So, I've had the idea to try and run a Minecraft world through as many versions as I can. I know that if I start in Release 1.0.0 I can go all the way to future updates with minimal issues. However, how far back can a Single Minecraft world be started and be able to continue to future versions? Like, could I start it in Alpha and go all the way to the present and beyond? I know there would be some issues with terrain gen, but I just want to know if it's possible.
It should be possible but you can't just go from alpha to current release, the world wouldn't even be visible in current release. So, you have to convert the world in the correct order of the different major changes to the world format.
For a straight answer, the oldest version you can load up a world in, and still be able to play it in every version after that is Infdev 20100327.
However, a lot of these .jar files are unavailable within the launcher, however you can use a launcher like Betacraft or go to the Minecraft Wiki to get the files and use it.

This explains it better than I could in text.
Cool, thats what I needed to know. Thanks.
