seems like a version specific glitch or might be your graphics
Turns out it's a bug caused by optifog. Also, even though it's supposed to increase fps, it actually decreases it. Yeah, don't use old versions of optifog. (Specifically before 1.2.5)

This may actually be a "bug" with your GPU driver; from what I can tell it implemented occlusion culling using hardware occlusion queries, a way to remove hidden geometry using a function in the GPU driver, which was later implemented in vanilla and called "Advanced OpenGL", but many users reported it actually decreased performance when enabled, mainly those with non-NVIDIA GPUs (Minecraft in general seems to have been coded to best run on NVIDIA, as seen by several other issues it has on other GPUs, probably since that is what Notch had):
In particular, my old computer benefited greatly from having Advanced OpenGL enabled, doubling FPS (it has little effect on my current system, both with NVIDIA GPUs) - without it I'd even have issues on Normal render distance, especially on modded worlds with more caves, due to the GPU running out of dedicated VRAM, causing framerate drops to single digits, but when enabled I had no issues with even 3x deeper worlds. The major drop in performance I saw with 1.8 was at least partly due to the removal of AOGL, even if it did add its own form of occlusion culling, but it uses the CPU instead and is far less effective at culling hidden geometry (the visual bugs mentioned in the second link above, namely, chunks not rendering in, were fixed by Optifine, as well as my own mod (incredibly, the fix is posted to the bug tracker!), which otherwise had little noticeable impact on performance outside of smoother chunk updates - in fact I came to believe that its claim of "doubled FPS" was entirely from the days when it added occlusion culling, before it became part of vanilla).

It was fine on vanilla, I tried on my laptop with an intel graphics card and it was the same.
Snow biome without snow
also me holding block 36
Thanks.
why is this happening btw?
Thanks.
It looks like you actually have a very small snow biome (where the pine trees are) surrounded by regular forest.
Also dang, what version are you running? Hearts, but no hunger, must be pre-1.8 beta.
if you look closely at the edge of the block
you can see snow there
it just isn't rendering the snow top
Thanks.

opti...fog?
Mods are great..., until they're not.
My attitude exactly.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Global warming in minecraft
