Well, I created my account last wednesday, and because I knew the name was permanent until name changing will be supported, I tried a lot of usernames to be sure I chose the best. The problem is, when I wanted to clear the "fill in username" space, I pressed delete, but halfway deleting my username I accidentally hit the enter key with my arm, leaving me with some unrecognisable name. Now I have paid 20 euros for minecraft, and I don't even play it because I don't like playing it this way, because my name is so important to me (yes, it may be weird not to play minecraft for such a reason, but for some reason it's really not fun for me like this) For this reason I would like name change support.
Besides name changing, another important thing to do is, make the registering so, that after you fill in your username and press enter, there should be like a warning/confirmation, telling you the name is your ingame name and is permanent (until mojang decides otherwise) and asks you if the username is correct, that way a lot of problems will be prevented.
Then another problem is, that one of the names I was considering was "rik209" wich is the name of this free account I already had, which brings up the question: If name changing would be possible, would it also be possible to change your name into the name of a free account you own?
Too bad it's too late for me, and I will be stuck with my unrecognisable name for some time, because I was trying to be careful with the name I chose, but I hope these suggestions will be thought about by others, and maybe eventually implemented to prevent name trouble for others...
This idea will work if they improvise with the banning system my idea is to keep the minecraft.net username but change the ign and ban the minecraft.net username associated with the ign only for that server
I'm sorry, but I despise this idea of changing names. Sure, I regret my name, and more so down the track because I chose it from what bullies used to call me, but honestly let's look at the pros and cons of this.
Pros:
1. You can have a cool new username.
Cons:
1. Server Owners can't ban you if you change your name.
2. It is morally confusing for people to distinguish you.
3. It's going to cause many problems down the track, whether system overloads at Mojang, or debates of innapropriateness.
This is why I don't condone this new idea Jeb brought to mind, it's just plain horrible and will lead to a new level of griefing.
At first glance it sounds bad, but once you give it some thought it seems to make sense.
First, you couldn't just change your name to get unbanned if they ban you from a unique ID that is unchangeable, however an IP ban would be bad for people with families because then the whole family would get banned which may cause problems.
Then take into consideration how they're going to do it. I see four ways they could do this.
1: They go XBL style and make it cost each time you change it
2: They go the runescape way and have a cooldown period around say a month.
3: They go full retard and make it changable at any time, as many times as people want.
4: They go facebook style and make it where you only have a limited amount of name changes
Personally i think the Runescape idea is good, exept maybe make it cost after the first two changes. This way guys who made a bad choice by putting a ty name (mine is the bland name of robertworsham) can have the opportunity to change it to something more interesting, but the constant name changers can't just switch from SirMLGpro to lenewb, etc. etc.
I think it's a great idea, and setting the multiplayer to remember unique ID's wouldn't be hard, and personally i wan't to be able to make my name SirMischeviousMuffins c;
I personally think this is a great idea, but i do see the problem with everyone changing their name all the time. From what I know DeviantArt allows its users to change their names only once a year, which I think would be good for minecraft.
I think this is a great idea because I have a friend who won't even tell me his username because it is so stupid.
But of course there is the fact that someone well known might change there username and someone else might take it.
I think the ability to change your username would be a great idea. Although maybe have a cooldown type effect where you can only change your username once every 3-5 months. I am sure others could very well benefit from a feature like this added. And I have been debating to change my current name to maybe something else.

if they choose to change their user name they are choosing to lose the old username
its a good sytem
Well, this might cause lot of problems!
Bans, got banned change your name....
My suggestion is, everyone has unique id, from this id you get banned/OPed etc... Username can be changed any time.
I hope this gets implemented someday. My username is very generic and a lot of people think it's a girl's name. Also, there are security issues when playing online. Your username and your avatar's name should be different.
Regarding griefers name changing in order to escape the ban stick, that's easily fixable by allowing server operators to ban the username instead of the avatar's name. There are probably even tools out there that allow server admins to ban IP addresses, so I don't see this as a large issue.

Makes perfect sense. I would very much like to change my name though, it never really suited me and I just chose it because I like wolves. lol
As for the wiki changes, it looks about the same. Just widescreened I think.

I agree, it should be paid to change names otherwise people will change their name every two seconds.
But of course there is the fact that someone well known might change there username and someone else might take it.

Well my friend, YOU HAVE AN AMAZING MIND!!!!!
