If 1.8 remained a pre-release then I would agree with you and some patience is required, but it's not. It's a full release and it should be stable.
You are assuming they knew about the lag AND were able to reproduce it BEFORE they released it, which is entirely asinine. Given their ability to playtest an update is limited to a handful of people, and the fact that the lag issue didn't manifest itself at the scale it currently is at till after the release, they couldn't have possible known how wide spread the issue was until they released it for the millions of people and started getting flooded with reports. Most people DONT use the snapshots or pre-release versions
Did you expect them to retract the update? No, because it worked for many people just fine, plus people are perfectly able to change versions back to 1.7 until the issue is resolved. Though most people are staying with 1.7 mainly for server support.
Just because people criticize something doesn't mean that they don't like it. I highly doubt people who don't enjoy playing MC would make an account on the MC forums.
The issues will never be resolved if people continue to deny they exist.
---
Btw, MC isn't a gift that we have to be "thankful" for. We paid for the game. Mojang got paid to make it (and paid quite a lot I might add). Generally, people want the things they paid money for to work. Seems like common sense to me.
We arent denying they exist! I know there are problems (Boats, lag, ect.), but you are not helping the situation by arguing and shoving your opinions down our throats!!! You cant say a hole update sucks because of a little lag, it will get fixed eventually, just be patient, and if you have a problem with the devs. Then go tell THEM, via reddit or twitter, arguing here is doing no one any good.
and who says they have to update the game at all!? They have no contract with us stating, we will forever update MC, they could have stopped whenever they wanted to, but they havent, and they arent just going to put it in a bad state and then dump it in the gutter.
Did i say they did? No. Your example of a car breaking is an unfitting analogy in this situation.
You are completely and astoundingly wrong. They are selling 1.8 right now. They are taking money for it. By your argument, Microsoft should be offering Windows for free ever since version 2.0 in 1987. As an early user of MC, I get tired of waiting for basic things like chunk loading and boat physics and mob AI to get fixed. I've had years of patience, and you want more? I get that you are a supporter, and that's great. But don't foist your enthusiasm on everyone else. People are entitled to their opinions, and sometimes they may be as grounded in experiences as your opinions are.
They aren't selling 1.8, they are selling "Minecraft", which has an OPTIONAL update of version 1.8. The EULA states that the game is provided "As is", and they are not obligated to provide fixes or other updates beyond the initial 1.0 release.
Windows does not apply to your logic because they are vastly different products. Each iteration offers different features, functionality, capabilities, etc. Microsoft's business model is , if you want those things, you have to pay for it, and that is NOT how Minecraft is marketed. They could if they wanted, but they don't. But if they did, then yes, 1.8 would have a quality guarentee that has to be upheld to prevent lawsuits.
Stop saying 1.8 Took a year, it barely took 8 months.
nope more like 11 from the start of 1.7 to we got 1.8

The first 1.8 bound snapshot was released in january 2014. 1.8 was officially released in september 2014. So that is only 9 months.
that was the first snap shot how long did that snap shot take to make? and then get released

A valid argument, but also consider that 1.7 was still in active development up till ~1.7.5 So the first development of what would become 1.8 was also sharing development time with 1.7, which would stretch out its release.
Exact date that the first snapshot began is impossible for us to tell for sure. But let us also again consider the fact that 1.8 contained mainly engine rewrites, which take a long time to do.
Look at Fallout New Vegas compared to Fallout 3. Really the only thing that was added to the game feature wise was gun mods and ironsights, and they had a whole year of nothing but engine development time. And those were skilled professional programmers who have been in the industry for decades. Here we are talking about a handful of frelance programmers who rewrote almost a whole engine in less than a year.

You don't count the time between 1.7 release, and the beginning of 1.8 development.
You cannot say that 1.8 took 11 months, when it was only in development for 8.
um as echonite said the first snap shot was out in January that's 9 months right there but how long before that was in in development.... meaning it is well over 8 months

valid argument but how advanced is minecrafts code and engine compared to a game like that? i mean not sure but i would think a game like fall out would take a lot longer to program for, like does new vegas and 3 have different maps do they run at a steady frame rate?

