From what I'm seeing here Realms is just a small hosting service from Mojang themselves for vanilla Minecraft. Not FTB etc, not Bukkit, just plain old grief-happy vanilla MC for 4-6 people. I dunno. I'd rather take a risk and stick to 3rd party hosts and be able to install anything I want, really...
I have the technical ressources and knowledge to do this by myself (and Im doing). But anyway I like the idea for people that doesnt have a 24/7 running Server/PC at home or doesnt know what a port-forwarding is.
And for a very small Server for a few friends there is no need of complicated server plugin support or multiworlds. Just a 24/7 running pure vanilla server plus a whitelist is all you need to have fun with your friends.

Yet for 3+ dollars you can get the exact same thing plus some.
I think I like this.
I've always wanted to have people play with me on some of my worlds, but my poor computer really has a lot to handle, and minecraft is pretty darn laggy. But without mod support, I wouldn't want it.
Also... Something that I've been wondering about with mods. (Kinda unrelated) can you put mods on a server as a plugin, and people don't need the mod to play the server? Just curious...
I don't look forward to this.
I can already imagine it: a large big button sitting on my minecraft menu, exept, unlike the texture pack menu that is usful, all it does is give a large popup menu, Microsoft-esque, asking for money that I don't have.
Mojang, please either make it free or add it as a download thing, so us people who would rather not use it don't have to be bothered by it.

This doesn't really answer too many questions after it piqued my interest. "It'll make server setup easier, but you have to pay" isn't really a good selling point when you have mod support and the like to think about.
Considering a one-time payment is one of the main reasons I originally bought the game, I've already gotten a more tech savvy friend of mine to help me out with port forwarding, and editing text files and using commands for whitelists to play with friends is easy enough already, I don't really see much use for this outside of those who find the server setup process tiresome/have bad internet and have too much money on their hands. I just hope the process stays optional.

This would of been useful half a year ago, when I was stuck in my dorm using school internet (not allowed to port through a school router/switch.) It's great to know Mojang is working on this and adventure map support. However, support for Forge, Bukkit, and anything else the community has to offer is essential to gain preference over the third party services.

Why pay for something that you can easily do for yourself through a little bit of Port-Forwarding. Most people could easily host a 2-5 player Server for free.
And run it 24/7? So you're investing an extra PC and running it 24/7 including the power and maintenance, and that's "free." K.
I don't really see the point of this... if I want to play a game with my friends, I'll just use my server for free, rather than paying for it, just to play with others (when that's what Minecraft Realms is for).
Also, does this mean that Mojang will also increase the price of Minecraft?
minecraft most likely wont go up in price however most other details no one is sure of. the servers will obviously cost a bit of money though but minecraft will probably stay the same in price and even if it does go up, it'll probably be free for people who already purchased it. like in the previous versions.
Would you need to have a Mojang account to join a server? Another question is does it cost money to get a Mojang account? I have Mcpe and I'm wondering if this will allow people from the country to join our servers.

Feed my dragons please
If the plugin adds content like new blocks etc, no. if it adds custom crafting recipes for existing items and related, sure

It also depends on a person's client (their computer), not just the server.
