The game is way too far into development for a move to another language / engine to be effective and efficient, that's the point I was mainly trying to make. Rewriting the game would bring in many advantages, but it would introduce loads of problems too, a lot of the code would have to be rewritten because it relies on Java utilities, it would take a long time to actually rewrite the game to the point where it's on par with what it is currently, modability would be thrown out the window, moving to a mainstream rendering engine would not allow Mojang to customise their engine to suit the game better, and more. Yes, using Java is a horrendously bad idea for game development, but this far into the game, moving to another language would be a worse idea.
On top of that, AFAIK MS is only in as business partners with Mojang, they aren't touching the game unless Mojang gives it up. Both sides have confirmed they're only in it as business partners, Mojang is here to stay, it is still Mojang's property.
This is based on a few faulty assumptions. First, that rewriting the code would "take a long time" and "introduce loads of problems." Development costs money, so there are few problems (in game design) that can' be overcome by throwing money into development. Mojang, meanwhile, has a tiny development team and more money than most large game dev houses. They have all the elements of the formula on their side, and few of the problems. They need only allocate a portion of their money into development, and they could recode the thing and dump Java. Yes, it will be hard. So hire better, talented developers. Yes it will take a long time. We can wait. None of these problems are insurmountable.
Other Unreal or similar-engined games port over to portable no problem, so that's not a real argument against it, either. Heck, they are porting shooters to OSCILLOSCOPES now.
Next you are assuming roles in the MC/MS relationship that are based on your opinion, not fact. MS can infuse more cash or assign development team resources all it wants. There is nothing prohibiting that, other than possible bad press. They can still do that, and still keep Mojang. It is not one or the other, and thinking so reveals a lack of understanding on how mergers work, as well as how the game development business operates.
All of this is very, very doable. Just not by Dinnerbone and his guys. It's way above their heads.
I have a question though, does block story have as much going on in it (chunk updates)? Like having to worry about plant growth, precipitation, enchant glow, redstone states etc.?

This wouldn't matter. Java is far WORSE at handling those simultaneous calculations, because the same code has to also handle the physics, AI, and all other aspects of gameplay.

I do agree that Microsoft isn't planning on doing anything with Minecraft directly. Their changes to their media policies and specifically excluding Minecraft from them made it clear that they don't want to touch it.
But yes, if they wanted to, you could likely just get rid of everyone at Mojang and take the whole thing over if they so wished. 2.5billion means Microsoft got the better end of the deal for sure.

During a purchase of another company with an existing customer base, Rule # 1 is never to alienate the existing customers. There was never a chance that Microsoft would make any dramatic moves at the beginning, because they knew to do so would infuriate the gamers, which is really what they are buying. (The game is a means to take money from the gamers. If you anger the gamers, you lose the money.)
This doesn't in any way rule out major changes in the future though. What is likely to happen -- and what was already telegraphed by the departure of Notch and the Tweet by Jeb that he was considering leaving -- is that MS will slowly bring in some additional people who will shift the focus, and the old Mojang guys will quit, either because they resent the new management, or because they can't keep up. It won't be an overnight firing, it will be a slow and imperceptible change. But even THAT isn't a safe bet, since MS has such a horrible track record when it comes to their PC gaming division.
But it's only clear that "they don't want to touch it" right now. But for sure, they are thinking of ways of maximizing their return on investment, which means changes. If they weren't they would never have become Microsoft to begin with. Business 101.

Off topic, but I'll respond anyway. There's no way that Minecraft the game is worth 2.4 billion dollars. You can't recoup that from direct sales of the game. No way, no how. It's clear to me that Microsoft planned for cross-licensing and merchandise. We've already seen this with announcements for a movie, an adventure game, and a Simpson's tie-in. Probably other stuff I missed as I don't track game news. The big question is whether they are going to kill the goose that lays golden eggs?
I don't think so. The era of Ballmer is over. However, there are two games here: the single player game and the server game. I can imagine them leveraging the server game for subscriptions or micropayments, but I still think it's doubtful. No game on Earth makes much money from either. Messing around with the single player game is problematic as well. It's the foundation for everything, and screw it up and you lose that 2.4 billion. I expect some polishing, but not much more than that. Microsoft is too smart for that.
Contrary to Hollywood myth, corporations aren't in the business of losing money on evil villain schemes. That doesn't mean they can't be stupid (cf. Nokia), but the odds of them taking Minecraft and destroying it are remote. There will be a change in the future roadmap, but since there really wasn't a roadmap in place anyway, it doesn't mean it's doomed.
My main concern is that they mainstream it too much.
There's no way that Minecraft the game is worth 2.4 billion dollars. You can't recoup that from direct sales of the game. No way, no how.
Very true. Just off game sales alone, you are looking at only about 3/4 of a billion, but thats for what has already sold, so theres nothing for Microsoft to gain from that, so the rest has to come from outside of the main game itself. Microsoft "inherited" all the merchandising deals such as the Minecraft LEGO deal, which from my inability to find a store that has them in stock tells me is doing quite well. Minecraft the game is not the cash cow Microsoft was after, they wanted Minecraft the name.
Speaking of Lego Minecraft... am I the only one who thinks it would be ironically hilarious if Lego made a Minecraft game in the style of their other lego games? I would totally buy it.
Alright, I think I've gotten to the bottom of what was going on to make Minecraft 1.8.1 run at 1-2 fps in the VM. OpenGL 2.1 WAS active though. When other games I tested required a higher level of OpenGL than the VM supported it did not do software rendering, it errored out with an opengl error of some sort.
I was finally able to get 1.8.1 running at an average of 25-45 fps by tweaking the Minecraft video settings. It looks like some settings just do not work well with the VM's OpenGL, the Host Video card supports OpenGL 4.x so that's not the problem. The render distance was left at the default of 12. Turning MIP-Mapping completely off and turning V-Sync off are what made the largest difference, I'm not sure if anything else I messed with had any real affect but those two things raised the fps from 1-2 to 25-45 with much higher peaks.
So thankfully it looks like I will be able to play Minecraft in VM if I really want to, just not at 60fps unless I'm willing to drop the view distance. Now I need to do the Minecraft vs Block Story comparison outside of the VM..

