IP bans are extremely easy to bypass ie. proxys. The only form of ban that is final is a hardware ban. But even then hardware ids can be spoofed although i doubt very few minecrafters are actually smart enough to fake that or if they are would go to the trouble.
Precisely, and a lot of households also have dynamic IPs. Which would make an IP ban useless.
I think this might be a good idea, but considering the fact that if a server owner bans your username, you can just change it to another one and go back into the server. But, the server owner should also be allowed to ban your IP. Many people might change their names drastically, and your friends won't know who you are until you tell them, whether it's in-game, or out of game. It will be a hassle, for you or a server owner, because you could have your old username down in your Minecraft server PROPERTIES file, and you will forget to change the username.
I thought that was going to be the username to the site! not the game.
I was confused a bit, too, in the process of buying the game. When I migrated my Minecraft account to my Mojang account, I had to start signing in with my e-mail, and at first I thought that my e-mail was going to show up instead of my username. I know how you feel.
For changing names to bypass bans, adopt the system that Cryptic uses. You have the internal account name that nobody sees and the name that everyone sees.
Let's say I choose the display name Name1 and my account is kwintersbite. In game, people would see Name1 over my head and in the chat. Now, if I started causing trouble on a server, an admin could ban my Name1 and hope I get the message. But then I'm like "BAN ME WILL YOU!? >:o", flip into rage mode and devote hours of my life to messing with someone on the internet. I change my name to Name2, but my account will forever be 'kwintersite'. So I join on Name2, say some rude things about the admin's mother, and he decides to ban the @kwintersbite part. No matter which name I changed to, my account tag is now banned. Not even switching to a new IP would I be able to get through.
It may be complex to set up, but it's the proper way to do things if you want the user to have a dynamic ability to change their names at will while retaining a proper method for blocking and banning griefers for the owners and managers of servers.
A system that utilizes a changeable screen name and a static user ID would be good.
As said above, having the ability to change screen name but you can't change the user ID. And when someone gets banned, the ID gets banned not the screen name, in case someone changes to that first person's name later on.
I hope this becomes reality! It could be one of the most useful things on minecraft.net !

I really hope this happens
I picked my name when I was the biggest BMTH fan boy back in 2010 and now I totally regret it. I believe there should be a unique ID so server admins don't have a problem with banning people and I think it should be limited to how many times you can change your name. Just my opinion
Change name max once a month
/ban playername takes the ID from mojang servers and bans the ID.
Anything else?
It would suck if it costed real money like some people are suggesting.
Exactly!
I would be more then happy if they worked it like this It wouldn't bother me much if it did cost money to change your name but as long as it wasn't a ridiculous price, $2-$4 is a reasonable price.
I think having the first 3 name changes should be free, and then something like $2 next time we want to change. And having a max of 1 name change a month.
Great Idea! But would greifers change their name and be allowed back on a server they would be banned from? Maybe expand this a little more to that catogory.
Every member would get a unique ID number that can never change. When someone gets banned, their ID gets banned not their name. So whatever name they have, they will always be banned from that server.
I can see how this could be MAJORLY abused in servers, though. I don't think being able to change your username is a wise idea for the sake of all of the server owners out there.
What if you ban someone, and then he comes back under a different name? Exactly!

So names will interfere with bans 'eh?
On Steam, there's 2 account names. The first name is for your account while the second is the one displayed. Servers ban the account, not the name, so why not do that?
