...One final comment: I am running Minecraft on a PS3. It too has lag and fps issues with revolving red stone lamps...
Did you know that the console edition is written in C++? The problem is NOT Java but inefficient code (I wonder how many people still think Java is interpreted, with no compilation of any sort (aside from the bytecode), like it was in the 1990s - in fact, it is compiled to native code after running for a while and analyzing the execution, which also allows optimizations not possible or difficult to do with statically compiled languages, even allows JVM updates to improve performance without recompiling, the main problem being memory management, such as having to manually allocate memory instead of letting the VM allocate whatever it needs (imagine having to do this for your everyday apps, every PC would need like 100 GB of RAM as you have to account for the worst-case memory usage to avoid out of memory), and garbage collection).
This. Right here. While Java may somewhat slightly factor into the issue, it's more or less Notch's code, back when this was just a small time project to make money for something bigger. Notch never intended for Minecraft to get this big.
FPS is not a commodity to be bought or sold. It is the product of how fast the hardware and software can update chunks of data. On the software side of things, efficient coding goes a long ways to reducing the cycles needed to update chunks. The path of least resistance so to speak. In my case, the amount of logic needed to turn the red stone lamps off and on. The more efficient the program code the less load on the hardware (processor and GPU's load). JAVA is not very efficient. It is a resource hog and it would be the last language I would pick for a game like Minecraft. Minecraft has evolved from a static Legos building game into a dynamic building and mechanized game. Throw out the red stone gadgets and the fps and lag goes away for most computers. But so goes the fun. I would suggest that in time your computer will have fps problems if future development of Minecraft continues in JAVA. One final comment: I am running Minecraft on a PS3. I looked at your revolving mine cart red stone lamp gadget. It works fine. I have built a few like yours, but I wanted a more compact non-mechanical version. I built one, but it taxes the cpu and gpu on my computer as much as your mine cart version.
I am very well aware how computers work.
If you are looking for a specific redstone contraption, then perhaps providing a picture? I could reproduce it and see how it works for me. You just said revolving redstone lap thing, and that was the first result I found on google.

You make it sound like FPS is a commodity that they can just give at will. "Having performance issues? Here, have some FPS."
You must have an old i7, or a laptop i7. Many of the current gen i5s are on par, if not better then previous generation i7s. If not that, then something else is likely going on.
I don't exactly understand why some people are having such trouble with 1.8, but neither does anyone else. I would love to get my hands on a computer having similar problems as others, but alas, 7 computers in and nothing. It makes me want to chock it up to user error,as 95% of problems are, but I m refraining from that, as Id prefer not to eat my words.
Can I trade one of my old rigs for your working one? Then you'll have a bad machine and I'll have one where everything runs great
1.8 lags super hard on computers that weren't specifically made for gaming, or High performance things (Super expensive things). You'll only notice your fps dropping if it drops below 60fps, Because that's all the game can use, as anything above 60fps is just being recycled. If you have a gaming PC with 100+ fps on average, you won't notice that your fps in 1.8 may be about 20 less.

Consider the following.
1. This is straight up wrong. Many people with good machines have lag issues with 1.8
2. I've played with workstation PCs, which are far from gaming oriented, and the game runs fine.

When 1.8 came out, I always lagged on my primary desktop. Mind you, it's capable of running Minecraft. Anyways, it was buggy as all hell, it lagged and whatnot. Ever since I quit about a year ago, I've come back and it's been fine. Maybe it was the 1.8.1-1.8.3 update(s), but it's now working for me just as it did before 1.8 came out and broke it all. I should also add that in that year that I was gone, I nuked my entire hard drive. Re-installed Windows with no files. So maybe that sped it up a bit, I'm not sure.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
