You all know zombies can hold items now. Zombies pick up doors after destroying them [most of the time].
I can't seem to figure out how to make them hold items though, it seems kind of random and rare. Once, while fighting a zombie in survival, I accidentally hit a flower and he picked it up before dying.
I was playing survival fighting a skeleton with a stone sword and died, and when i respawned and went over to my items he was holding my stone sword and fighting me with it.. So that could be how.. I don't know, I haven't really seen it a lot.
It's a random chance. I believe on Hard, zombies pick up items 20% of the time, so crank up the difficulty and start chucking swords. Or arrows. Or diamonds. Anything, really, so long as it isn't an arrow shot from a bow as that won't help much.

Zombies have a CHANCE to spawn with the ability to pick up items. If they spawn with that ability, they'll pick up any drop item on the ground if it's better than what they already have equipped(If they're holding nothing, they'll pick up anything.)
The attribute that causes this is called "CanPickUpLoot", which needs to be applied to a mob in order for them to pick an item up. The chance they'll spawn with that attribute is based off difficulty. On hard mode, each Zombie has a 20% chance to spawn with that ability. On easy, it's 1%. Normal is 7%.
On hard mode, Skeletons ALWAYS spawn with the ability to pick up items, but they only pick up bows, swords, and armor.
i think that zombie villagers do have a higher rate of spawn with that ability.
and i also made a post like this for help on my adventure map im making. BUT nobody told me that............that sucks.......

While alive, you have a 100% chance of dying, so don't sweat it.
