Each existing account, and each new one that s signed up henceforth, should be given a user ID, just a set of numbers that are completely static, and never change. These will not be visible to anyone except Mojang, server owners and yourself. That way, if a server owner or Mojang wants to ban you, they ban your user ID. That way people can just change usernames based on the one currently assigned to their user ID. Make sense?
I think I'm due for a name change. It was fun with screwing with people for a while with my masculine name, but I think that I'd like something more neutral and personal. Hopefully we'll get this feature in the near future.
I go by a different handle nowadays, it takes less then 30 seconds to change on steam, it takes a couple of hours to update on Origin, the forums I'm one mostly you have to talk to an admin to change your username, i think Minecraft should switch to Seam authentication as it would reduce load on Minecraft.net in both logins and updates, I'm not sure how easy it is to do steam authentication on Java http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/publishingservices.php
I'm sorry, but I despise this idea of changing names. Sure, I regret my name, and more so down the track because I chose it from what bullies used to call me, but honestly let's look at the pros and cons of this.
Pros:
1. You can have a cool new username.
Cons:
1. Server Owners can't ban you if you change your name.
2. It is morally confusing for people to distinguish you.
3. It's going to cause many problems down the track, whether system overloads at Mojang, or debates of innapropriateness.
This is why I don't condone this new idea Jeb brought to mind, it's just plain horrible and will lead to a new level of griefing.
Since 1.7.1, I've had the n00by name: skill64.
Finally I can make my name sound much more MLG Pro!
No numbers, no lower case letters at the start.
SuperiorSlime will be my new name!

Well, this might cause lot of problems!
Bans, got banned change your name....
My suggestion is, everyone has unique id, from this id you get banned/OPed etc... Username can be changed any time.
How about, you get two seperate usernames: Minecraft.net and Minecraft usernames.
You, when banned, are banned by your Minecraft.net account, so this would work well.

Every one keeps their username, which, if banned, stays banned.
But you can change your in-game name, which would be separate from your Minecraft username.
I apologize if someone had this idea already. I dont have time to read 30 pages of replies. XD

or we just use steam which would allow
steam logins (saves load on minecraft.net)
steam workshop (once api is in of course)
steam server list
steam friends
steamID (this is what the servers would ban
steam DRM (cut down on the number of cracked copies)
I personally enjoy the fact that me might be able to change our usernames. But I wounder what happens if a Owner bans someone on a server but did not ban there ip. They change there name and there in. What will the Owner do if he find out try to re-ban him. But he might be able to change his username yet again. I love the idea of changing our names don't get me wrong there. But we also like playing on servers.
