Well, this might cause lot of problems!
Bans, got banned change your name....
My suggestion is, everyone has unique id, from this id you get banned/OPed etc... Username can be changed any time.
I agree with this guy. Have the username / unique ID system similar to Steam's. Also, we should pay nothing and there should be something to balance it out... Maybe like EA / Origin how its a week cooldown?

Nahh. People will be changing their IGNs left and right and it will be silly without a price. I suggest they charge $5 for each IGN switch.
It should just be done how steam does it - have a unique ID, and your account name is seperate to your ingame name. And maybe have a list of previous aliases.
The reason I don't like that idea is since it doesn't allow you to be creative. If someone makes a creative IGN, 1000s more will, and the original maker of the IGN will get no credit. Everyone will be running around with the IGN "Diamond/Notch/Mojang, etc."
I agree with getting a player ID, so bans aren't avoidable and having to pay a small fee after the first name change (ex: second name change has a fee of 5 USD or such.) I personally am happy with my name but would be happy to change it for free lol
I absolutely love the idea of a name change; However, I can see how it would be abused. If someone who griefed a server and was just kicked out instead of being banned and having their IP banned, decided they were going to change their name than come back onto the server and repeat over and over. That's about the only way I could see it being abused, than again it's also the server's fault because they didn't correctly get rid of the person.
A limit to how many times you can change would be good. Like, you can only change it five times, so griefers can't just change their names whenever they like. If you want to change your name because you don't like your name, then you must have an idea in mind, so you can just change it and be done. Abuse would still run amuck though... Mebbe only 3 changes?

I have a crappy username. I was taking french class at the time and for some reason was compelled to use conjugations of the words you, of, and the. Tout Da La. I've standardized my usernames since then to UnicodeJoe. I think we should do a sort of steam thing where you can see what somebody has played as before. You could middle click on somebody and have it bring up a sort of profile that could show how long the person has been playing, perhaps favorite servers, and what names they have used in the past.
Maybe you can only do it once an update or something with a cooldown. That way, people will have to think long and hard about it. Otherwise, there would be no stopping of noobs changing their names daily. There has to be some limits.
While I can see how it would be helpful to change your minecraft account name, but I think they would have to make a lot of precautions that come with such a system.
I say that there should be a 30 day wait after changing a username to use it again. Why? So trolls won't rampage on servers with different names all the time.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.

IP ban is banning to computer from that server. you can go back onto that server on a different PC. However, if we all had a unique ID, like an account creation number or a specific username, it would be easier to ban peoplez.

We paid for the game, maybe the first change of username is free, a message comes up saying that the next one is charged? At least thats fair.

OR... just make it a fee such as $5.
I think it should be like steam though.
The days of youth...
The nick plugin is useless. Essentials does it a lot better. I hate the idea that you can change your Minecraft name.
However, you definitely have to have a unique ID for banning purposes.
