There is only ONE major problem about this idea. If we donate to a server, and for example my username is Cam_2002, then the admins will set the username "Cam_2002" as a donor. Then you change your username, and it is not in the config file of the server. Also, the inverted of that. Someone may be a donor, then change their username, and then someone takes their old username, and bam. They are a donor without paying. So this should not be a feature. I can see how it would help, but I do not recommend it.
Honestly, if it is going to cost money, I don't think a griefer is so inclined to griefing the same servers that he will pay money to be unbanned. Besides, alot of people have come up with ideas that can solve this problem anyway. Mojang can do the same aswell.
I remember when I first purchased Minecraft, I thought we could create a character with a name after we logged in, kind of like a RPG. Needless to say, I discovered that wasn't the case and bought a second copy :P.
Yea, hopefully the spammers stop spamming soon about their username
I think maybe you should pay a small price for this feature. Like 2 dollars or something.
Really dude? Pay money? Well, I bought Minecraft with a card. I can't use a credit card, and 99% of the people wouldn't! That would make me think Mojang was a money sucking company that cares nothing about peoples thoughts. You already have to buy there skins! Also, if you changed your name you could be Notch, or Honeydew, or BlueXephos! Lame idea....
I don't know why so many people are going on about people taking popular names, or being able to sidestep server bans by changing your name. Fixing all of that seems pretty simple to me, all you would need to do is to have both a permanent account name, and a unique display name.
When switching over to the new system all current usernames would be reserved as both that persons account name, and their display name. This way you wouldn't have to be concerned about some kids impersonating youtube celebrities, since current usernames would automatically be transfered over to unique display names.
This would also keep people from getting around bans by changing their name, since the server would still know what your account name is, and refuse you entry if the administrator doesn't want you there.
For example:
Upon conversion both my account name and display name would both be "Blu_Haze".
All servers I connect to would see me by that name, and all users in game would see that name as well.
I then change my display name to "BillyBob".
All servers I connect to would still see me as "Blu_Haze", but all users in game would now see me as "BillyBob".
My medication begins to wear off and I start randomly cussing out everyone I meet in game.
The server administrators don't care for this much, so they decide to ban me.
My account name "Blu_Haze" is added to the servers banned-players list, and I'm ejected from the game.
At this point it doesn't matter if I change my display name a dozen times after I'm banned, because the server still will not allow anyone with the account name of "Blu_Haze" onto that server.
This way everyone gets to change the name that other players see as much as they like, but display names are still unique so you don't have to worry about impersonations, and account names are permanent so servers can still ban people without any additional effort than before.
Yeah kind of like xbox you can change your name once and then you have to pay for it.
"And so I go fast. Not because I want to, because no one else will."