Well, it overhauled the Mob AI, overhauled the Block rendering format, overhauled the way the game handles IDs, overhauled the Block data format/Chunk format, added a few mobs, added new items, made Villagers useful, created Humanity with Alex, oh and made a ton of map-makers happy. I don't see why that wouldn't take a year.

Fallout new vegas was made using the exact same engine as fallout 3. The dev team, Obsidian, had 1 year of time devoted to engine improvements and changes before they had to switch over to game development. So they were handed a functional engine, spent a year reworking things, and all you really saw for it was mainly only iron signs and gun modifications.
Mojang spend, lets just say for the sake of the argument, a year and literally rewrote their engine almost from scratch. Meaning they basically started with next to nothing.
And for the record, FalloutNV WAS released with a major lag issue that effected everyone. So its release had its share of bumps. I will also interject that even Skyrim has bugs that were known about back with Morrowind! Broken terrain generator anyone?
I'm not saying Mojang did a super amazing job with their re-coding, only that what they did do and managed to release in the given time period was overall good. It has issue, yes, and I hope they do work them out, as that would likely mean performance improvements for myself and anyone else not exactly effected by the lag issue.
I guess Mojang doesn't read bug reports then, or test their final product properly.
Again, you are assuming they knew about and could REPRODUCE the lag issue prior to release.
Debugging 101. If you can not reproduce the issue, then it is next to impossible to fix it, because you don't know where it is breaking.
To this day, Mojang may not be able to reproduce the lag, given that it appears who gets hit with the lag issue is seemingly random.
You can report a bug all you want, and it can receive thousands of votes in support that it is indeed a bug, but if the developer can not reproduce the bug, then a fix can not be made. Period.
Again, you are assuming they knew about and could REPRODUCE the lag issue prior to release.
Well that's an awful lot of excuses and assuming that you're doing.
14 year olds in their parent's house have reproduced the lag and provided evidence of it and you expect us to believe that Mojang can make a game, but they don't have this capability? Common now be realistic.
If they tried to reproduce it, but couldn't obviously they knew about the lag, but released 1.8 as a full release anyway.
um as echonite said the first snap shot was out in January that's 9 months right there but how long before that was in in development.... meaning it is well over 8 months
Dinnerbone announced that developement wound BEGIN on January 1st, it was release on September 2nd, therefor 8 months becuase you wouldnt count all of september since it was only 2 days
um as echonite said the first snap shot was out in January that's 9 months right there but how long before that was in in development.... meaning it is well over 8 months
This should settle the debate of how long 1.8 took once and for all:
Date difference from Jan 9, 2014 to Sep 2, 2014
The total number of days between Thursday, January 9th, 2014 and Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014 is 236 days. This is equal to 7 months and 24 days.
So, not a year, not even "well over 8 months" (or 9 months, which would only be true if it took all of January and September) but just under 8 months. Granted, that was the longest period any version was in development, even almost all of Beta if you count Beta as a single version, as well as the number of days between major updates (312 days since 1.7.2).
It should also be noted that 1.8.2 still hasn't been released yet, and 1.8.1 took more than two months; by comparison, 1.6.2 was released a week after 1.6.1; 1.5.1 two weeks after 1.5 (note that these were bugfixing updates; particularly fun is the description for 1.5.1: "1.5.1 is an update which mainly fixed issues with low frame rates on certain devices" - "certain devices" seems to suggest it had a very specific performance problem like 1.8 has).
Well that's an awful lot of excuses and assuming that you're doing.

I'm not the one assuming. You are assuming they knew and could reproduce the issue.
That is great that a 14 year old can reproduce it. But again, given the seemingly randomness of the issue and who it affects, it is well within reasonable logic that no one at mojang could reproduce the issue on their machines. Once again, like a parrot, I have the game working just fine on 7 machines, so the question is, what is it about 1.8 that allows me to run it fine but not others? This is a very valid and honest question. What factors does it boil down to that determines who gets hit with the issue?
As far as Mojang could tell the game ran just fine. They had zero logical reason to withhold the update because as far as the snapshots were concerned, everything ran smoothly for the majority of people at that point in time.
The first snapshot for 1.8, 14w02a, was released on January 9, 2014, and 1.8 itself was released on September 2, 2014; according to this calculator:
So, not a year, not even "well over 8 months" (or 9 months, which would only be true if it took all of January and September) but just under 8 months.