I feel I need to make an addendum real quick though. Even though I was able to get the apparent fps up to 25-45 that doesn't mean I can same much about it's playability yet though. I don't have an actual mouse I can use with this test box yet just a wireless Logitech keyboard with a built in touch pad. I had thought I had a wireless mouse tucked away but all I can find is a Bluetooth mouse so I'll have to place an order.
The problem is that with Minecraft, at least in the VM, the camera mostly just keeps spinning in circles either straight up or down whenever I try to control where I'm looking. I can occasionally get it to look level for a short bit. So I really can't say anything about it's smoothness or lag yet since it is so chaotic. I can only hope and pray it behaves normally with an actual mouse.
And now is where I say that I don't have that problem at all with Block Story. It just works exactly like one would expect even with the track pad.

Woah, is it me, or are groups of comments being erased from the thread, I noticed this a couple weeks ago...
Posts which are off-topic are violating the forum rules and are being removed. As I just posted, this thread is about offering positive/negative critiques of Minecraft 1.8, and quite a few people have been having off-topic discussions for quite a while.
1.8.1 seems nice enough overall, but I just can't let go of my vision of what more could have been done for Minecraft in all that long time if Mojang/notch had been willing to actually use a fraction of all that profit to both Manage and Develop Minecraft properly.
Such as buying new ready made and proven superior engines and hiring (even if temporarily) specialist professionals to adapt the game to such an engine (or completely outsourcing the conversion like the other platform versions of Minecraft). Or Hiring a Modder Team of the best Mods out there as well as buying all the best mods and making them optionally available in Vanilla and fully compatible with each other. What the game has really been missing is a Vision and the Drive to make it happen.
Below is an example of where Minecraft 1.8.1 COULD have been in the last year considering that what it is compared to was a version of another engine from 2 years ago made by one young indie developer and a friend...
Minecraft 1.8.1 vs Block Story - Basic Performance Test
In a VM:
The test was conducted in a new clean free VMWare Player 7 (ws11) VM under Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
- The VM was given 2 cores at 3.0 Ghz each, 8GB Ram and plenty of HD space. It ran 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium and had NO JAVA installed. Hardware Acceleration for DirectX 9 and OpenGL 2.1 were enabled for the VM:
- Minecraft was downloaded and installed directly from minecraft.net from within the VM. The Windows installers at minecraft.net are the new one that set up their ideal version of JAVA themselves.
- Block Story was installed via Steam (Yes, happily I have found that Steam can work in at least a VMWare VM, though the games with Securom and worse DRM will likely crash since they don't like being in a VM). VMWare VM's since VMWare Workstation 7 have full support for DX9, the only VM I know to do so.
Minecraft 1.8.1 (with it's launcher provided perfect Java) and all Default settings except [V-Sync=OFF and MIPmaps=0] ran at 25to 45 fps in seed "1710" created with mc1.8.1. The best speed I could get while changing the fewest defaults and keeping Rendering Distance at 12. For some reason at this time the camera was almost uncontrollable whereas the camera in Block Story worked fine. (I will test this again with a mouse instead of touch pad).
Block Story (v8.1.3 from Steam) with all Video settings at maximum except render distances left at default 40h/40v ran smoothly at over 360 fps.
Block Story (v8.1.3 from Steam) with all Video settings at maximum and render distances pushed up to 200h/100v ran smoothly at over 165 fps.
Block Story (v8.1.3 from Steam) with all Video settings at maximum and render distances pushed up to MAX 500h/300v ran smoothly at 70 to 105 fps.
NOT in a VM:
4 Cores @ 3.0 Ghz each. 16 GB Ram and plenty of HD space. Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Minecraft 1.8.1 (with it's launcher provided perfect Java) and all Default settings except [V-Sync=OFF and VBO=ON] ran smoothly at 70to 90 fps in seed "1710" created with mc1.8.1. Mouse camera controls worked properly.
Minecraft 1.8.1 (with it's launcher provided perfect Java) and all Default settings except [V-Sync=OFF and VBO=ON and Render Distance MAXed to 32] ran at 15fps in seed "1710" created with mc1.8.1. Mouse camera controls worked properly.
Block Story (8.04 DRM Free) with all Video settings at maximum except render distances left at default 40h/40v ran smoothly at 1000 to 1100 fps.
Block Story (8.04 DRM Free) with all Video settings at maximum and render distances pushed up to 200h/100v ran smoothly at over 330 fps.
Block Story (8.04 DRM Free) with all Video settings at maximum and render distances pushed up to MAX 500h/300v ran smoothly at 170 to 220 fps.

Not saying Minecraft is the model of optimization, because it sure isn't but 1.8 has been just hit or miss for many people, so its hard to really judge fairly when Minecraft just had a massive rewrite and bugs are still needing to be ironed out.
