Yes, Maybe each player could get a code to change their name... however many people would sell their codes online, and we know that Mojang wouldn't want that...
well lets hope mojang could add a uniqe code or our giftcode as an id so when you bane someone by their oldname whenever they change their name they would still be ban cause dammn i hate my username cause i did not know it was gonna be my username so i just typed trollboy9999 which sucks
This can lead to bad things, cause people can disguise as famous youtubers, bypass bans, and login as different accounts. They should think about this. Is there more pros, or cons? If more pros, attempt to eliminate the cons, if severe. If to much cons, like this situation, think of something unique to stop people from bypassing bans. Make it limited. If you don't, people WILL abuse this power, using it to bypass bans or pretend to be famous people that they are not, you should make it so that when you select a username, you have two. One permanent one that remains hidden and you can be found with, and another that covers up the permanent one. Make it so that you can only change your name ONCE, so that your old name (ex. Humphery) is covered by a new name (ex. Bowling219), so that when you talk, it shows your new name rather than your old one. And when they issue commands using your old name, they execute on you. You should also add a command with vanilla like /whoid or something, so it shows their old name, and you can find them like that. You should also include a warning when you first register (ex. This will be your permanent Minecraft username, be unique and choose wisely, you can't change it.) I hope this can help everybody know how dangerous this move can be. We may regret it, unless they do something unique to limit the ways of abuse.
You bring up a valid point, but also a rather poor one in ways. You see no two people will be able to share the same username, therefore you can't honestly impersonate a famous Minecrafter any more then before now can you!
As for the ban issue I would say there could maybe be a unique user token that would be blocked when you executed the /ban command. This way it wouldn't matter what IP or Username they have!
The problem I see about username changing is the server I am on uses my minecraft username to list my scores ands stuff. If the name changes, the information might be gone.
I think the player ID system would work fine, if anyone changes their name as a famous youtuber, you could run a command, like /id <player> or something, and it could show their id and their previous usernames. I would change mine. To like Yosheh or something.
Personally, I like my name. However, I do completely understand all the pros and cons, and my opinion is it should be available. According to mojang, a change in username will not lift any bans on the user. I have read all that I could about this topic at the official minecraft site, from my understanding, our profile does not change anything but our username, all bans will remain in place. Also, all scores and achievements will not be affected either. Perhaps that's why this feature is taking so long? So, no worries just because this option becomes available, doesn't mean all the trolls you banned previously can suddenly reappear:) As far as the constant name changers, simple change once for free, small fee any more times beyond that?
I like the idea of a username change, but I'm afraid the execution. Every concept has a glitchy beta stage, and with a community like Minecraft that can seamlessly edit game code, the genesis of username changes invites all the more hacking.

As for the skin change, I'm new so ... *awkward shrug*
I hope this happened because I want to change my username because to be honest terminator9756 was the first thing I thought of. I want to change it to either Unusual_Suspect or SoccerPROMC
this would be horrible people would be like omg thats so coool imma go do it now they change it and realize that whenever you change your username you lose everything you have ever had to do with any server for example you would be a new player on a server with a new username and you would lose you permissions becouse all permissions managers save your permissions to your username, so if anyone changed to your old username they could get all of your permissions, not to mention you could unban youself from all servers at once (unless your ip banned). so in conclusion this is a terrible i dea and is likely to never happen.

Thats what it says in the 1.7.2 Changelog under the MP section.
Feel free to PM me if you have any death wishes.
The ability to change your name should be on your minecraft account page for a small price (1.00 or so)
