complex reality TV show or anything about how they could be a female or male and got surgery...just stop. xD
I'm sure Steve is a male, there is no such thing as surgery in Minecraft...I mean does it seem like it's in a more modern time? No, you still have very basic tools and too heal you just eat food...no medical supplies or anything super complex but redstone. Imagine all you want but Steve is surely a man lol.

Why are people so obsessed over this? Do you think it's mysogynist or cisgenderist or somehow not sufficiently post-modernist to view a generic character with feminine features to be female? When there are only two default skins, and one has masculine features and the other feminine features, it's only natural to assume that the first is male and the second female.
Oh come on people it's common sense. Alex is definitely female and Steve is male. Steve has a beard and like oCrapaCreeper said Steve did make male hurt sounds and I think he still does. Let's just keep it simple. There is now a male and female default skin.
Show my dragons some love by clicking on them! :-D
but you can use slim arms with any skin
I think its clear that he is talking about the default textures...
You are correct, however, any skin can be used.

Sounds sexist to me...
Until you get a Mojang artist to draw Canon-pixelated genitals, there is no "gender" ))))))):

Well it also has horns like a bull so it can be both
So since alex is male, with some people's logic, steve must be female? No!
Steve is the basic human being, the short hair, the beard-less face, a t-shirt and jeans which isn't specific to any gender.
We can all face it - Everything in minecraft is still neuter.

Or he's really a male and 'Alex' really a female whatever the politically correct game developers say. I know their intentions...

But its Adam and Eve! Not Alex and Steve!
Yeah, really I don't get people's anger with this. Its purely optional and most people don't use the default skins anyway, so who the flip cares?
