Maybe you could have a "display name" and a username. The display name is displayed in-game, and it cannot match any other display name or username. If the display name is banned, the server automatically goes to a minecraft.net script which gives the username for the display name, and puts that in the ban instead, same if a new player was put into bans.txt manually. An OP in-game command can get the username for a display name as well. Whitelists work similarly. You can change your display name once a month, including the month you purchased the game. The display name defaults to the username.
It is the actual the ops/admins i worry about... not all of em are nice people. I was recently reading a popular hacking forum and most of the names used for brute forcing are gathered from servers.
I would rather see a display name coupled with a unique id [098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb]. The Unique Id is given from minecraft login servers and cannot be used in itself for login attempts but would be easily checked by white/blacklists.
People who use the same tag name could be given the choice at login to a server to change it. And people could also register a nick with a server like on IRC... give the server a password to prove that is your nick.
Logging in with nick Ozzymud..
Ozzymud is already in use assigning Guest10234, if the nick belongs to you /msg server Ozzymud <password>.
/msg server Ozzymud 3557et$%464
Verified! Returning your nick.
player.dat is still stored using the unque id, permissions and all that use the unique id.
I totally agree with you. Just think of all the noobs that would be changing their names all the time just for the hell of it! Although I think that for special cases (like people that accidentally put in their real name) should be able to change once.
Maybe just once a month/year a name change? Anymore would cost 10 bucks?
so with teh server ban thing just make it so it bans your ip not your name
Did you read any of the thread? I can change my dynamic IP within seconds by instructing my router to do so. Most DSL users also get a new IP on each connect (which is often). Or, I can use one of the MANY proxies out there to get a new IP address... not effective AT ALL for banning.
i think you should be able to change your name but you should also have a nick name that should be a shortened version of your last name example in chat (chip)chipopotomaus:hi my real mine craft username is chipmunczz but i want it to be chipopootomaus

These are the reasons I don't do multi-player without knowing the server owner... Sorry guy, but 4 posts total, no domain, just a server on a redirected port prolly running on your local machine... I'll pass
I agree. You should be able to freely change your name once, then it has to be approved for the following: Not taken, no bad content, nothing with making fun of others. Like the following, sethbling wouldn't be a good name because it is taken. Mr.TurdHead would be a bad name because of bad content. Or IlkiyaniSucks would be a bad name because it is making fun of others.
Like before players should be able to change their name FREELY once. Other than that they might have to pay $2-5 to change to an APPROVED name.

I think you should have to pay at least $3 to get a new username, because if it was free, people would constantly be changing it, and the Mojang team would have to make sure that people aren't picking already chosen names. So for that reason I think name changing should only be allowed once or twice.
