What this means is that the player model itself is genderless so that skin artists can have a wide array of options when creating male or female characters. Steve himself is a specific skin that is clearly male. Not sure why everyone is assuming Steve is genderless when clearly Notch was implying that the player model was genderless probably because he had custom skins in mind.
I dunno, I haven't read that interview in sometime.
Does anyone know if this Alex skin is available for download? Because I am only of the 50% of players to have their arms shrink and my skins just do not translate well into it besides some of the female ones which I usually play as.
Exactly. I just can't believe the ndf is actually trying to sell the idea that "Steve" is genderless and not a male. LOL. No amount of hand-waving will ever make me believe that.
I like the Alex skin, it's looong overdue for females to have a better default character option. And, of course, anyone else who wants to use it too. To be quite frank how much work would it be to have several defaults to choose from?

While Steve? appears male and Alex? appears female, is there any actual evidence that they're not both the same hermaphroditic gender that other Minecraft creatures are?

Quote from DOMOHEADmc»cool but boys might be dissapointed and/or confused that they have a girl skin. girls never cared about steve because they assume since its a game for boys just deal with it, its pretty much genderless anyways.
what are you talking about? Minecraft isn't a game for boys. It's a game for everyone. don't tell me you're one of those people who think only guys are allowed to play video games....

Evidence? Other than the beard stubble Steve has and Alex doesn't have? Yeah, when I'm playing Steve there is.
* Plus, the deep theme in Minecraft is that Steve isn't from the same world as these creatures, "Forever alone" remember that?. So what applies to those creatures doesn't necessarily apply to Steve and his kind.
** I also have a solid theory about the source of zombie pigmen that would, ah nevermind, we'll skip that one.
*** If mojang really wants to make it canon, and they have not, that the Steve character is a Hermaphrodite like you suggest rather than whatever the player wants it to be, then I suggest they actively advertise it as such publicly so that every parent buying the game for their children knows this. It would be fascinating to see the effect on sales, heh heh.
-- All that said; The "Steve" that any one player is playingis whatever gender they want it to be and has whatever history they want it to have etc etc just like any game. Or, like many, they can just not think about things like gender at all and just enjoy the game for it's non-gender challenges and amusements. People should be free to make that association for themselves if they want.
Just be realistic enough with yourself to know what the skin looks like to other people, and that nothing you say to them will change how it appears to other people, unless perhaps you are on the Jerry Springer Minecraft Server. Besides; I think by now everyone should know that the gender of a game skin can never be counted on to tell you the gender of the actual player, especially if the skin looks female.
--- But trying to tell people that "Steve" doesn't look male and "Alex" doesn't look female as compared to each other would be ludicrous. * And my custom skin actually has a pony tale too, but doesn't look anything like a female. Though I suppose the mustachio helps.

Minecraft is a videogame. Players deserve the right to choose for themselves what Steve and Alex are like. This is not a sims game, no present elements are gender-based. Anyone who is against using the optional feature of skinnier arms, should just stick with the default option.
It's ok, but i really hope they do add the option to toggle skinny arms on or off.
It doesnt fit to some skins very well, but it's nice as an optional feature. Oh, same thing for the Steve/Alex skin. It'd be cool to have an option to change that too. I mean, isn't it weird to be a boy/have a boy name and have a girl skin?

I see no tits on Alex yet. Thus I think Alex is actually based off of Jeb with the orange hair and the ponytail.
Mojang overhauled the skin system and with that made the ability to have a second layer all over the body, separate arms and legs, and they also talked about the opportunity of having different player models.
Well there we go, we have one with skinnier arms, and can be used to make female characters, is given to new players next to Steve, gives some variation on servers with people just starting out.
Notch once said, all mobs and Steve are genderless. This does not go against what he said. Don't look at the fact that Steve used to have a beard, and Alex has girly hair and clothes, in Minecraft that doesn't mean anything. Steve isn't a boy, Alex isn't a girl. they both are neither. Genderless sheep make lambs with other genderless sheep.
Of course, people see what's a male or a female, someone with a beard is usually a man, though Eurvision and circusses prove it isn't always like that. The point is, it doesn't matter in Minecraft, that was what Notch was really meaning.
For some reason, I've seen people complaining that "Alex?" isn't an anatomically correct female. But really, that's what the second layer for a skin can be used for, to add more shape to a character.
I, for one, may be using the 3-pixel-wide skin. My character is a boy (who doesn't work out much) wearing a labcoat, but the sleeves - which are in the second layer - make my arms appear larger than other players. I would rather my arms appear to scale or possibly slightly smaller, keeping with the not working out much aspect.
Why wouldn't there be any ways to tell n00bs apart?
Don't you just memorize a new Skin? I mean, I know that it literally doubles, the amount of Memory you have to use, to go from "1" default skin to "2," but don't you think you can start to handle that??
It's not like - if there were a - #"3," would be as much more (factor of 1.5), than 1->2 (factor of 2). And #"3"->#"4," would be even easier (factor of 1.33) - with the exception that then adding these on, two more Skins, to the now pre existing 2 skins, would be again a factor of 2 - (factor of 2).
I honestly don't like the new default player skin. It says that people who have this skin can't change it back to Steve and that the skin the player gets is decided by the user id coding. If one want's the default Steve skin they have to download it and I really don't like that. It should be decided by the player's choice and not the coding of the user id. I, as a male, would find it really annoying if I got this skin and would want to immediately change it, but, (as I can't access the internet on the computer I play on because people won't let me use the internet on my own laptop at the location where I am), I can't do that. I am really annoyed. Thank you. brickticks.

Read The Rules: http://www.minecraftforum.net/meta/rules
Alex does look a lot more female than male, but I still see a guy in her.
