A crafting recipe that allows you to use up dirt and gravel. Nice to not have to surround dirt with stone to keep the grass from spreading where you don't want it to go.
It actually existed in the game since 1.7.1 (spawning in Mega Taiga, Mesa, and Savanna M biomes), but was unobtainable and not distinctly identified until 14w25a. It was presumably added because they didn't want grass spreading to the dirt in these biomes for aesthetic reasons.
trees will leave grassless spots on the earth after they are felled
It's the opposite, actually: when a sapling planted in coarse dirt grows into a tree (except for large oak), it converts the coarse dirt into regular dirt. You can also change it back by tilling it and then making the farmland turn back to dirt.
I hate making a hut out of the way of my main area then have to use gravel for paths.
I find dirt paths much for visually appealing.
This change that many people find useless with actually improve soooo many of my builds.

Ever had something (or somebody) on your railroad that you did not want there?
Now to hope Dokucraft's texture of it is just really smooth dirt.
You want the coarse dirt to be smooth?
*brain asplodes*
No. The old name "grassless dirt" meant that grass cannot spread to it, not just that the dirt is currently without grass.
