Oh good! I'm glad to see that I (A don't have to make a new thread for this and (B am not the only one suffering from this problem.
I've kept the same graphical options as 1.7 (Minus the Anisitropic Filtering, of course), yet I'm getting less than half the FPS, accompanied by the addition of numerous, random crashes. It also takes about 30 seconds to load a chunk in, paling in comparison to the minuscule 2 it took beforehand.
I wouldn't mind it so much, were the game not completely unplayable because of it; it causes blocks to break an entire 4 seconds after the animation has finished, makes combat impossible, and renders open heart surgery less risky than ocean traversal.
I guess that I'll just have to expect the opposite when the dev team announces performance improvements, from hereon.
Seems about the same to me. I normally use vsync, but with it off I get 250-350 FPS with everything on and 16 render distance. Back in 1.6.x it was closer to 500 FPS, but the 1.7 series was a bit lower. Update 1.8 plays about the same as 1.7 did as far as I can tell.
The poll seems about evenly split at the moment. Roughly half say it's faster or the same, and half say slower. Would be interesting to correlate that to hardware specs. From what I read a while back, one of the big performance improvements in the update was supposed to be multi-threading support. That would benefit systems with more cores the most.
EDIT: Haswell based quad core i7 with 16GB RAM and Nvidia GTX 760 graphics running under 64-bit Linux.

Are you sure? it looks like the slower bit has the majority for me...
47.8 percent say it's slower, while 52.2 percent say it either faster or the same. So only half have lost performance (slightly less than half, actually).
fps is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad for me on 1.8 itself but on 1.7.10 with mods 50 fps and in 1.8 snapshots 134 fps and i'm not joking, in 1.8 7fps
Just leave them both. Heck; the results for both poles show the majority having both lower fps and performance. That is useful data, you're not helping anything by getting rid of it.
I just hope Mojang somehow manages to see it at some point.
* Oh, and yeah, both fps and performance have tanked hard for me too, despite lowering settings and doing the tricks people keep saying to do. Turning on VBO and turning off alternate blocks does nothing for me.
** The Really sad thing is that they forcibly updated REALMS to 1.8 right away too, users of it don't get any say... Even with the world on a server it plays like crud for me now... 1.7.10 was really nice.

So, my "ancient" pc is now a bit weak for the game at its lowest settings; my frugalness has not paid off this time. I'd rather play it laggy and frustratingly painful while in 1.8 than not at all. Ill take pretty and 38-12(20avg)fps with jutters and jerks. I guess I will need to be mindful about the lava now. This is a bummer man. That's a, that's a bummer.
Those of you suffering from noticeable performance issues, are you using Java 7 or 8?
I ask because I read reports on reddit that upgrading to Java 8 improves performance. I run Java 8u20 64-bit myself and the performance is great with fluid movement, and the FPS a solid 60 (with vsync enabled). My system isn't even that strong, i7 920 @ 2.67 GHz, 6 GB DDR3-1066, AMD HD 5770, all game settings maxed (16 chunk render distance).
don't ask..

47.8 percent say it's slower, while 52.2 percent say it either faster or the same. So only half have lost performance (slightly less than half, actually).
1.8 the worst update as far as fps goes
so angry with 1.8's lag
I just hope Mojang somehow manages to see it at some point.
* Oh, and yeah, both fps and performance have tanked hard for me too, despite lowering settings and doing the tricks people keep saying to do. Turning on VBO and turning off alternate blocks does nothing for me.
** The Really sad thing is that they forcibly updated REALMS to 1.8 right away too, users of it don't get any say... Even with the world on a server it plays like crud for me now... 1.7.10 was really nice.

Jimmy finds humor in the juxtaposition of the previous two posts.
