I will instead of a sword (for the most part). I tried earlier outside the structure itself, but you move too slowly underwater to get a shot in without taking a hit from the laser.
Move too slowly underwater?
I hope you gain the Depth Strider enchantment to help you move a bit quicker soon!
Just managed to kill one of the Elders on Hard with iron armor (unenchanted except for the helmet which had Respiration I/Fire Prot. I/Unbreaking II; I gathered a bunch of stuff on Creative to prepare and I figured that Respiration would make it less of an annoyance) and then went in in Survival for the sake of saving time), an iron sword, and a bow with 128 arrows. You're going to want a LOT of arrows as I only ended up killing five Guardians yet I was down to 75 arrows when I killed the Elder. I also brought tools, 2 stacks of signs, and a stack of doors.
My strategy was to bypass the annoying entrance with nigh-unavoidable damage by building a tunnel to it (dodging is possible in the temple itself but for cover on the outside you need to make your own cover or pelt everything with snowballs and barricade the entrance once you make it inside). On the inside I just ended up placing doors when I was faced with a large amount of guardians, shooting at them with the bow, and occasionally popping out to swipe them with my sword. After a while I found an Elder and killed it, simple as that.
Turns out what I said before about the unavoidable damage from hitting a Guardian is wrong. It is NOT unavoidable; you see those orange things on them? Turns out those are spikes (they don't look like it at all), and they retract when they move. It's safe to hit them in melee when they aren't extended. You can hit them just fine with a bow when they're extended, though, obviously.
This dungeon is surprisingly good, I'm genuinely impressed with Jeb's work now that I know that you don't *NEED* good gear to survive in it.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Thus far I have not found a weakness to the guardians - this seems a bit odd as all other hostile overworld mobs have weaknesses to them (I guess the only exception being baby zombies but at least fire and drowning affects them).
IMHO these should start suffocating once they are out of water.
Their affinity for water is their downfall - a few well placed sponges traps them in the corners and all you have to do is hide behind the stairs and shoot.
All you need is water one block deep and a bit of current to trap them in a corner.
Pretty easy and safe.
Only if we could get songes before going to the monument...

Easy - find the room with the sponge first - there is always a room with about 10-15 of them.
Find these then enter the temple sucking up water as you go.
You know the Elders are always in the same place - dig a hole in the roof and suck the water out - makes killing them much easier because as long as there is one block of water in the bottom of the room the guardians will not jump out of the water - they will get stuck if you create currents.
The one i found didn't have sponges. You'reright about the Elders though so - good idea!
I'm sort of glad my speculation didn't turn out to be true, because the way those new dungeons are designed seem fitting for a mob such as that to inhabit them. I'm really excited to play the new version in its entirety, and I haven't been this excited for an update since 1.6's horses. Keep up the good work, Mojang!
to be honest after seeing the new under water mob i was not prepared for something that lame. like what is that think a puffer fish with one eye? lame i wanted something cool not that... but those water temples or dungeons i really like pretty cool to explore and epic but lame mini-boss/ mobs in it

i think we should all use common sense and logic when we answer and ask a question but always stay open minded
just cause science fails to explain something does not mean its real (afterlife, big foot, ghosts etc..) does not mean its fake try to stay opened mined instead of closed
Wait so elders DON'T respawn?! I can understand a big ones, but the small ones should spawnfreely near ruins.
Just make them drop shards only. I really hope the big elderswill drop something better than sponges.
Elder Guardians are "the big ones"; the small ones are just "Guardians", do respawn, and don't drop sponges.
its pc as of now but it will be in the consoles (ps3 360 ps4 what ever) in later time a year to two years from now maybe more

I doubt it will ever be on consoles, I heard they're trying to get the console to feel like a different, unique, version of Minecraft.
If they don't, what's the point of buying it on console when you get all and more on pc
i know that feeling right now my xbox and ps3 versions are the same as 1.3 (with a few features from 1.4) but ya i hope they change it up because right now its just an out dated version of pc

Nice point. I agree.
They're piscine, so why not?
