I tend to think of it this way... when I buy a game and there's no skin customization allowed, I end up playing either as a male or a creature (with few, but notable exceptions). When I buy a game and skin customization is allowed, I start off with a genderless or a male skin. This is really not much different than the latter case - you start off with a skin (regardless of gender!), and then you can change it if you want to.
In regards to Alex versus Steve, specifically, I was never happy viewing Steve as genderless although I was always happy to play as him whenever the skin server was down. If Steve was genderless, I seriously doubt he'd have a five o'clock shadow going on (although, to be fair, some ladies do end up having a bit of a facial hair problem. Alex, on the other hand, looks a lot like I'd imagine Jeb to look in blocky form, and his outfit is a heck of a lot more suitable to the tech-level of the game (i.e., middle ages with magic and an interesting electrical wiring system). I say "his" because, if we're talking about genderless, Alex looks a whole lot closer to the middle of the gender binary and grammar tells me "he" is appropriate when discussing things without gender. Dunno, though, I can see how a lot of people would view Alex as female. I don't, personally, and tend to believe that a lot of people hate Alex simply because they weren't given a choice and because people are - whether they like to admit it or not - generally resistant to change.
I think the addition of a female character and model is great! The Alex skin model looks great. Very well made and not some fish eyed short short wearin poorly made thing from off the net, I hate those kind of skins they're everywhere! Also I think that only Steve and Alaex have genders and the animals are generic younger people should tell the difference between boy and girl and would see the cows and chickens as generic genderless representations of animals.
GUYS, I JUST WORKED IT OUT! Alex is going to be part of the movie with Steve! They are on different missions and they meet and they fall in love with each other (provided Alex isn't a male with a ponytail)
Sorry it was a bit offtopic, but this is what I think will happen for the Minecraft Movie!
Then Steve becomes a zombie and Alex is all like ooh stevward. And then she is about to be hit by a minecart and he jumps in front and punches it. And then it will end and say minelight
That is a quick tutorial on how to ruin a movie.

Yes. cause I totally spread gold bars on my toast...
Dont abuse the formatting to make huge fontsizes please. Keep formatting to a minimum to keep your text rea
adable.
Also, why cant they fall in love if Alex is also male?
Interrestingly you could argue that the shading near his chin and on the cheeks is beardshadow, something the Alex skin doesnt have.
there will probably be massive backlash if there's a homosexual relationship in the Minecraft movie. I'm fine with it, but just the idea of a Minecraft movie is stupid to me.
Or not. Maybe they're both just different appearances of hermaphrodites, as half the people here have said.
Maybe they're from different worlds, even, and have come to MC, with somehow then having the same "special powers," compared to, say, NPC Villagers. "Gender" may and /or may not, be one of them.
I say "Gender," and "and /or," because really, a hermaphrodite could reproduce with either its "male" part s, or its "female" part s - and, as luck would have it, all Animals with "Gender," are descended from, or still are, hermaphrodites - I've read it's one of - possibly the most, common mutations, among Animals (which includes humans) today, to have "not specific," again "Gender."
Biologically speaking.. so, part of the problem of defining "Gender" is trying to (speaking as someone who Biology is one of my top 2 foci). Even if something is Biologically a given "sex" (and I'm avoiding issues of sexuality), its "Gender" - including parts of behavior - might be rather not just single, but variable - which, too, might be "simple" - or Difficult, to define, and, as far as I can tell, some people do that, the more or less chosen part, deliberately.

Not any Human hermaphrodites. They can only reproduce with one set of their organs if any at all. There have been no documented cases of a human hermaphrodite being able to reproduce both ways.

I think mojang has taken 2 steps 2 far. They first gear up there EULA, and now make a new character model that if you get, can't switch back to the old one. They need to not rush things.
Is it just me or does everyone have Alex??(Double "?"s as the name is Alex? not Alex)I read though the whole thread,AND the one on PMC,and I see no one saying "I got steve".

What is random account ID?
Pretty much this.
Praise be to Spode.
Yes. cause I totally spread gold bars on my toast...
The ID code used to identify your Minecraft account.
No, it was a beard. Otherwise, it was a pretty damn horribly designed mouth.
In the updated Steve skin the mouth is also in the same place:
Then Steve becomes a zombie and Alex is all like ooh stevward. And then she is about to be hit by a minecart and he jumps in front and punches it. And then it will end and say minelight
