I think the title is self explanatory... In my opinion its quite stupid giving up mending and having to carry additional arrow and cramping additional inventory slot. The only purpose arrow serves nowadays is being placed infront of tipped arrows to preserve them for better moments.
So what i do think is that it would be nice if the default arrow wouldnt be required to shoot a bow
Considering how easy it is to get arrows even early game I don't think it matters that much, but it does seem strange that a bow blessed with the ability to fire infinite arrows should require you to craft an arrow to use it. It's a magic bow with infinite ammo, why is it requiring you to make ammunition?
I vote no.
Also what's dumb is like with other weapons, you only have a limited number of repairs on an anvil.
The only reason mending and infinity made it so broken before the patch, is because there was zero need to ever use an anvil for repairs with the two together.

You could say the same thing for any other item; the reason why they made Mending and Infinity incompatible is because you could use Punch bows to boost elytra far more cheaply than using fireworks:
If I played in newer versions I'd patch elytra being boosted by Punch arrows (at least if the player fired it, otherwise, why do you gain forward momentum from something that knocks you back?) and allow Mending and Infinity to be used together (as they can in TMCW, just as vanilla 1.6.4 lets you infinitely repair an infinity bow).
This also also a lot like another pointless change; they removed the ability for shears to get Silk Touch in 1.9 to fix an exploit where you could use them indefinitely to collect blocks like grass since they only lost durability when mining the blocks they were effective against. My own solution to this issues was to have them lose durability when breaking any block, same for when I allowed hoes to receive Fortune (years before it was added to vanilla, which still has the "infinite Fortune" exploit on blocks like crops which do not normally cost durability - I also patched this by only allowing hoes to apply Fortune to crops, which also makes tiers above wood/stone worth using).

This is supported by the fact that Mending and Infinity were made mutually exclusive at the same time fireworks were allowed to boost elytra:

I think boosts with the Elytra should only be allowed with fireworks and tridents with Riptide, since fireworks cost you resources and cannot be infinitely spammed. Tridents with riptide would only work in water and when it is raining above ocean level, which is only applicable to the Overworld anyway and the boost therefore becomes situational.
I definitely disagree with Punch bows boosting the Elytra, we have common ground there.

fireworks work in the rain and the riptide helps you fly in the rain and the water which what tridents are used for and when it's not raining you need to use fireworks or get in the water

Tridents are also a very dangerous way to fly, because they take you far above the altitude needed to insta kill you above ground.
They're somewhat unreliable unless you're over an ocean or if you have an elytra or potions of slow falling.
Feather Falling 4 even with full Protection 4 armour stacked can't save you if you fall from height limit to the ground.
Without the elytra or other means to break your fall you're screwed if you fall from 256 Y.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
