Really, Minecraft SHOULD not become a clone of steam, get real
Not a clone of Steam, like changing your name anytime, but maybe like you have to go directly to the Minecraft website, and you can only change once a month or something, and you couldn't change it to something already in use.
I think that this is a very good idea. I'm the type of person who, after a certain amount of time, will want to change how things are working. Username, IGN, skin, etc. For all of you that say no because of the banning whatnot, it would be possible to still ban them by using their player.dat file. For those who dont know, player.dat files contain all knowledge of where you are in a minecraft world, at what time, and what you've done. If its not possible to use player.dat, then I think the second best option is for people to be able to see your login username. Plugins or oping would be able to control the use of this feature

actually, it could be just as easy (or as hard, for some) as changing your skin. Steam has a good system, why not copy it?
Every one of us picked our Minecraft user name when we signed up on minecraft.net for the first time (and every time thereafter). For most of us, knowing that whatever name was chosen is stuck with us forever is just a part of the game. Still, what if you gave yourself a silly or inappropriate name? What if you're just tired of the one you have? Currently, this means getting another copy of the game - but maybe not for long.
Jeb hinted that username changes might be a feature in the near future, something that Mollstam is looking into currently. While there is no set date - or even a hinted one - for the feature's arrival, it would seem that it's more a matter of "when" than "if" now.
Maybe I can use this opportunity to change my name to "MrFluffykins".
For years, the Minecraft Wiki has followed the same visual format as many wikis - it's a tried and true look, after all. For one user - namely, Ultradude25, an administrator on the wiki - this just wasn't good enough. Leading the effort to revamp the wiki's appearance, the community has given Minecraft's most popular wiki a complete make-over - head on over and check it out!
Minecraft Wiki will seem quite familiar to forum regulars - keep in mind however, that the visual re-design was done entirely by volunteers! It is, in many ways, another reminder of just how strong the Minecraft community is, and how far it reaches. It's hard to think of another gaming community with such strong dedication, passion and sense of unity. Congratulations to Ultradude25, and everyone who helped him out on this incredibly ambitious project!
Well, this might cause lot of problems!
Bans, got banned change your name....
My suggestion is, everyone has unique id, from this id you get banned/OPed etc... Username can be changed any time.
yea i agree with you. Also, the people you've known from servers will forget you so i don't think changing names are such a good idea.
I actually don't see how this would be problematic with bans and such on servers. It really wouldn't be a problem.
The name you have now would become your "base" name and stay at that, you wouldn't be able to change it, while the name you can freely change is your display name, which shows up to you and other players, and can be used with /tp, /give commands and such. However, you would be banned, whitelisted and blacklisted from your base name, and ops would have a command, for example, /name Crimsollite, that would reveal your base name.
That's just my idea on how it could work.

I agree with people that say they we should only be allowed to change our usernames a certain amount of times and may I add (not sure if anyone said this or not) another restriction where it is only possible to change you name every 48 hours, or however long. Now that's only if they make the x amount of times more than one.
You clearly don't understand how advanced account security is. It's deeper than a simple username.
I'm sorry, I was bored when i wrote that post, I honestly was not really thinking, I understand how far security is with minecarft accounts, due to the fact that many unpremium loseres who use cracked clients try hacking accounts all the time
They should implement a Friend List already.
Example:
IGN: Player ID No: 01101010 Description: Your best friend in MC... etc etc.
So when the person had a username change it would be...
IGN: Player1 (old IGN: Player) ID No. 01101010 Description: Your best friend in MC... etc etc.
That way you can tell the difference or something like that.
If you really need a username change, contact Mojang and they'll offer you one if you pay like $3.
The point is you're not allowed to have usernames already used. Ex: A famous Minecraft player exchanged their username and another player wants their old one but they can't because it's already used before, to avoid problems like imposters.
The banning system should be the same but when you do /ban Player Hacking the bans would not only prevent the username to log on but also their ID Number. That way people who got banned still can't be able to go to the said server even if they had a username change.

Best. Texture. Pack. EVAH!
