That aside, I don't really think you should be able to change your username. You should have taken the time to think about what you wanted and/or make alternates should a name get taken.
Uh, I don't know about you, but I signed up for MC because my friend said, hey this is a fun game, you should try it! I didn't know my signup would be my in-game name. Hell, I didn't even know there was multiplayer at the time. And I certainly didn't think it was something I'd still be playing a year later.
I used my real name, and because of that I'm hesitant to play online with anyone except people I know IRL. The opportunity to change my name means I can actually join servers and meet new people without fear of being stalked or something. This is good thing - this game is played by more people than just 13 year old griefers.
And because some people seemed to have not heard it the first 8 times, you can ban the IP address. Changing your name is not a free pass to get back on a server if you ban them right.
For all you who are against the name changing: STOP COMPLAINING!
Jeb and Mollstam are a lot smarter than you and can think up ways to make it all work out.
And when you ban someone it bans the IP adress not the username.
Stop thinking you're smarter than jeb and the Mojang Team.
I think it should be, you can only change your name to an account that isn't already premium, to avoid stealing your friends name or CaptainSparkelz(Or however you spell it), etc.
It should have either a one month cooldown, or once in a game time chance to change the name.
I also agree with the id, a random id should be automatically assigned to each email.
Then, when banning a username off a server, it bans the id as well, kind of like an ip ban, which is an option, but the player's bro can still play, etc.
But I think with these conditions, the name change should be added, I think with proper precautions it can be added. But it should definitely be free.
EDIT: Also, when changing name(once per month) perhaps your previous names can be saved to your id, and be never usable again, to also solve name stealers.

When I heard about the new skin for good ol' MC Wiki, I was afraid it meant an overhaul similar to Wikia's unfortunate Oasis update some years ago. I'm happy to see they kept the Monobook format and hope that it stays that way. The new skin looks very nice.

Which would be great...but there are people who can just get a new IP. Go to the next computer. Simple as that. Plus, someone mentioned earlier that your IP can change, which I don't know how that works. If you can explain it to me, I would be grateful.
I'm sorry, but I despise this idea of changing names. Sure, I regret my name, and more so down the track because I chose it from what bullies used to call me, but honestly let's look at the pros and cons of this.
Pros:
1. You can have a cool new username.
Cons:
1. Server Owners can't ban you if you change your name.
2. It is morally confusing for people to distinguish you.
3. It's going to cause many problems down the track, whether system overloads at Mojang, or debates of innapropriateness.
This is why I don't condone this new idea Jeb brought to mind, it's just plain horrible and will lead to a new level of griefing.
This is why server owners can ban by IP instead of by name. It's what I do...

One guy's naturally changes daily, my old computer company hoster thing (like Verzion, Time Warner etc.) whenever I restarted the computer it would change. Plus there are hack clients with "Proxies" that allow your IP to show up differently or something similar to that. But what I personally think is your Minecraft ID if we get one should be your FIRST username, this allows no name stealing AND you can figure out who's who.
I've played games where the username you picked was the one you were known as in game and in the forums attached to the game. The creators implemented this change and it was mass chaos. Here's my two cents:
Allow players to change their name once they are in game so that they are seen as whatever they like BUT do not allow them to change their Minecraft.net name. How would this work?
If I wanted to log into Minecraft.net and Minecraft I would have to use my name, Ironclad Pen. Once I'm actually in minecraft, I could open up chat type in /change name Ironclad Pen (new name here). After that happened my name wound appear as whatever I chose to the other players and would be the name used in commands. Once I log out of Minecraft, my name would be reset to Ironclad Pen.
Obviously there would have to be some sort of check that Minecraft runs in order to prevent two players from having the same name.
EDIT:
I also think it would be interesting if Minecraft.com would implement a profile system that others could view. With that in place, Mojang could then assign each user a unique code that links their profile/Minecraft.net name to their character. That way if someone comes into your server and is messing stuff up you simply* 'ping' their code, go to Minecraft.com, get their account name and add their account name to your ban list.

but what if you ahve a base name that's whitelisted, ect...and a second name in chat? A server admin would somehow be able to find your bannable name, and it would work then....right?
If this was really true about changing names for minecraft, well, at least there would be a change of e-mail address, because I can't receive e-mails from you guys and will not stand if you don't.

The Minecraft wiki looks like they just ripped the layout from the forums and did some minor changes to fit the wiki layout... Don't seem like a lot of hard work, specially for someone who knows what they are doing...
And because some people seemed to have not heard it the first 8 times, you can ban the IP address. Changing your name is not a free pass to get back on a server if you ban them right.
Changing an IP address is easy. A username is a permanent ban, with no way around unless someone comes on with a new account.

I was thinking the exact same thing. They're almost identical.
