Hold the phone... A new hostile non-boss mob that ISN'T balanced around a playef just starting out? That just made me about 10% more optimistic.
Which isn't saying much. If it's going to be ANOTHER ranged mob that fires too fast for you to actually dodge without potions (that would make three in total, the others being the Wither and skeletons) i'm going to be rather annoyed. Also, I'm regardless a bit wary on the "you should fight him with diamond armor" claim since Notch claimed that the Enderdragon would be hard enough to require enchantments even though he's barely more difficult than an Enderman.
However, Jeb can do a lot of interesting things with a ranged aquatic mob balanced around a well-equipped player. For an example, it could spit lots of poisonous--yet very slow moving--projectiles which can block arrows if they hit eachother (destroying the projectile and dropping the arrow as an item). Combined with the limited movement space in the underwater area, this would make fighting them very interesting as you would either have to snipe them through gaps in the projectiles or navigate around them and kill them with a sword before the area becomes too crowded. This would also make them "annoying" as Jeb intends as they are only really a threat if you hang around them or get cornered by them. Only problem is, armor wouldn't play much of a role here (since Jeb is balancing it around a diamond clad player apparently) since poison ignores armor. So maybe it isn't poisonous. Whatever.
Judging from Mojang's recent track record of "cool and interesting things Jeb could do with a feature compared to what he actually implements", though, it seems like we're far more likely to get what is essentially a stronger skeleton that lives in underwater temples. Which would be a darn shame, along with many others.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

You are being so pessimistic (and a bit hypocritical). XD
Reason why: You've been wanting more activity in the ocean, and you complain about this? What happens if it actually swims?
Key fact, YOU hate this mob. YOU don't want it in the game. Most of us do. I never wanted horses, but they're nice for decoration. And anyway, you've been asking for new mobs and now you get a hd fully rendered floating notch head surrounded by awesome underwater beholders you complain? What's up with you people?
Sorry, but can't I express my own opinion? I get to express MY own feedback, and I only said that I wouldn't like it, it doesn't have to change your opinion. Isn't that what the forum for? I never asked for a hostile mob that lives in the water.
And especially this makes me worried: On hard difficulty a full diamond armor is recommended."
"... as well as a Potion of Water Breathing, obviously. Having a helm with the Respiration enchantment helps you see underwater, too."
I really don't want an underwater skeleton that destroys my boat or won't let me swim across a river. Unless it can only attack you when you are 5 blocks underwater, maybe that would be okay.

What if it won't be an underwater skeleton??? What happens if it's actually some sort of a sea monster???
Has it been specified if they will spawn naturally, from spawners/inside the dungeon or if there is there only one? Having a ton of these in one area would be really annoying with the limited mobility and projectiles, and if they are anything like squid they will spawn in the smallest of ponds.
I'm sure we'll find a way to take them out without taking any damage in the first few hours regardless.
Well, they can let that mob only spawn in (deep) oceans of course. And if they really are going to be tough, badass mobs that kills every squid and player in sight and spawn naturally, they are then making the oceans more dangerous. Sailing an ocean can then become a real risk, something you have to think about twice. I don't see a problem with that; it can give a little bit more depth to the oceans and to traveling in general.
And if the ocean has a lot of those mobs swimming around, and you are actually a little bit too weak to face them, the ocean then suddenly becomes huge again...
The fact that it uses ranged attacks suggests that it is most likely a made-up mob, not relative to anything real life.
And the underwater dungeon and new items? My guess is they'll be like shipwrecks. But the items I have no clue.

They, and the dungeons, will likely only generate in ocean biomes and the mob will probably require darkness to spawn as well.
If this mob can attack while you are on surface water, it probably would be harder than land skeletons because they can spawn during the day, and you can't really swim that fast in the water. I'll just wish for the best.
So far every hostile mob is a fantasy mob in Minecraft and every passive mob a natural one. So I guess that Mojang will not really leave that pattern with this mob, but we will never now.

I've been thinking aout that. What if the "underwater dungeon" will turn out to be what all the other dungeons are? Namely a square room/cave of some sort, a spawner, some loot... and that's it. Some people that already imagine larger, temple or even stronghold/fortress-like structures might get disappointed.
Looks bigger than a regular dungeon. Heck, it kinda looks like a tiny labyrinth!

Assuming the picture actually shows the planned dungeon, yes. I've not seen confirmation from Jeb yet that it does. I know he answered "yes" to the general question of "will there be dungeons?", but not that the build we see in the screenshot he posted is it. If you have a link to such a statement, please feel free to post it. I'm as curious as everybody else.
Judging from this picture, this looks like it has multiple rooms!
I know that too. Without him saying it does indeed show the new dungeon, it's nothing more than an assumption though.
Maybe he will say it or not. Even so, there's a high chance that it will be, because the Mojangsters don't do stuff for fun (well, bunnies were made for fun, but they're actually coming soon).
I wonder if it would be worse if they were crawly-bottom-ocean things or swimmy-rise-from-the-depths things.
On one hand, you could just be walking along on the bottom of the ocean and catch a glimpse of something scuttling out of the corner of your eye.. on the other, you could be swimming on the surface when suddenly something surges upward from below.
I'm just going to have to pave over all oceans. IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO BE SURE.

I was thinking the same thing to moment I saw the image. Likely not, but maybe with some similarities (and would explain the ranged attack).
That looks crazy for a water mob idea!
(Although Beholders are kinda bad-****)

Spiders and silverfish...
I hope that they are deep sea!
